LL.D., Secretary of American Society of Religious Education. INTIIODIJCTION. The sermon on the mount Is an excellent description of the model man or the truo Chris tian. It was designed to exalt the Ideals and awoken the desires of Christ's followers, the chief purpose of nil Scripture. It may bo divided into seven great parts, The rectlon before us fall-! In tho ilfth part and presents three rules for a r.inn among his fcl lowmen, thus -i tttle of Judgment (veises 1-ui, n rule ot action (verses C-12) and a ruin ot pergonal safety (li lt). These follow In logical order. What a man thinks concerning others these are the thtee pinmlnent toples In our Lord's teaching, thote upon which all men need to vesiow thought In order to llv- lightly In a world llko this. Before studying this pnssag' one "hnuld lead the termon rntlre, and thus obtain thf general diif: and In tent of the dlcourse. JimnMENT (verses I and 2).-Jtsus did not Intend to condemn the forma tion of nn opinion concerning othera. That cannot well bo avoided. Morn over, It Is necessary in a protection against tho evil and Is cnjolne-l by the Saviour for that reason (Matt . vll: n-16). Neither did He torbld the Judicial service which must be ren dered in the chinch and state against offenders, both of which are required (Matt., xvll:17 In the interest of so ciety. It Is possible, as some Inter preters urge, that He desired to cor rect the habit of censorlousncss or cx tieme and harsh criticism, although that was not hi? chief purpose In these two verses. It Is evident that He sought to enfoice a spiritual law and to show the rellex Influence of Judging otheiF If we form adverse opinion of men to Indict damage upon outselvos and, while we must do this at times we should refrain as much as possible to avoid personal Injury (Rom., 11:1). Probably nothing so much mars tho character. mrOCIlISY (verses 3 to 5). The advice of Jesus w.ib not altogether on prudential gt omuls. Frequently men criticise othei'rf with an affectation of superiot goodness, expecting to exalt themselves by their exposure and con demnation of faults (Rom., 11:1). These people are the worst of hypociit03. They do not care for the cause of righteousness, but tor the possible ap proval of thosti who hear them. The Saviour's remonstrances and rebuke are timely. Why should one attempt to cure in anclher what exist!) In himself In - a l.irger and more often lve form'.' lie tan ccrtnlnlv do n'j one any good. His wiso policy would be to begin at home. Correct Ills own faults and then he might be able and useful in helping a neighbor. Below this counsel Is a wholesome ptinciple applicable to all woikeis for God and humanity. But thereare bad people In the world, those whoso defective characters are observed by all. And there are good people, the ex cellence of whom no one will deny. And these latter may properly ho en listed In behalf of tho former. Indeed, It Is their duty by all menus In their power .to seek to recover the sinful from their wnyR (James, verse 20). Not to attempt such service would be proof that the heart was not right. And yet there nic limitations. It sometimes occurs that a man has gone so low In vice and crime that he would resent any approach and he would even do harm to the one who made the Ap proach. Jesus likens these to savage dogs, who would turn and rend a per son why might attempt to do good (Prov. ix:7). We may mistake tin! character of tho ungodly about us, but If convinced that they are of this class we should retire from them (Hos. Iv:17). PRAYER (Verses 7 and S). The pre cepts already given show that the Christian's relation to the world Is ex tremely dellcnto and dllilcuH. He must not Judge to nvold Injury, certainly not until free from the faults ho con demns, hut he must Judge so as to escape the unworthy. For such a task he needs wisdom, and that suggests prayer (James 1:6). There Is not a break In Christ's language here. The connection is very close. He held that men who would have rights thoughts and conduct toward others must pray, and proceeds to encourage that exer cise by giving the law ot prayer (I John 111:22). A very simple law it is: Ask and receive. And yet It is not so sim ple as the phrase would Indicate. What Is asking? The answer to that ques tion may be found in Scripture. It Is possible to ask amiss (James lv:2). Faith must prompt (James 1:6) and submission must attend (Matt. xxv:39) every request made. EXAMPLE (Verses 9 to 11). The law of prayer having been stated In very positive terms. Jesus next shows its reasonableness, and In that illustrates Its natuie. He represents God as a lather and the Christian as a child, which relation was also the initial thought In the model prayer (Matt. vl:9). And then appealing to the bet ter sentiments of their own hearts. He i. lestlons whether a father would deny a child any good, or substitute some thing Injurious when a blessing was asked. If earthly parents know how to meet the need of a loved child, grant ing what was best and withholding what is Injurious, surely the heavenly j. ather would do the same. This ex ample Is moio than an encouragement; it Is an explanation. God does, in deed, give when His children ask rightly, but He g'lves not according to their asking, which at times is In great selfishness, but according to Ills wis dom and love. woith league missionary service at 0.30; even ing preaching at 7.30.
