"I afterward met Hhorlffa Seiner nnd Bcott, of Carbon and Schuylkill coun tlos, and wo had proclamations pub llslied In all the papers of Ilaeleton nnd posted alone tho roads. "That night I met a lot of men col lected to serve as deputies. I asked then Jf they were citizens, If they would acrVc as a pdsso coniltatue. They agreed nnd I swore them In. "I told them that It was our duty to maintain tho law nnd If we found any body violating the law we should ar rest them. I said wo did not want to hurt or shoot anybody nnd that we should not shoot unless our lives or thelrB wero In danger. "I heard n lot of McAdoo strikers wero going to mnrch on the next day, so I ordered my men to .turn out at 5 o'clock tho next morning and come armed. I said I did not enro where they got the nrms, as long ns they got them. I understood there were a lot or rifles In some store room In Hazle ton. "The next morning I heard a crowd was at Crystal nidge. I went over there with llvo deputies. The men were Just about throwing stones down on the men In the strlpplngs. I ordered thretf stii'Clhl crowds of them to dis perse and they did so, nlthough one or two spoke tmck to me. Then wo went back t& Hnstletnn nnd I got n dispatch from Uenver Meadow from Superin tendent Hullet, who said he fenred the strikers' Were coming. We wnlted, but they did not come. Then we went back to Unaleton. CHIEF DEPUTIES. "1 had tippolnted Sumuel Price chief captain, having full charge when I was nwny, nUo Thomas Hall and A. ; E. Hess and Thomas Memford, each in charge of a company. Then I came here and went back next morning. This was Wednesday. 1 had received a dls patcb fr nn Drlfton, asking me to Hwonr In deputies there. I went there and met Generul Manager I. I. Stearns, of the Coxe estate. There wero a num ber of n1 ' gathered there to act as deputies. 1 put to them the same ques tions ns ) did to the others 'and swore them In. Then we all went to Stock ton Junction nnd telegraphed to Hnzle ton. Word came back that all was (inlet. "1 went on to Cranberry alone nnd then to Hnzleton. After dinner 1 heard the mob was marching to Stockton so with some deputies I took a car. At the Lehigh Valley shops in the city limits there wns great excitement. People were running for their lives. They paid the strikers woie coming. With one Trescolt I walked out to meet them and stop them just on the city line. I told them I was tho sheriff and read my proclamation, but I had to argue with them sometime before they ngreed to inarch around tho. city. 1 went with them until they marched to Crystal Midge, and Trescott got there by n short cut. I had already sent for the deputies. We waited around the breaker until the strikers came and I went forward and told them they would have to disperse. They were sullen and stood still. At the end of ten or fifteen minutes I called four deputies nnd again told them to march. Then they started but ns they did one fellow cried: 'We've got to go boys they're too strong for us today, but tomorrow we'll come back and stop the work then.' "I warned them that they had bet ter not do It. "On Thursdny I went to Cranberry aqd dispersed some strikers who were trying to prevent men going to work. Next 1 got word of a mob nt Beaver Meadow and went over there. All wns iulel. but the (rlkers were expected. Sheriff Seizor, of Carbon county, was there alone. TIIE TURN OF LIFE Is tho most Important period Jn a wo man's existence. Owing to modern methods of living, not one. woman in a thousand approaches this perfectly natural chfHJge without experiencing a train of very annoying nnd some times painful symptoms. Those dreadful hot Hashes, sending the blood surging to the heart until it seems ready to burst, and tho faint feeling that follows, sometimes with chills, as if tho heart wero go ing to stop for good, nro symp toms of a dan gerous nervous trouble. Those hot flashes are just so many calls from na ture for help. The nerves nro crying out for nsslstnnce. The cry should be heeded In time. Lydia K. Pinkhnm's Vegetable Compound was prepared to meet tho needs of woman's system at this trying period of her life. The Vegetable Compound is an In vigorating fctrcngthener of the femalo organibm. It builds up tho weakened nervous system and enables a woman to pass thut grand change trium phantly. It does not seem necessary for us to prove the honesty of our statements, but It is a pleasure to publish such grateful words as the following : "I have been using Lydia K. Pink hnm's Vegetable Compound for some time during the chtingo of life and it has been a saviour of life unto me. I can cheerfully recommend your medi cine to all women, and I know It will give permanent relief. I would bo glad to relate my experience to any sufferer." Mns. Dki.t.a. Watson, 534 West ath St.. Cincinnati, Ohio. breaker. I said I would. Soon the mob came, an ugly desperate lot of men, determined to run through tho breaker. They charged on us and my men had to push them away by hold ing their guns like rails before them and then It was hard work. As they dispersed one man deliberately fired a pistol at us, some deputies pursuing him, but he escaped. Friday morn ing I reached Drlfton nnd found all my deputies there. Wo went to Lum ber Yard, ' a central point. At ono in the afternoon 1 got a messnge that the strikers were mnrchlng through Cranberry bound for Lattlmer. I hur ried off with the Hazleton deputies to Intercept the men at West Hazleton. While going there I repeated my In structions to the deputies about keep ing cool and avoiding trouble If posfll ble. MEETING THE MOB. "The mobs met us when we readied there. I read the proclamation and walked through them asking them to go home. One young man swore nt me violently and said they would go to Lattlmer In spite of me. I nrrested him. One man picked up n stone but dropped It when I pointed my revolver at him. "I told n crowd of spectators to go homo as the strikers were desnorato and there might be trouble. Finally the strikers left the road and started off over the lots. Soon I heard they were going to Lattlmer and I hurried off with my deputies to Intercept them. 1 toki them again to keep cool and not to shoot unless their lives or mine were r " -Si) BviHHHB wwKiw " WWifW button or lace, $4.00 grades for $2.95 button or lace, $3.50 grades for 2.45 lace only, $2.50 grades for - 1.95 russet or black, $5.00 grades for 3.95 russet or black, $3.00 grades for 2.45 russet or black, $2.50 grades for 1.95 Children's Box Calf, button or lace, 1.50; $1.50 grades for $1.15; $1.25 90-cent and $ 1 .00 grades for 6'5 cents In danger. After lining them up nlons slde tho road I told them t would go out to' meet tho strikers and try once more to dlsperso them. A deputy asked If he should not go with me. No, I said, I'll go alone, I thought one man wns enough to die at once. I felt some how there was going to bo trouble. I met the strikers about tlfty yards from the deputies and asked them where they wero going. A lot of them cried to the breaker. I told them not to go but they crowded around mo swearing nt me nnd hustling mo alongside, One man tried to crab tne, and I .then attempted to get hold of lilm, but tho crowd then Jumped on me and pounded mo about the body. I dropped my paper and pulled my' revolver. One of them tried snatch' tha revolver from mo but failed. Then ho struck mo an awful blow In tho face and knocked mo to my knees. I tried to shoot him, but my revolver would not explode. Thei the shooting commenced. It lasted about a half minute. "In the crowd I saw three men armed with revolvers nnd one with a knife, the latter made n stab at mo but missed. I was in direct lino of fire." The cross-examination conducted by Mr. Scailet lasted for two hours and will be resumed. While many minor details were brought out nothing was adduced to affect the main story. JURY PASSED UPON THE CASE. One of tho Unusual (Jnsoi Held In Aldermnnlc Court. One of the rare trials by Jury before an alderman, wns heard yesterday be fore Alderman Wright. Tho case wns that of James J, O'Malley against J. J. Walsh, both of Olyphant, in which tho former sought possession of a property bought at sheriff's sale.
