PITTSBURGH GAZETTE Hebrew ~.?tneient Hebrew writing stands .pre eminent in tile literature of the world. It peculiarly distinct from that of any 'tl'r age or people. The Jews have al maintained peculiar. characteristica, make them ,essentially different in reit- principles, customs and manners, ota all the other nations of the earth; this is true, whether we compare there ..:_the :patent people amongst whom they lelt prior to the Exodus from Egypt; or • Those by whom they were surrounded in lend of Palestine, after they became a ...p:trate people and a great nation; or to Le various populations of the earth .eiongst whom they have Leen scatty sac t the destruction of their great temple . • ,Jerusaleui and its worship, and their . among the Gentile nations on the face of the earth. Phe many,: of their religion, and their ,bit>, a, governed by it; their superior ,clutvh.dg, of the Deity, and their acquaint with moral truth; their high concep • .on of the Creator of the Uniyerse, and of th I najestio works, were more sublime, autiful, more harmonious and cat .-e , l illm those of any other people; and •rbile tLir thoughts and their sentiments save mor' elevated and refined, their ma e'en more .pure, their rites more and their piety more ardent—in 'piling them with affections, sympathies nd 31.1 rations of the west ezalted ater. The people of all other nations lowtd before idols and sacrificed to their m •aginary deitiesZ_but the Hebrews alone 4orahipped the High Supreme and Holy t let. And while all others were corned' Atli obduracy and ignorance, by their 3ed superstitions, • the religious sentiments and feelings of the Jews were obrmancntly impressed upon their lives nd their literature, and became the chief icell•ncc which dirtinguished them, both ii hi,torp, selectee end poetry—the three ieal departments of civil excellence and literary greatneFs. The wisdom of the , hilerophy of every other people was ,'ouneled on the fallible teachings of men; bat the record of the Hebrew patriarchs md prophet: speaks the language of the oracles of divine inspiration—the only in• fallibie literature of time. The sacred chronicles of Hebrew history .tr, unfailing monuments of the superiority vl their learning, containing, as they do i :be onlyrcliablairccords of their ecclesias tical, civil and 'military history, and of 'hair moral precepts, religious ordinances rid iitual ceremonies; and these are so in- timately and, essentially connected with aristianily, that they cannot he destroy ,el. or separated from it, without marring :he harmony and effacing the beauty of the whole system. Upon these the grand su perstructure of Christianity is built, and upon them it must rest, becany they intro .itica.d the grand ideas of i' re the wlrld, and predicted its founder; t.ot in terms of ,h. doubtful phraseology of nestiten era. 4 it=, interme:cd to accord with parsing s!‘•••14. • and fabulous historic, but in the clear anti explicit language of inspired prophecy, fulfilled in the after events of human history, which also attests their ~ i ltie and superiority. Among the relhFs if ancient learning, transmitted to the present time, the books of the Retire* poet% and prophets stand - pre•eminent as iternry productions, possessing the most ; :srfcct t-xcellence and beauty incorporated •ti the literature of any agc. They are cl i ins trawl . for tichness and pecity of 1:.-e gat, sublimity and grandeur of style, or and elevated morality, energy and 11 mks of language, and for splendor and 7,•-va. imazery. The philosophy of the e ks embraced many sound views of r I truth, and its teachings inculcated .1 correct doctrines and elevated senti i 45 but they wanted the sublime ill. i g and spiritual inspiration which im those of the sacred authors. The a-,1 <ow the distani‘glimmerings of the rent, of morality' and science as 140. ass, darkly," while to the t.,:, were revealed as clear as . ightile-s of the meridian sun; and, astanding the ancient philosophers ;.ire not the subjects altogether of a blind ouper:dition, yet their ideas of the Deity, on.; of .Ilia existence and attribute., were :united . and imperfect, when contraiited *rith the sublimer views of the inspired oro,ra ; and more especially do they feil I:, beer a comparibon with the more r salted t, , ,ettings of Jesus of :Nazareth. Indeed. the Hebrew writers arc everywnere fall of t'e.: , .se loftier and purer ideas of truth, whether revealed or natural. Who, in an limit and modern tiFacs, has excelled the 'Ofrystrains in which David celebrated the tt-it..dom, geode:ice', power, greatness and ~gtory. of the Most High? What book el ec.-As that of Isaiah in richness and beauty of eloquence, or in sweetness and depth of energy ?or the book of Job in aptness of imogeg and boldness of style ?—" A piece g wasting," says Schlegel, " which, con dared merely as such, is, without doubt. n ode of. the most eh ristie and sublime wttieh'..has come down t us from the an eirut world." Where d we find such no curate and faithful historians as those of the Bible? Where is there found a moral Cede which abounds with more correct pre cepts and useful maxims, for the govern ment of society and the regulation of hu • man conduct, than that which is set forth in the five books of the Pentateuch, the Proverbs and the four Gospels, by Moses, Solomon and Christ. "The peculiar faith and confidence in God," continues the author just quoted, "which were the in heritance of the Jews, are expressed with lees .Mosaie mystery as we advance in the sacred volume, and appear in their full light in the nalms of David, the allege. lies of Salomon, and the prophecies of Isaiah. These works, set forth with a splendor and Sublimity which, considered merely as poetry, eicite our wonder, and dladain alLcomparistin with any other som positions • they form a fountain of fiery - and godlike inspiration, of which the greatest of modern poets have never been -weary of drinking, which has suggested to them their noblest images and anima led them for their most magnificent flights." It is to the sacred oracles, above all other books, we should go to learn how much we are indebted to the Divine Mind for the vastness of our conceptions of the infinite, the beautiful and the eternal, and the cor rectness of our sentiments, the putity of our affections, and of our moral aspirations and sympathies;, the beauty and spiritual ity of our religions faith and devotion. -._ In comparing the Old with the New Testament, notwithstanding the difference of style which characterize the various Irritern, still wo find in' each desveloped squat depth of thought and, eloqueneei-of language, and equal brilliancy of imagism lieu, forevnt style, and energy of diction. In the simple sketches of him, who spoke as man never spoke," and as exhib• itsd in his unequalled sermon on the mount, and in the epistles of Paul—the richest productions of the strongest minds and most powerful intellects of any age— we see the superior energy and beauty of Biblical literature; and in the extempora neous and unpremeditated speech of the Prisoner-Apostle, before King Agrippa, touching the things .whereof he was ac. cased of the Jews, there is more of true eloquence - ,- than in the high-toned, far famed orations of Demosthenes or Cicero; and, although the eloquence of ono shook the throne of Philip, and the eloquence of the other the Foram and the Senate, yet, when the pihfoner speaks, kings bow to listen and admire--Agrippa fears and p o. lin trembles at his eloquence, and Paul la honored axe Roman. But the pen of the great Apostle-most honors his name to posterity. Paul has never been equalled as a writer; having surpassed all othere, ',i':;,';''..':'4 , :.•: . . , : , . ,,,,.... : Indent or modern, in whatever belongs to I Amodio:me, power and beauty in an author. Ho alpds as a sun in the grand system of the iffiallectual luminaries of the world.— 'His epistles are the purest models of fine writing, as well as of powerful reasoning' and superior argumentation. Nor is superiority and excellence in sa- I cred authorship peculiar to the writings of Paul alone. Superiority and excellence characterize all the books of the sacred canon. Every where there is found in them that which, because of the superior value with which they are inverted, asserts their claim to the first place in the stand-1 ard literature of every age. The Bible, then—the great honk of the world's history—is the most important book of the world's literature—the most valuable collection of the learning and progress of human society, pesseasing more that is of the highest and most available import to the duties and interests of the rats- of man than any other book, or than all other books, known in human lan guage; because from it has been derived all the important elements of human learning, human society and human government—it being the only book whose authority is svfficient to impart purity in morals, excel lence in civilization, and power in the principles of social organization and civil legislation Upon its teachings and its authority has been founded the moral principles and precepts, and the civil ordi nances and laws which govern society All that is excellent and beautful in the customs and laws of society and govern went, has been derived from the Scrip tures. The Bible is the foundation of the prime institutions of church and state. It has introduced, perpetuated and promoted all the great principles of theology. , et. once, civilization and literature, and what ever relates most essentially to the perma neat progress, improvement, elevation and happiness of man. titIUSES, FARMS, &o For Sale FOURTEEN area best unbroken Coal Law!, tome Hommh or Cml In Lim •ielaitr Win br snll nutb...r nutianit.drer Manoliartur, • r city Prot.n, Atoll to CUNT.S.
