The iron market has been compara tively quiet. The demand for pig Iron nnd billets for near-by delivery seems to have been about satisfied; und con sequently there are no more of the sen national ptices which have lately been quoted. The range on net year's con tacts, however, is well maintained, nnd chows no signs of reduction. The ore question Is causing some anxiety among furnncemen, but they will have to wait a month or so yet. The car and locomotive builders are the most active customers for finished material Just now, but there are some big contracts for structural work un der discussion Engineering and Mining Journal. Smashing Light Cars. According to Western advices to tho Wall Street Journal, freight officials aie much concerned over the large number of old freight cars which are being sent into shops for repairs at a time when pressure of traffic is exceed ingly heavy. Tho reason why an ab normally large number of cars have to be repaired at this time is said to be that the new heavy steel cars strain and crush the old ones to which they are attached in the trains. A Western ofIlel.il, dlscus'dng this new difficulty, Is reported to have said: "The new cars are the cause of much damngo to the old ones and It is not at all Infrequently that old cars aie responsible for wrecks. Thousands of old cars are being made useless by the no- patterns of steel c.rs. This marks a new era In freight car building. A. great number of the old cars are be coming wrecked by being made up in trains wheio heavier ones are used. Under ordinary traffic conditions they would last for months to come, but when forming parts of trains made up with big steel freight cars and the forty-eight ton wooden ones, they are either pulled apart by the strain or crushed by the application of air brakes. It Is estimated that within twelve months all of these light cars will have to be taken out of the service or run in trains especially made up with similar ones." t Abandoning the Canal. A deed has been filed In tho Dauphin county court for a large purchase of the property of tho Pennsylvania Canal company by the Pennsylvania Railroad company. The figures mentioned are $100,000. In addition to the conveyance of an important trust. The sale only relates to Dauphin county, so far as the pioporty of the canal company sold lies within Its lines. The property transferred Is the strip of land owned nnd partially occupied by the canal of the canal company be tween Duncan's Island, close to the junction of the Juniata and Susque hanna rivers, along the Juniata river nnd the Pennsylvania railroad to the first lock east of Newton Hamilton, In Mifllln county. By an net of tho last legislature tho canal company was authorized to abandon the old canal for public use to the extent of the Juniata division, the length of the land purchased. The ' board of directors of the Pennsylvania railroad approved the purchase on Sep tember 15, nnd the deed was given a few days ago by I. J. WIstor, prcsl d nt of th" canal company. The deed bears a $100 revenue stamp, and was filed today In the recorder's office. It Is the purpose of the Pennsylvania railroad company to utilize tho land acquired by this put chase for tracks on Its middle division. Some of the land has already been taken, and the acqui sition of tho rest has been regarded as a foregone conclusion. The buying of this property. It Is ex pected, will be the means of consider able development along tho line of the canal, us there aro a large number of ' ore mines that have been abandoned on account of hnvlng no means of I transportation for tho ores. These ) places will probably all bo mado ac , cesslble by railroad within the next year, hence a revival of what was at one time an importnnt Industry. This and Thnt. Just now the demand seems seriously impaired by reason of continued unseasonable weather October, 1899, proving to be the warmest Octo ber Scranton has seen for many a year. As a result the great majority of stores have' their early stocks still on hand, and of course have been buying practically nothing of late. This affects the manufacturer, and the inevitable happens. Down goes the price. And here is where we come in. No lot is too large for this store if prices are right--our cash is always ready for the maker of good goods whose prices are sufficiently tempting. The offer ings we are now making consist of choice lots oi jackets, so picked up for cash.
