.- '-." ! !V V 4' -," 'K fffl THE SCRANTON TRIBUNE-SATURDAY, JUNE 30, 1900. i LIVE NEWS OF THE INDUSTRIAL WORLD TESTING ONE OF THE LACKA WANNA HOO ENGINES. It Was Taken Over the Heaviest Grade on the Ontario and Western by Way of an Experiment Tho Board for Today Hallway Men We Watching with Interest the Testing of the Passenger Engines on tho Bock Island Road New En gines Received by Central. Superintendent A. C. Salisbury, Mas ter Mechanic T. S. Lloyd and Superin tendent J. M. Daly, of the Lackawanna road, took ono of tho now "hog" en sines to Mayfleld on the Ontario nnd Western road yesterday afternoon, for tho purpose of testing Its usefulness on the grade there, which is considerably steeper than any grade on the Dela ware, Lackawanna and Western road. The englnemen on tlie Lackawanna complain that it is a physical impossi bility for ono man to "fire" the big locomotives to the required speed on tho many Lackawanna grades, and have asked for an additional fireman to assist in the work. On the other hand, it has been dem onstrated by the offlclals that the en gine are equal to tho emorgency, nnd that it is possible for one man to per form the work, If tho proper Instruc tions are carried out. Instead of building up steam before reaching the grades, It is known that several fire men have "put on coal" on the grade, thus depleting the steam power. Thoy are expected to wait until the grade Is passed. The test made yesterday was quite satisfactory to the ofllclals, and dem onstrated that tli engine nnd appll nnces are up to tho standard repre sented by tho locomotive builders. Similar engines on tho Ontario and "Western are operated without any dif ficulty. D., L. & W. Board for Today. Superintendent Foley, of tho Lacka wanna railroad telegraph service, was in the city yesterday and made ar rangements whereby tho Western Union will furnish messenger boys to meet nil first-class trains and deliver messages for passengers, without the latter having to leave their seats. The dining car, baggage transfer and messenger service on the Lackawanna railroad Is the host obtainable, and is appreciated by the general traveling public. Big Engine Is Speedy. Railway men of all classes are watch ing with much Interest the tests of the "1200 series" of engines of tho Rock Island rond, the largest running out of Chicago In passenger Fervlce. Engine No. 1201 was given Its first severe test for power and speed last week. Tho patrons of tho Rock Island's ilrst ex cursion to Colorado occupied fourteen of tho largest nnd heaviest coaehrs. This was enough for two trains to be pulled by ordinary passenger engines ot tho day, considering tho speed ro ciulred. The big engine did all that was expected of it and more. Rotween Chicago and Rock Island it pulled that train of fourteen roaches with ease on sehtdule time, nnd when called on for n little extra effort developed a speed of over seventy-two miles nn hour. Engines of that class will haul all the special trains which will bo used by tho Rock Island In its series of Colorado excursions, at tho rate of one faro plus $2 for the round trip. Threo more excursions will be given, leaving hero July 9, July 17 and August 1. Tho departing time of tho special trains will be 4.45 p. m but on the dates named excursion tickets wilt nlso ba honored on all regular trains. The special trains to bo used are high class throughout. Through dining car ser vice is provided and tho run from Chi cago to Colorado Is made with only ono night on thu road. Excursion rates will he made to Colorado and Utah from all points on tho line of the Rock Island between the MUsourl river nnd Chicago. Chicago Inter-Ocean. Collieries Working Steadily. Tho reason the collieries hereabouts are working bo steadily at present Is attributed lo the heavy demand made for anthracite coal In the west. Here tofore the D. S. & S. Railroad company shipped four trains a day to Perth Amhoy, the destination of which was " for towns in the west. At present only ono train is shipped over the Valley to Jersey, the other threo going over the Pennsy'a lines bound for the west ern states. Not alone is the D. S. & S. sharing In the prosperity, but likewise A. Par dee & Co. During the past week the 99c a Leg 99o a Leg 99c a Leg 99c a Leg 99c a Leg latter have been loading coal In Pennsy cars. The chief fuel being sent west is called "steamboat." Cranberry colliery has orders enough on hand to keep It working steady for some time, but the means nre not on hand for mining the coal. Hnzleton Sentinel. This and That. It is a settled fact now that the Erie railroad will have a now fast train be tween Cleveland nnd New York, with a possible Pittsburg connection. A deal has been consummated where by the Iowa Central railroad passes Into the possession of the Minneapolis and St. Louis road. Tho presumption Is that the two roads will be operated separately. Duncan & Wills, of Duncannon, have purchased 4,100 acres of timber land In Huntingdon county. As It Is situ ated ten miles from a railroad it Is re ported that a branch will be built con necting with the land. Nos. 458 and 459 of the new Central passenger engines were received yes terday from the Urooks Locomotive work3 at Dunkirk, N. Y and assigned to the New York nnd New Jersey divis ions. Tho Illinois Central sent out of Kvansvllle last Thursday a solid train of twenty cars loaded with 1,000,000 pounds of Hour for Havana, and on last Sunday 1,000,000 pounds of tobacco en route for Liverpool, England, and Helfast, Ireland. Work has been commenced on the new passenger station of tho Pennsyl vania Itailroad company at Elizabeth town, Lancaster county. The build ing will bo of brick, 30xC0 feet, and when llnished will be one of the hand somest and most conveniently ar ranged stations nlong tho Philadelphia division. It will require about 20,000 cubic yards of earth to till in around the now station. Owing to the recent heavy rains a number of landslides have occurred at the now cut at Ellza bethtown, and tho section gang has been kept busy removing the earth from the tracks nnd keeping a watch for such occurrences. Y. Concluded from rase 0. The hong selected ns tho ono to bA sung In competition for tho Kaiser's prizo was selected from moio thnn three hundred submitted by composers from nil over tho world. It Is "Dai Deutsche Lied." The muslo Is by Peter Kassbacnder, a Swiss composer, and the words by Adolph llnchtmnnn. Pn-sldent S. K. Saenerr, of the United Singers of Brooklyn, found the words in an old scrap-book. The music was chosen by Prank Damrosch, Emll Paur and Julius Lorcnz. A liberal transla tion of the words Is as follows: I thought of you, you holy valley ot my homo, As often 1 dreamt, dreaming of the future; And as I thought of you ai for tho first time in a utrance Country I heard of home, and of home's hap penings The tune uatol over here to me a wonderful, wonderful, touching song. How they take the heart a prisoner; oh, hear ince rontrs, these tunes that resound I that resound. Then It came over me, as though with sight of the future. And, ns the tune's last echoes died an ay, I lifted my head Freely to the light of tho stars, and looked thankfully back on the past. The Kaiser's prize, to bo awarded for the best rendering of this song, Is of the finest workmanship. The design is said to have been suggested by tho emperor nnd he devoted considerable time to Its consummation. The fig ure is that of n minnesinger of the twelfth century. It is of solid sliver, exquisitely moulded and carved with minutest nttentlon to details. The llguro Is more than a foot high and tho bronze uedestal Is even taller. Upon the side of the pedestal is n bas relief of tho emperor, surrounded by the American and German Hags; on the opposite side nro the arms ot Prussia and the words of dedication. At thq corners of the pedestal leaves of palm and laurel relieve the sharpness of tho design. Ever since the stntuette arrived In this country it has been safely stored at tho ofilces of the German consul. It will not be unboxed until (Juno 30, when Ambassador von Holleben, In ac cordance with the emperor's Instruc tions, will acknowledge Its receipt and turn it over to the hosts of the Saen gerfest. COAL PRODUCTION. Output of Anthracite for June Will Exceed That of Other Years. Philadelphia, June ID. The indica tions are that the anthracite coal pro duction of tho state of Pennsylvania for tho month of Juno will exceed that of nny similar month for years. Con servative estimates place the Juno pro duction at 4,230,000 tons, which is 2Z0, 000 in excess of June, 1S99, and a ha'.i million tons in excess of the agreed upon tonnago for the month.
