CALLED-VARIOUS NEWS NOTES.
Special t tho Scranton Tribune.
Kusquchannn, May 10. An need
gentleman und his housekeeper consti
tute a household In Susquchnnna, and
their old cat flndH the lines are fallen
to her In pleasant plocea. Family
prayers nrc the role each evening In
the household, and the cat fell Into the
habit of regular und punctual attend
ance. No other of the cares that pro
verbially crowd a oat's life was ever
allowed to crowd this religious duty.
At the signal for prayers she would
even leave a mouse half caught, or
give a doomed bird a longer leave of
existence, or decorously compose her
self In the lap of the housekeeper, with
nn nlr of attention to the service that
was highly edifying. At the llnal
"amen" she went friskily about her
business. Hut In nn evil day there
came n kitten that was deemed super
fluous, and sentence of death was
passed upon It. The head of the family
undertook the execution of the sen
tence, and, unknown to him, the old
rut was u witness of the scene. Prom
that day the cat refused to nttend the
morning service, and cannot now be In
duced to listen to the prayers of ono
who has so shocked ?ier sensibilities.
She faithfully performs all other duties
as before, nnd actually purrs for the
family on all secular occasions, but
seems to say, "Lot my religious hours
alone."

Near Stnrrucca, a short time since,

THE MARKETS.
M nil Ntreet Review.
New York, May 30. Tho stock market
was largely influenced ngaln today by tho
wheat market, tho movements in which
unsettled tho lone In all speculative mar
kets. Tho stock market riming tho eaily
part ot tho day absorbed a very largo
line of offerings to liquidate profits und
tho selling for London accounts also
heavy again. Total sales for that ac
count being estimated nt over 23,000
share. Tho general demand for stocks
through commhsion houses whs snlll-
clent to tuke up these offerings at a well
sustained level of prices. There was evi
dence nlso of the operation of bull pools
here nnd thcro In tho list notably oC tho
low priced sti-.'ks which uro usually tho
most 'nucttvo and Immovable. The
sticut,th Imparted to these slocks helped
to sustain tho market and with tho ral
lying opening weakncs3 In the wheat
market there camo a poiiod ot uggrcsslva
strength In stocks which lifted prices
substantially above last night's level.
Tho lato decline was effected on a much
smaller volumo of oflerlngs than was
absorbed In the morning dealings. Short
soiling by tho boars was conspicuous. A
slump of over 1 points In Tobacco ulso
had Its effect In the late weakness. There
wero fractional recoveries befoio tho
close, which was llrm nt net losses of
over a point In somo cases. Total bales
of stocks wero 40O.5HO share. '
