In the recent controversy relative to the Cattily
subecription of mock to the Pittsburgh and Sten
beeline Railroad, the Gazette ^laid much strees
upon ad opinion of Sir. MILNOI3. Reiman; U
contained in a report to the Bellefontaine and
Indiana Railroad Company, an extract from
which was pi:Mitoticoln that paper. The Object
of the Gazette, as iderly as we could judge;,siras
to create the impression that.this roil:Larks italiat
extract, would convey to the mind oY the reader
more oorreot idea of the route of the road than
any description founded on actual surveys made
sifterwerda. Mer. R. wax absent from the city
at the time, and had no connection with the con
troversy. Since his return; we have taken octets
elan to sell his attention to the' eironmetanctie
attending the petblication alluded to; and have
derived from Inta, In a few words, what we think
II a correct vied of this paint. which, In justice
to 'that gentleman and to the Pittsburgh and
Steubenville Company, we shall state. .
If the editor of the Gazette will read the whole
report of-me/ Bellefontaine Company, he will
God that the portion from which his extract is
taken 'refers to a then anticipated rivalry be
tween the Ohio and Pennsylvania and the Steu
benville and Indiana Roads, and.the extension
of the latter, then' contemplated, between Sten.
benvillo and Pittsburgh; and in referring to the
proposed route between Steubenville . and Pitts
burgh he epike of the country as being "very
hilly," "five or Mx hundred feet, bigh;" and sug
gested "that the very hilly nate= of Washing
ton and Alleitheninountien joined to the diffi
culty and the expense of creasing the Ohio and
Monongahela tivernliendered that part of the
project rather unprotaLsing;" remarking, farther,
"that a straight line was entirely impracticable,"
and "that the expense 'and amount of ascent and
descent waned probably impel those interested
to seek a more circnitou.s connection with Pitts
burgh, along the right bank of the Ohio river to
Wellsville, and intersecting the Ohio and Penis
.eylvania Railroad at Beaver. 25 miles below
Pittsburgh."
It is obvious from the entire tenor of theSe
remarks that they were not based on any sir
'eye, and that they were notintended to be ec
understood; but that they were mertly,an ex.
pres.sion of the very general impressions which.
then existed, for the consideration and examine.
clans of parties in Ohio looking to connections
with Pittsburgh.
Some time afterwards, this gentleman was
called upon ' as Consulting Engineer of the Pitts .."
burgh and Steubenville Railroad Company, to
make n prates:anoint examination a this very
country.. which , he did in =jou:lotion with Mr.
David Mitchell, Jr., the present worthy' Chief
Engineer, in tt most thorough manner. And what
did he find ? Any contradiction of obit pets
stated in his Ohio report? No. The country
between Pittsburgh and Steubenville is "very
hilly," the ridges are " fir/ or six hundtgil feet
above the river," and the line adopted is by no
means straight, though it is 25 miles shorter
than the river route. Tet, over this country a
route eras traced with =yam= grades the same
as the Pennejlisnit Road, where it leaves- this
city, namely, 62 8.10 feet per mile, and entirely
practicable at a len cost per mile than eastern
roads generally. Bat these 'were not the only
elements which entered into his calculations —1
Ile found that' the line premed through a mag
nificent ogricaltural country, -embracing within
the =me area a very extensive and valuable re
gion abounding in cost of the very beet quality ;
and that the descending grades preponderated to
wards two important pointcon the river-;--Stea
benville and Pittsburgh. The local trade of the
route, combined with its position as the shortest
. connecting. link is the • great chain ' of ease
, nd west Vailroadr, warranted him, as Mr. 1i
thought, and Oil thinks, in presenting that route
froratia to the investigations of et/pita/Ista, as
a !leper field for the investment of railroad
capital. Moro than a year has elapsed elute
"Mr. IL has had any professional connection with
the Pittsburgh and Steubenville road, but his
present opinions in relation to it, and Its pros
' pests, are those to be found in the only reports
he made after having carefully .examined the
country. ,

The *pees of New York is gradually awaken
ing to the importance of that great paplstical ,
encrcatheoent, 'the Church Property bill The
'author of the bill, Archbishop Hughes, was a
Jesuit priest,' if I remember correctly, before be
became a bishop, and no doubt retains a very
high piece In the reverence and affection of the
order. Archbishop Hughes,;as the antnoi of
the bill, defends it upon the ground that, in vest
ing the church rroperty of Romanist. in his
tmb, the bill protium to do for the clergy of
that etet what the law has done for the (flimsy of;
other accts. And It to alleged that the bishops
of the Episcopal and Methodist Asesxmas Prot•
estatt churches hold their church property as
corporations solo. As to the fact asserted I
know aethieg, and It certainly Is not worth
while to enquire. The insinuated analogy dose
not exist. The Episcopal and Methodist sects
have - Oman and appointed their bishops, and
have conferred upon them what authority they
exercise. The clergy eand, the laity of those
seats have appointed their Mishap., and will dis
robe them if they show themselves unworthy of
the trust reposed in theta, whether as respects
the epitittud or the tempered '
party of their se.
entice. And the whole chareS Is American, own.
ing - no allegiance nor resOnothillty to any for

how Is : It with John, archbishop 'of something or
other in New York? Who appointed html For
whom would he hold the temporalities of the
Roman church in New York t To whom would
he be responsible! To whom would he render
an account of-the revenues and expenditures
of this immense property! The answer to
all these qinestions is—the Roman Pontiffs,
the monarch of a certain superannuated, de.
crepit state of Italy, under French protection.—
This John Hughes-is not a elitism of 'the United
States, because he Ise Roman etibject, amenable
litct to the lawn, "usages and discipline" of his
Italian master, and next, if he have any spark
of loyalty:left In him after aCquittanee from the!
service, to hie church in America.
This church property movement is a type of
Papal aggreesion in the United Staten It AS
about fifteen years eince-thit the priests of that
church procured the expulsion of the bible from
the common schools In Nee- York, upon the plea
that King James' translation waalsiscourate, In
due time they-attacked the whole; public school
system, op the g yard that the Bible not ,baing
read, and sectarian tellgioa not taught, the
schools were Oodless--and they claimed a per;
lion of the common ethooli fund for the support
of p9pists schools. This inomment has bt'en
followed in all the States, and has produced, as
It daight to have done, intense excitement In
Pennsylvania, Ohio,„Meryland and Michigan '
For the present, John Hughes and Plus IX. will
undoubtedly be defeated in New York, 'hut if
they meet with any shadow of enema, If thsy
can even retreat with honor, the attempt will be
renewal In all the other States, in which the
wealth of the Seat may afford a motive to, VW
hierarchy for reining and appropriating it to the
uses of their master, the Italian deep; before
named, and themselves. Jnzatts.
