Two executive meetings have been held, ono a very pleasant ono at Mrs. Slmp hon's home, after a luncheon. She told us In n very Interesting and Instructive way of the necessity of women dressing health fully, of plentiful exercise, and of tho great Importance of right teaching to children. Dec. Mnlr, superin tendent of railroad work In Pennsyl vania, gave us u very sweet, tender and loving talk on her department, which lies very near her heart, having been superintendent fourteen years. She plead ed for work for tho brave, self-sacrl. flclng men, who servo us so continually. She also spoke of tho lnlluence the W. C. T. U. has upon ourselves. Those who attend tho conventions roallzo the uplift mentally, morally and spiritually they receive thoie. There Is also a feeling of unity lngendercd throughout our mem bership all over tho world. April 27, Mrs. E. S Stephens, state sup erintendent of mothers' meetings, nd dressed a city union meeting on tho subject of "Child Training." She said not only the elder children In the home but tho relatives, friends and teachers are engaged In the child's training. A baby of two weeks of age Is not too young to bo trained. Mothers also need training. They should learn to govern themselves, and should always tell their children tho absoluto truth. April 20 wo had the presenco at our meeting of Mr. Wells, of Chicago, Revs. Hogan. Bird, Guy, Weaver and Williams. They wero present In the city, attending a confer ence of Christian workers, and favored us with addresses and prohibition songs. May 11 Miss Decker, of tho National Florenco Crittenden mission, gavo us an interesting address on that subject. AX INNOVATION. At tho meeting of June 22 thero was quite nn Innovation. Dr. Ware, our land lord, had those present served with Ice cream In honor of his now baby. We havo fourteen departments of work, as follows: Scientific temperance Instruc tion, Sabbath observanco nnd Sunday school, evangelistic, mothers' meetings, juvenile, literature, railroad, llower mis sion, parlor meetings, press, sacramental wine, health and heredity and franchtso and civil government. Quito a largo number of letters have been written by different members at different times, to our congressmen and senators, urging tho passuge of various reform bills be fore those bodies. Wilbur F. Crofts said that only by a very blizzard of letters could there bo hopes of theso bills car rying. Other Hems of Interest will bo heard In tho treasurer's nnd correspond, lng secretary's reports. The report of the treasurer, Mrs. E. M". Tewksbury, showed receipts nnd disbursements of $272.90 and $187.70, re spectively during tho year. It was a coincidence that tho annual meeting was held on tho flfty-elghtli birthday of that widely-known mother of tho temperance cause, Frances K, Wlllard, L. L. D., president of tho World'B and Nntlonat Woman's Chris tian Temperance unions. She was born In Churchvtlle, N. Y. She was graduated from the Northwestern uni versity, nnd took tho degree of A. M. from Syracuse university. A few years wero spent In teaching, and then fol lowed over two years of travel through Europe, Egypt nnd Palestine. When the Crusnde of 1873 aroused the women of the country to the evil of the drink traffic, Miss Wlllard resolved to give herself to the uplifting of humanity. Ono morning the mall brought her two letters, one offering her the prlnclpal shlp of n young ladles' school at $2, 400 a year; tho other asking her to be come the president of tho Chicago Wo man's Christian Temperance union at nothing a year. She unhesltntlngly nc cepted tho lntter nnd has been work ing with pen, voice and brain from that time until now. In 1879 Miss Wlllard was elected to the presidency of tho National Wo man's Chrlstlnn Temperance union, nnd In 1S88 to that of tho World's union. Miss Wlllard and Lady Henry Some- H will bo the guests uf. honor at tho Dominion Woman's Chrlstlnn Temperance union, In Toronto, on Oct. 20. On Oct. 23 they will havo charge of the World's convention, and In Buf falo on Oct. 29 Miss Wlllard will guide tho deliberations of tho National Wo man's Christian Temperance union. The Incarceration of King was due to the fact that he could not pay a Judgment of $44.20, obtained against him before Alderman Wright In an ac tion in trespass brought against him by J. W. Guernsey. On Aug. C- Judg ment In the case was rendered and on Aug-. 11 King paid tho costs and said he would take an appeal. A trans cript wns made out, but ho never called for It nnd hence the appeal was never entered In the prothonotary's oillce. Sept. 20 was the last day for taking nn nppeal and a week later the exe cution In trespass against King was Issued. On that writ he was Incarcer ated.
