I was eurprieed at his writing so freely upon • subject on which he is evidently not informed. It in a bold fact, well known to the shipping world, for the last three yeses, that seamen are wit difficult to procure in Ban Francisco. The clippers" arriving there are almost universally deserted by their crews within twenty.four hours after dropping anchor. The cargoes are die. charged at the docks with dispotch'by the "ste •edore," and the shipping of ,new crews is the leek most dreaded by ship-owners and con signee'. Wages for 1851 enraged $5O to $6O per month for coasting trade, $6O to $BO for foreign, and $l5O to $l4O " for the run," to Canton and Calcutta ; and tenets, after waiting weeks, had then frequently to take half crews end ran over to Sandwich Islands and try to - make tip this. compliments. Wages this season are reduced, bat firm at $9O to $5O for coasting, $5O to $BO for foreign, and $l2O to $lBO to 1 Canton. If Government sends the expedition to San Frandsen to get men it will never get away. Seamen Would demand $BO per month, and then ship slowly. Better'ad ranee wages and premiums in New York, where men can be had. , and then the expedition may praised—otherwise 1 fear it will prove an abortion. As to the demand being great for "passage, home by unfortunate landsmen and sailors," let any one try to hire these "unfortunates" and they will find they are not to be had for less than $5 per day for mining or building purposes, and for farming $5O to $6O per month, with board, and eery independent at these prices. The immigration of labor to California and Influx of gold In Atlantic Slates has appreciated the value of labor everywhere, and Government cannot longer expeot to get seamen unless she liberally advanees her wages.
