An need gentleman und his housekeeper consti tute a household In Susquchnnna, and their old cat flndH the lines are fallen to her In pleasant plocea. Family prayers nrc the role each evening In the household, and the cat fell Into the habit of regular und punctual attend ance. No other of the cares that pro verbially crowd a oat's life was ever allowed to crowd this religious duty. At the signal for prayers she would even leave a mouse half caught, or give a doomed bird a longer leave of existence, or decorously compose her self In the lap of the housekeeper, with nn nlr of attention to the service that was highly edifying. At the llnal "amen" she went friskily about her business. Hut In nn evil day there came n kitten that was deemed super fluous, and sentence of death was passed upon It. The head of the family undertook the execution of the sen tence, and, unknown to him, the old rut was u witness of the scene. Prom that day the cat refused to nttend the morning service, and cannot now be In duced to listen to the prayers of ono who has so shocked ?ier sensibilities. She faithfully performs all other duties as before, nnd actually purrs for the family on all secular occasions, but seems to say, "Lot my religious hours alone." THE NEWS RECORD. Deceased was relict of Itov. Francis Spencer, formerly a mem ber of the "Wyoming Methodist confer ence. He was stationed nt Peckvllle nnd elsewhere In tho valley. A number of Susquehana engineers have left for St. Louis, to attend the grand International convention of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. In Windsor, May 4, C. C. Turner nnd Miss Ada Walter, both' of Susquehanna, were united In marriage. SOME ODD THINGS. A Lansboro hen recently laid n Bquare egg. A Susquehanna hen .a few days since laid nn egg bearing the letter "S." A woman, eight feet four inches high, a few evenings since passed east upon an Erie train. What a prize for some man "to have and to hold!" In a Susquehanna garden yesterday a lame magpie was seen busily em ployed gathering pebbles, nnd with much solemnity and a studied air burying them in u hole made to re ceive a post. After dropping each stone it cried, "Carrack!" triumphantly, and set off for another. On examining the spot a poor toad was found In the hole, which the magpie was stoning for amusement. Near Stnrrucca, a short time since, nn Erie handcar ran over a pig, nnd after tho event the porker had but three legs. The owner, an Inventive sort of chap, Iltted the cripple up with a wooden leg and strap, and today It's the proudest pig In the county. Truth Is stranger than fiction. SOME COPNTY CURRENCY. In tho language of the late lamented Itev. Jnsper, "The world do move." Montrose has electric lights. P. It. Harrnger, of Hnllstead, Is said to have been offered $15,000 by Scran ton capitalists for his recently-discovered red paint mine. Harrlsburg oillcials are of the opin ion that the services of the volunteers, now being recruited In this county, will not be required. It is advised, how ever, to keep the company organiza tions Intact. Hon. Galusha A. Grow has been spending a few days on his farm In Glen wood. Hnllstead has "Hungarian Itch," whatever that may be. Wide-awake Hullstead ladles will or ganize a "Village Improvement Soci ety." The semi-annual district convention of the Patriotic Order Sons of America will occur in Gibson, on Wednesday. Dr. J. J. Boyle, of Susquehanna, was last week elected president of the Sus quehanna County Medical society. The next meeting will be held at Heart Lake on the second Tuesday In Aug ust. There appears to be a lively racket In the Ppsonvllle Presbyterian church. Church lights appear to be quite numerous in this county of late. Every body appears to be catching the war spirit. "Let us have peace" In the churches, nt least! SOME FACTS AND FANCIES. Tho mills will never grind again With waters tfiat have passed; But lo! The organ man will grind the samo This season as of last! After we wallop Spain, what a "1th" we'll have' Ot one thing we are certain, that the proprietor of the new mine at Pleasant Mount will never sell coal to Spain. It Is tho season of the year when everybody foils as If he wanted to go somewhere else. One nand in the dough Is sometimes worth two feet In tho dance. A vicinity church sewing society re. cently ndopted a resolution forbidding gossip at the meetings. Nobody at tends now, except the president and secretin-, both of whom are stone deaf. Of all nail words heard here below, thn saddest are these: "I told you so!" Everybody Is supposed to be settling now nfter the moving except the trntnp. The hen which lays the Easter egg U a great bird, hut It takes the goose vhv'i lays tho golden egg to bring the .Easter bonnet. "'" A nS.w" mineral, called adamawollte, im fieen discovered near Port Jervls, nnd It is said that It will cut steel. Adwnuscollto will (111 a long-felt want. A sad end ing of a checkered life. Thcro Is a minor that Susquehanna county's volunteers may become a part of John "Wanamaker's regiment. Let us hope that the lioyi will not bcomo "sandwich nnn," and be used for ad vertising purposes. Hon. James T. DuPois, ot Hullstead, United States consul-general to St. Gaul, Switzerland, has been notified by tho government to hold himself lit readiness, as ho may bo recalled at a moment's notice mid bo eent to the front The next convention of tho Subiuo hanna County Sunday School associa tion will probably bo held In Harford. The nnnual examination of the Har ford Soldiers' Orphan's school Is being held on Monday, Tuesday nnd Wednes day of this week. OTHEP. COUNTY NOTES. II. C. Hlefler, of Forest City, en Fri day attempted Miictde by the morphine route. Ho has family troubles of his own. Itev. T. Aurtol Hughes, formerly a pastor of ths Montrose Baptist church, has been dismissed from his late charge the Fifth Baptist church, In Ncwark.N. J., with a large number of tho church members. The ex-pastor and his adher ents have organized a new church or society. The funeral of Mrs. J. M. Tho Summer Normal school will be gin on Monday, May 23, In Montrose. IN A LINE OH TWO. Flags, fireworks and potatoes are "going up." Benutlful Farvlew, one of the most picturesque spots in the country, Is be ing improved for the coming hcason. Delaware nnd Hudson Superintendent Mnnville's Summer cottage at Farvlew commands one of the finest views in Pennsylvania. He has splend'd scen ery enough for a dozen men, and 1 halt envy him some ot It. The Delaware nnd Hudson company will on "Wednesday adopt the tonnage system In making up trains. The Erie adepted the system some two years since. In tills section or neck o' land, quite a number of enterprising persons are preparing to prospect for valuable min erals of various kinds. Let us indulge tho hope that they will strike some thing besides "excellent Indications." Managers of county fairs are already mapping out work for the Fall exhi bitions. A county fair Is the best vis iting place In the world. The assertion that the same ox. pumpkin and bed unlit go to the fair every year Is a gross libel upon the ox! Whitney. BASE BALL.
