That May Be Seen Off the Coast of California. Not onlv the mainland, but the Is lands of California, which Use from the sea like submerged mountain peaks, have wondeiful ilemtltig gardens thiough which vessels often plough with elllneulti In e-nteilng the small h.ubois whleh dot the coast. At Sunta Daib.n.i, the e-ntiance of the bay Is maze- of floating vegetation, and the Is lands off the coast, especially Santa Catnllna, aie mine- oi less surrounded The Hunting guldens an- fenmed of long htie-ann-is of kelp, which, nttached to the bottom, glow upvvnid to a distance- of to to r.0(l feet, throwing mil bioad leaves and ulr-bulbs, which act ns so many balloons to support them The effect of this Is to give- a pel feet foiest of bioad gieen leaves, Using up waid and piesc-ntlng a sluip continst to the blue water In which they grow. Oi.iceful In appeal ante, they turn at evei whim of the tide, now floating dliettly unvvaid, theli leaves high above- water, and caught by the breeze, again reaching away in long stie-ameis, thev nie among the most sti Iking and beautiful objects of the submarine world When In shore- the huge plants assume a veitlcnl position, nnd become llontlng gaidens in reality. In the bay of A-valon they present so many attractions that boats have been constructed especially to lloat over them and afford the occupants nn op poitunlty to obseive the wondeis of the ocean world These beiats aie all provided with laige plate glass windows bet into tho bottom, so the observer can sit In the boat nnd gaze down through the win dow nnd see Intensified small animals The glass, as suggested, magnifies ob Jects, and In floating along one can almost Imagine himself under the w ater and roaming nt w ill in these gar dwens of the sea. Haeh leaf or frond Is covered with patches of color, which repiesent varied animals or plants, some are purple, led, green or jellow. Here nio delicate sea anemones, which so lesemblo blooming flowe-is that they can scarcely ho distinguished ftom the tiue floweis of tho land. At the slightest noise they close up, with drawing their many coloied tentacles, then slowly blooming out again. Hoie are minute plant-like creatures that are ically animals, though grow ing In a shrubllke form, and among the wonders of this llontlng garden nie some thut give blith to minute joung. whkh become Jelly fishes, to float away nnd nt night fill the ocean with n wem deiful phosphorescent light. Sttnnge shells etnwl upon the gieat leaves, crabs that mimic their colors perfectly, and fishes of the exact tint cling to them, safe in this lesemblance fiom many enemies. The long leaves, when'unaffected by the cuuent, rise dl lectly unvvaid and form a maze of nrches down among which many stinnge forms are to be seen. Directly on the bottom n large octo pus comes limping along, throwing out Its eight sucker-lined arms, moving in n stinnge fashion, waves of color pass ing slowly over It, that seem to adapt It to the color of tho bottom over which It Is passing. Near by we catch a glimpse of a cousin, the aigonaut or nautilus, ci aw ling along, htildlng Its dellcnte shell over its head C. F Holden in Sunset AN EMBARRASSED VETERAN.
