A GRAND JUROR Anil tho tlrnnil .Jury Itosonts Iho In dignity by Jumping on Tipstaves In Ociicrnl mid All tlio Othci Mental Attaches of tho Court lIouso--l)U-trlot Attorney Jones Receives nNlco Compliment tor Ills Courtesy mid Attontivcncss. Tho elevator man, the Janitor nnd tho tipstaves at the court houso received a dressing down at the hands of the grand Jury in its final report yester day morning. While tho report was being read the aforesaid were called before court and directed to ll3ten to what was said. Tho report was as fol lows: To tho Honorablo tho Judges of Lacka wanna County. Tho Brand Inquest Jnqulrins In and for paid Lackawanna county respectfully beg leavo to report us follows, to wit: Our slnccro thunks aro duo to District Attorney John It. Jones, for his uniform courtesy and his faithful attention to nil matters that carao beforo us, having dis posed of nearly 0110 thousand cases In thirteen days, glvlnf? every prosecutor who nppcaied a fair and Impartial hear ing. Wo consider him un ablo and worthy public ofllctal. Wo have visited tho county buildings and report as follows: Wo llnd tho coun ty jail to bo well kept, neat and clean, and tho food to bo of good quality. First Wo recommend tho gutter In tho yard near tho building to bo repaved at once. Second That somo posts bo sot In the ynrd to hold tho clothes lines. Third A fcwlng machine Is badly needed. Fourth That closets or shelves bo placed In the clothes room, there being no sultablo place to keep clean clothes. At tho court houso we recommend and strongly urgo that a heavy covering bo placed on tho floor of tho grand jury room to deaden tho sound. Also easy chairs, as those now there nio simply outrageous. Thero should bo an electric bell from tho grand jury room to tho district at torney's olllco; also leo water tanks, combs, brushes, mirrors nnd towels In all jury rooms. Thero should bo better scrvlco of the elevator, and more courteous treatment to those wishing to uso It. Wo also recommend that tho driveway In tho basement be paved. Wo find tho building dirty nnd badly cared for, especially tho arbitration room, halls and windows, und would recom mend better janitor service. We wish to call your nttcntlon to the rough nnd ungentlemanly manner In which tho tipstaves servo tho public dur ing court. As an example, ono of our grand Jurors during the week was sud denly nnd roughly grabbed and nearly thrown down tlio stnlrs by ono of these public servants. Wo denounce tho practlco of many al dermen and justices of the peace of tho county In Bending many trivial cases to court without any evidence to sustain them, and dono merely for the costs that follow. Respectfully submitted, Georgo A. Summers, Foreman. Scranton, Fa., Sept. 2S, 1S97. The ltnal report of cases contained 424 ignored bills and 46 true bills. This makes a total of 243 true and 034 Ignored bills which tho Jury has passed upon. About 1,000 transcripts In all were dealt with, but as far as tho rules of pro cedure would admit, District Attorney Jones consolidated cases and thereby reduced the number of bills returned.
