It Is Thought That There Will Bo a Considerable Amount of Activity in tho Building Trades All During the Winter, Although Nothing Phenomenal Is Anticipated Out look for Next Yoar Is Bright, ns Most Architects View the Pros pects at This Time. While no very lnrpe buildings nre now In course of construction In this city pave the silk mill at Monsey avo nue and Poplar street, there is a good deal of activity In building circles and will be during tho winter months, al though nothing In the way of a phe nomenal winter Is anticipated. There is a division of sentiment among architects as to tho outlook for next spring, but the concensus of opin ion Is that there will be a moderate sort of boom in this city when tho weather breaks after tho coming win tor. There wero several reasons advanced by thoye who think mere ulll be n building boom in the spring In support of their views. The principal one wnn the re-nctlrn which should occur after the general depressed state of tho building trade during th past summer, caused by the strike. Prospect I v build era ho held off lettlllt,' contracts Will. ll Ia expected, hold off no longer after spring. NO LARGE nUILDINOS. There will bo no large buildings of nny size erected In ttm Central City with the exception of the new Young Men's Christian association building, work on which will probably be begun In the early spring. Tho greater por tion of the buildings to he constructed will he dwellings, and these will he erected principally on tho new plots of land being boomed and offered for sale by local real estate men. Aichltect E. G. Worden, when seen, said that he considered the outlook for building In the earlv spring to he very good, as evidenced by plans which ha Is preparing. He pointed out that a, i large number of small dwellings would be erected in various sections of tho city by employes of the Lackawanna railroad, who have been ordered to re move to this city. The building to ba done this winter, Mr. Worden said, would not be of much Importance, as all work to be done Is being done now and rapidly pushed to a finish. E. Lancely, representing Architect L. C. Holden, stated that tho outlook for spring was very good and thar. h t mere wouiu aiso ne muen ouuuing mis ( wlntor. Among other buildings being M constructed at the present tlmo under ! his supervision, he mentioned Klat ; Brothers' fcllk mill, near the bolt and nut works, which Is now half com pleted, and which will be finished about January 1. This Is a two-story brick structure, 17G by 1C fct In size, nnd will be occupied by this firm as an ad junct to their Carbondulo mill, THE PECK RESIDENCE. Mr. Langely stated that work was begun on a ne residence last week, located nt Jefferson nvouuc and Olive street. This will be owned nnd occu pied by F. L. Peck, the lumber man, and will bo one of tho handsomest and largest residences In the city. It will bs constructed partly of limestone and mrtlv nf lniff lirlolt nnd wl'l contain i partij. or nun uncit, anu i i contain over twenty large apartments. j ., sianic, wmrn wnen lompieieu, win probably bo the largest In the city, Is also being built under .Mr. Holden's supervision, for the Hon. William Con ncll. In the rear of his property on Vine street. This will ba CI by 41 feet in size and Is being constructed of cut stonu up to the second story, tho re mainder being wood.' Architect Hnttmnn said that he con sidered tha outlook for the spring to be very good. He will supervise tli3 erection of two large buildings In West Scranton In the spring. One of these Is tho new Patriotic Order Sons ot America hall which Is to ba constructed on North Main avenue, opposite Clarke Brothers' store. This will cost $15,000. will be three stories high nnd built of brick with i cut stone front. The other will be a three-story brick building to be built on West Lackawanna avenue for A, Porter. NOT SO HOPEFUL. Architect IT. C. Rutherford, when seen, was not as sanguine ns his brothers In the profession over the outlook for the spring. He stated 'hat unless the general prlie of building material dropped coii'ddniubly in the next few months theie would ba llttlo building done. He said that the prlco of steel had advanced from l?i cents a pound to six cents a pound, and th prlce of hemlock from jll a thousand to J20, and other mateilal in propor tion. He stated that he had several pat rons with projected larg buildings In view who were holding off on account of this particular reason. Air. Ruther ford Is now supei intending the erection ot the Paull building being constructed on Spruce stroet adjoining thn Com monwealth building. This building la three stories high, Is built of brick and Is now nearly completed, having been constructed In the phenomenally short time of six weeks. Mr Iluthf rford said that building operations this sprlns would he of a fair order only. Har' v illaekwood stuted that from prcseni Indications the coming spring would be a busy one In the bulldln llne. but that he believed thero would be little work dono this winter.
