"That night I met a lot of men col

then Jf they were citizens, If they
would acrVc as a pdsso coniltatue. They
agreed nnd I swore them In.
"I told them that It was our duty to
maintain tho law nnd If we found any
body violating the law we should ar

hurt or shoot anybody nnd that we
should not shoot unless our lives or
thelrB wero In danger.
"I heard n lot of McAdoo strikers
wero going to mnrch on the next day,
so I ordered my men to .turn out at 5
o'clock tho next morning and come
armed. I said I did not enro where
they got the nrms, as long ns they got
them. I understood there were a lot

"1 had tippolnted Sumuel Price chief

in charge of a company. Then I came
here and went back next morning. This

and met Generul Manager I. I. Stearns,
of the Coxe estate. There wero a num

"1 went on to Cranberry alone nnd
then to Hnzleton. After dinner 1 heard
the mob was marching to Stockton so
with some deputies I took a car. At
the Lehigh Valley shops in the city
limits there wns great excitement.
People were running for their lives.
They paid the strikers woie coming.
With one Trescolt I walked out to
meet them and stop them just on the
city line. I told them I was tho sheriff
and read my proclamation, but I had
to argue with them sometime before
they ngreed to inarch around tho. city.
1 went with them until they marched
to Crystal Midge, and Trescott got there
by n short cut. I had already sent for
the deputies. We waited around the
breaker until the strikers came and I
went forward and told them they
would have to disperse. They were
sullen and stood still. At the end of
ten or fifteen minutes I called four
deputies nnd again told them to march.
Then they started but ns they did
one fellow cried: 'We've got to go
boys they're too strong for us today,
but tomorrow we'll come back and
stop the work then.'

TIIE TURN OF LIFE
Is tho most Important period Jn a wo
man's existence. Owing to modern
methods of living, not one. woman in a
thousand approaches this perfectly
natural chfHJge without experiencing
a train of very annoying nnd some
times painful symptoms.
Those dreadful hot Hashes, sending
the blood surging to the heart until it
seems ready to burst, and tho faint
feeling that follows, sometimes with
chills, as if tho
heart wero go
ing to stop for
good, nro symp
toms of a dan
gerous nervous
trouble. Those
hot flashes are
just so
many calls
from na
ture for
help. The
nerves nro crying out for nsslstnnce.
The cry should be heeded In time. Lydia
K. Pinkhnm's Vegetable Compound
was prepared to meet tho needs of
woman's system at this trying period
of her life.
The Vegetable Compound is an In
vigorating fctrcngthener of the femalo
organibm. It builds up tho weakened
nervous system and enables a woman
to pass thut grand change trium
phantly. It does not seem necessary for us to
prove the honesty of our statements,
but It is a pleasure to publish such
grateful words as the following :
"I have been using Lydia K. Pink
hnm's Vegetable Compound for some
time during the chtingo of life and it
has been a saviour of life unto me. I
can cheerfully recommend your medi
cine to all women, and I know It will
give permanent relief. I would bo
glad to relate my experience to any
sufferer." Mns. Dki.t.a. Watson, 534

mob came, an ugly desperate lot of
men, determined to run through tho
breaker. They charged on us and my
men had to push them away by hold
ing their guns like rails before them
and then It was hard work. As they
dispersed one man deliberately fired a
pistol at us, some deputies pursuing
him, but he escaped. Friday morn
ing I reached Drlfton nnd found all
my deputies there. Wo went to Lum

the afternoon 1 got a messnge that
the strikers were mnrchlng through
Cranberry bound for Lattlmer. I hur

Intercept the men at West Hazleton.
While going there I repeated my In

ble. MEETING THE MOB.
"The mobs met us when we readied
there. I read the proclamation and
walked through them asking them to
go home. One young man swore nt me
violently and said they would go to
Lattlmer In spite of me. I nrrested
him. One man picked up n stone but
dropped It when I pointed my revolver
at him.
"I told n crowd of spectators to go
homo as the strikers were desnorato
and there might be trouble. Finally
the strikers left the road and started
off over the lots. Soon I heard they
were going to Lattlmer and I hurried
off with my deputies to Intercept them.

In danger. After lining them up nlons
slde tho road I told them t would go
out to' meet tho strikers and try once
more to dlsperso them. A deputy
asked If he should not go with me. No,
I said, I'll go alone, I thought one man
wns enough to die at once. I felt some
how there was going to bo trouble. I
met the strikers about tlfty yards from
the deputies and asked them where
they wero going. A lot of them cried
to the breaker. I told them not to go
but they crowded around mo swearing
nt me nnd hustling mo alongside, One
man tried to crab tne, and I .then
attempted to get hold of lilm, but tho
crowd then Jumped on me and pounded
mo about the body. I dropped my
paper and pulled my' revolver. One of
them tried snatch' tha revolver from
mo but failed. Then ho struck mo an
awful blow In tho face and knocked mo
to my knees. I tried to shoot him, but
my revolver would not explode. Thei
the shooting commenced. It lasted
about a half minute.
"In the crowd I saw three men armed
with revolvers nnd one with a knife,
the latter made n stab at mo but
missed. I was in direct lino of fire."
The cross-examination conducted by
Mr. Scailet lasted for two hours and
will be resumed. While many minor
details were brought out nothing was
adduced to affect the main story.
JURY PASSED UPON THE CASE.
One of tho Unusual (Jnsoi Held In
Aldermnnlc Court.
One of the rare trials by Jury before
an alderman, wns heard yesterday be

case before Alderman Wright: Clark
Lowry, M. W. Green, James M. Pryor,
T. J. Price, It. O. Bryant and II. C.
Warner.
A verdict was found for the plaintiff.
He was given possession of the prop

Nuncupative Will vt'ns Yesterday Of
Icrcd lor I'robnte.
Register Koch was yesterday directed
to Issue a citation to the next of kin of
the late Edwin A. Wlnt, of West Mar
ket street, to show cause, if they have
any, why the nuncupative will filed by
his widow, Mary E. Wlnt, shall not bo
admitted to probate.
The allldavlts accompanying the will
set forth that the deceased on Feb. 20
lust on his death-bed declared to his
wife, Mary E. Wlnt, Eliza Strltch and
I. J. "Wlnt, his brother, that he had
made no written will, but desired that
all his property should go to his wife
and that his brother should be the ex

death-bed, signed the nflldavlt.
Under the law a nuncupative will
must be reduced to writing within six
days after It is declared and cannot be
probated untl fourteen days after It is
offered.
Letters of administration were yes

the estate of the late Hon. A. F. Mc
Nulty, of Archbald. The will of Brian
Flaherty, late of Archbald, was ad
