After the lapse or several days the Post has ventured. to speak out on the. case of Judge Woodwerd's action towards foreigners in the Reform Convention. 'To give the eaters the fall benefit of their defined we copy their article entire. , That very truthful and consittent sheet, the Pittsburgh Gazette, has had a great deal to say, within the last few days, in regard to "Judge Woodward'e Nativism." The editor appears to be In a very distressed state of mind on this sub ject, and has worked himself almost Mtn thi fief that itte Poet admits the Muth of all the ridi culous allegations and deliberate falsehoods set forth in the Gazette. If Judge Woodward had the slightest affinity with Nativism, that fact would constitute s strong argument why the Deacon and the little squad of proscriptive poli ticians who believe with him, should support that distinguished jurist and true-hearted Bat issteid of Judge W. being a Native, the lusty ' reverse is the truth, as we Seen have at in our Power to show in a few days. We have . written for some document/ on this subject, which, we • undertake to say, will triumphantly vindicate :Judge Woodward from the malignant assaults and lying abuse of the federal press. In the meantime, unlit they arrive, we would advise the editor of the Gazette to continue. hie oboes of • our candidate for the Supreme Benoit. We yes. terday heird of three Whigs who had avowed their determination to vote for Judge Woodward •• in oaniequenaa of the course primed by the Chtzette. - Go on with.youL.abase, Beacon—go on l" The Port Is in a pretty tight place, and cannot escape by charging us with affinities which never existed, or by raising the try that we are abating Judge Woodward. We published the re ended evidence of what he attempted to do in the Reform Convention in 1837, in reference to foreigners, and we gave hie , own defence of the nouns he took on that oothelon, written in itec.. timber, 1861. It that is ""abuse," let item make the best of it. But we have not abused him, nor shall we; neither shall we deny that he bee a perfect right to bold what opinions he pleases on the subject of foreigners, and to 'advenste what _meanies he pluses, in any flirtation 'in whleh he may be .pieced, In referemov to them. All this we freely &cooed ; but at the same time we &atm some rights too. We claim' the right to search the public records of the Btate to tin wheele did and what he sold while in the exer cise of a high public trust, and to publish as much of that record as we see proper, without being justly obnoxious to the charge of abusing him. We have ..not. eittered the sanctuary , of. Judge Woodwird's private life, nor shall we; butt. we have shown, on evidence which admits of no . 00ntroverry, that he did, while in the Convention called to amend the Conniption of this State, bring forward • certain proposition which is to be found on the 441 d meet voL V. of the De. bates of the Convention,n follows: "Rewired, Theta committee be appointed to Inquire Into the expediency of so amending the Constitution — of Pennsylvabla as to prevent the Ware intivsUon Into thielltate of free persons of color, and fugitive _ slain from other States and Territories." A motion was made to mind by offering to In. We the word "foreigners," between the words wand free." This motion was pending, when We an informed on page 444, of volume 6, that "Ur. Woodward mond to amend the amend. meat, by adding thereto, the words "and that the said committee be silo Instructed to Inquire Into the propriety of so amending the Coestitzt tire, as to prevent any foreigners who may sr rive in th is State after the fourth day of July, 1841, from acquiring the right to vete or to hold once in this commonwealth.' Mr. Woodward was not content With offering this monirtrous proposition. He made o speech In favor of It, which", find on page 446.47, 6th valuta* of the Debates, and from which we quote the following chutes paragraph, : appreciate as much as any man living, th e many political tights and privileges which!, In common with the people of the United States, am now miceng; audit Is mylionest impression, that we do but squander those privileges in con. fewrinelkent upou every individual Who chooses to come and claim them. Nor coal those who should choose to come after the 4th of July, 1841, complain, for they would have bad nearly four years' notice and they werenot to share in merpothicalprissleyes. Will the Post dare to say that the above ere ..ridicedous allegations ;and deliberate false hoods?" or will it dare to publish them just as they stand It is idle to attempt to tutisaside the force of this record by such scurrility as that we have quoted. But the editors say they have written on for documents. What docomentat Do they pretend to say that they can impeach the veracity of an' . 'official repent? Not a bit of it; but look out for some miserable quibble, ouch, for instance, as that JadgeL _Woodward never was formally a member of the Native American Party. But we care nothing about their documents. There is the record, and there is his letter. They speak for themselves; and if Judge Woodwaril has Seen abused, he himself is the author of it. The Pat emphatically endorses ledge Wood ward'. democracy. It calls him a "true heart. ed Democrat." Very well, that is just what we wanted. We now know what Democracy means, as the Poet understands.that word. We shall not dispute with It on that point; but really If is a very singular political faith. Yesterday we ehifwed that the chief candidate of the democra cy was cordially greeted by the great organ of British torylsm, the London Tines, as valua ble ally to the commercial policy of . Great Bri tain;" and now we show that the mattwho utter- el the foregoing sentiments about 'foreigners, and did all he could do to depriveaech 'of them as came to settle amongst us of the privileges of citizenship, is another of Its candidates, sod is pronoauced to be "a cello-hearted Democrat." An we maid before, we shall not dispute with ed itors of the Port on that point They 'know bet- . ter than we do what constitutes a ..true-heart et" looofooo,Democrat. We suppose - it Is all right; but we hope that neither that paper nor soy of ate kin will have the impudence hereafter to attempt to pone any more blarney Into the evil of foreigner'. That's all. Teams Caress roe Gestate—From every-quar ter we hear glowing accounts of the great meeting held by the gallant Whigs of Greene county, at Cannielmeitown on the Slit nit. From two to three tbooeand pervotte were prevent on the OCIIIL6OII, many of them straightonts, who will give their rotes to "Old Chip" in November. The town was adorned with festoons of green, spanning the etreeta in several places, and with 11 tgs and banners almost innumerable. The stand for the opeakere and officers was a sub stantial erection, hung with flags and evergreens, in the public square. The delegations came pouring into town with Enable-and banners, amidst the cheers and ac clamations of the delighted people One dole piton was nearly a mile length, aol con tattled 1100 persons. In the d4l time moat attn .; lent, cogent, and stirring addresses were de livered by W. T. Willey, Eeq., of Morgantown, Vs., and by Thomas M. Gaulley, Esq., of Wheel ing, Va.;—the Whig elector for that district. At night, a very large meeting. was again held or the stand, which was addressed by James Veech, Esq., of Fayette, Hon. Gee. V. Lawrence, ot Washington, and again by Thomas M. Gaol ley, Esq , of Virginia, who, if possible, ettrpass ed his day effort. All this rpeaking was listened to with inapt niFentlon by both Whigs and Democrats, and gond and was sown, whichwiil Yield •rich bar vest in November. Well done Greene! The Jackal Poet is working, in its way, for its friend and superior, Joe Barker. 'lt says that Berker's statement to "made up of facts and G,pres ; and when published will be highly lute rejiting to the taxpayers." Well, why does not the Poet publish it? It has ammo to it, of course or it could not assert so confidently that it is made up of "fads indigene," and that it is interesting. If we had any information on which we could rely, we certainly would give it, especially if beaked up by "facts and Enures"—not Joe Bar ker facts and figures; for they are as false as the Post's pretended lore to adopted citizens—but real, genuine information we ehottid be glad to publish. But if the Poet will publish Its friend Barker's "facts and figures," which it pronotusees so interesting, we shall then be able to show, at least, how grossly he and the Poet are trying to deceive the voters of Allegheny county. The Supreme Court of this State, it will be remembered, recently granted an injunction to restrain the Sunbury ,and Erie Railroad Company from proceeding with certain work they had un dertaken, in violation of the rights of another corporadon. At the same term an application was matte by a private Individual for an injuno Lion to restrain certain parties from constructing a rail road from the State line of Ohio at the town of Erie, which is designed to connect with the NewAork and Ohio railroads, and thus car ry off frbm the Pennsylvania improvements the trade of:the North-weetern States The right to construct each a railroad has uniformly been refused by our Legislature, and it has only been obtained by one of those tricks of legislation technically known as "snakes" by which the inthoritrie quietly tacked on to another bill, and p a ss e d without the knowledge of nine-tenthe of the members. The right thus obtained ill of incalculable value to parties in New York, and, rather than forego it, they would doubtless pay the Slate a handsome bohus—probably ae much as • million of dollars—and the State has a right to dpmand such a sum for a privilege of such value, which le calculated to diminish SO 14/1104 the value of her own improvements. Bat, as the matter now stands, the State gets_ net a cent for giving away this most invaluable grant—not even a tax upon the work, thus clan destinely authorized by the legislature. It was to prevent this great wrong that the injunction we hare referred to was asked for; but the court could not grant it, from the fact that the individ nal praying for it was only a private citizen, with no equity in the ease, and no Individual rights likely to be damaged by the work complained of. The Commonwealth is the true party Interested in the case, and the only party whose rights are likely. to be considered as entitled to the Inter- trence of the court for protection egainet the foreign corporations. The only remedy, there fore, In the matter, is an application on the part of the Commonwealth for the injunction which the court could not grant to a private Individual.. Unhappily, the Commonwealth is in extremely awkward poeition, which incapacitates her from moving in the premises. Her Attorney General, by whom all her legal actions are to be brought, is retained by the opposite parties, and is thus pledged, not only to refrain from all proceedings against them, but obliged to defend them against all actions brought by the State of which he is the sworn ingot adviser and couneet. Thus the work so injurious to the State goes on, without opposition from her, and the people areeompell ed to look on, powerless to prevent the injury, while the proper officer of the State is engaged in the invade° of her opponents. Unless some remedy Is advised speedily, this outrage upon the rights of Pennsylvania, will be irretrievably consummated, and the trona:cry will receive not a rent for a privilege that is worth millions to others, and the surren der of which is o surrender of millions ky her and her citizens. We take it for granted that the sterling good sense and sound Pennsylvania feeling of Governor, Bigler, will at once see the impropriety of retaining to office an Attorney- General who has thus preferred the service of New York capitalists to that of his own State, ' and whose present position forbids any proper interference on the part of Penneylvania, to a matter of such vest moment to her nod her chi. lens. Such clients as the New York railroad eapitalists are ready to pay clausal any sum, for terriers either done to theta or neglected towards tLa State, and it is of the utmost importance that Pennsylvania ebould have a man no her le. gal representative who la not only totally fret from all kinds of association with foreign lateracts, but sincroly devoted to her own pros perity and wealth. —Phila. Ledger. The facts set forth in the above article, pre sent oar State in a very anomalous and extraor dinary position: sad there pre some further facts, mentioned above, which realer the case still more extraordinary. The charter on which this Railroad from Erie to the Ohio State 'line is be ing constructed, was not one of those "snakes" which wan smuggled thr ough , as is erroneously elated, but it is a charter granted for'ionother purpose entirely, and it is for this perversion of the grant of the Legislature, that the injunction is asked. The charter is the Franklin canal char ter, which gives authority to construct a canal or railroad, from the mouth of French Creek, br way of Meadville, to Lake Erie, at the town of Erie. Without making a single foot of the lino for which the charter in specifically granted, the nnpany is constructing a tend in a direct line from Erie to the Oblo State line, along the Lake shore. To put a stop to this ontragn'of seizing upon a prisiteget which she State had always re fused to grant,She lost Legislature plumed an riot giving to the Rapreme Court original Junin. dictionin this, and similar caste. Application was then made to the Attorney General to insti tute legal proceedings, and to prevent any loss o the Commonwealth, so offer was made to en ter into bonds to save the State all expense. The Attorney General, for the reason given above, refu sed to discharge his duty, red is thus Indirectly a party to the fraud against the interesuiand dignity of elle Commonwealth. If he has taken a retaining fee from the opposite party, decency requires him to resign his position, and not stand in tho way of the State testing her rights before the Supreme Court. We are astonished that Gm Bigler will submit to such an outrage upon the dignity and rights of the Common. wealth. HADA= SONTAG—COUITIVIS MM.—This oclebrated queen of sang in now in New York, having arrived in the Arctic. We take from the New York Tribune, the following eketob of her life: 11111111 - SITI Sono was born in Coblents. on the 13th of May, 1805. Her parents were sta ture and her father was considered, in southern Germany, RA a thoughtful and excellent repre sentative of comic characters—characters which often require for their fealty more really true gravity than the higheot walks of tragedy. A recent Gentian publication of high authority rays, that ''the effect of 80XTAG'a first appear anee upon the European stage, especially in Ps. via, was almost wonderful. Besides the extra ordinary purity, clean:leas, and attractiveness of bee voice, and its rare flexibility, she possessed a lightness, neatness and elegance of utterance, quite unparalleled. If Pasta surpri.ed her in strength and full ness of expression, and Mallbran in universali ty; If Catalini was her Importer in facility and greatness of style, yet Sontag stands far before them in that refined delicacy of art, which springs only from perfect cultivation. She does • not aatonieh as touch by tho imposing strength of her tones, but she magically enchants us by their tiuto•lttke passages which she for the meat art produces with most perfect articulation, moving her hearern chiefly by the delicious qua lity of simple singiug. if she he not wonder. fully great In heroic and the tragic, the is unpar alleled in the sentimental and the play fel, and in general in that which rather touches the heart than the judgment of her hou'rers. With the exception of those above named,(to whom may probably he added Jenny Lind,) it • may be said that no songstrese, has or may soon appaar, who can come near to Sontag in the 'aqui • site taste and originality of her style. InlBBo, she aimed her dramatis, careve at Berlin, in the Semiramis of Itoesini. The enthusiasm, the ex citement, the almost madnese, of the public on that °session, is indescribable. Every one felt that art bad suffered a great loss in the retiring of this magnificent talent. From Berlin' she went to Russia, singing at St, Petersbargh and Moscow with woriderfal anocess and effect. Bite then returned to the Netherlands, and sang it I the Hague for the last •time, in concerts only. Soou after this her previously privately consum mated marriage with Count Rossi was made public, and she thenceforward practiced her art only in private and by herself; first with her hus band at the Hague, and then for a considerable time in Frankfort-am-Main. In 1884 she went with her husband to Naples, whence the Count expected to go as Sardinian Charge d'Affaires! to .Itio Jeaeiro; be wan in fact banished into honor-' I able exile. Ceder all circumstances, however, they have lived in perfect domestic happiness." Daring 1848-49, Count Rossi lost all his pro petty, and since that period, as our readets well know, his wife has, with that devotion which is always characteristic of a true woman, returned to the public practice of her 'noble art, (In Con certs only,) in order to retrieve the disasters of revolution. " The - lateeecretuontraat made by tho Ca4l Commissioners witli Bingham . &.Doek, foe carry ing passengers over the Colombia Railroad, is daily disolotiag the,•atrongeet kind of evidence of the inefficiency and favoritism of the Oanil Board. Of all the attempts to rob the State, It is the boldest 'and grandest scheme that has yet been brooght to light, and nnlesethe CanalComi miseioners are partnere in the matter and draw their share of the simile, we are entirely at a loss to account for the reeklessness displayed by them for entering Into each o contract. By Ito terms they agree to pay flee mai, per mile for all through paasengers, when at the same time there are able and competent men willies to do the tame work for th• et mil &. In corroboration of this we poblieh the following offer of David Miller, who for the last twelve yesre has ran a line of care over the State road, and knows all about the matter. Mr. Miller says: '-Now, to satisfy the Canal Commissioners, Bingham 4. Dock. and the public in general, that there In no humbugging in what I have sta ted, I make the following proposition to Bing ham ft Dock, sir:—l will, in connection with re sponsible men, agree to - carry all passengers .. over the State road, for them, at It milli per mile, or 29 cents, and C mills for all through - passengers, by which thej Will . This propoeition I dare them to accept. I have made it in good faith, with a fall knowledge of what I am about, and believe that I understand the expense of Wl reading quite as well as those who hold the dap tract. DAVID MILLER. There it is, and that is the way in whirl; the tax-payers are fleeced to gratify the appetite of the plunderer.. In clew of much facts, Senator Aluhlenberg, of Berke county, was fully jtustlfied in saying as he did in the Senate laid winter, thnt "under the present management of the Pablia Work., they wi" be a positive lees to the State," - So shamefully have the Public Works been managed, and so bold has been the robbery of the Public Fonds by the hungry office holders along the whole line, that the editor of the Becks County Press, one of the lending organs of Lo cofocotem in the State, declared that the title of the 4pproprimion 11111 of the last session of the Legislators ought to have read: "An net to In most, the State debt, to plunder the State, and to feed Ike hungry brigands and plunderer, who turret the public, Canals and Railroads, awl to continue the circulation of poisonous and untron atitutional ahltiplasturs." Testimony like this ohould open the eyes of the people to what is their true Interest.
