We experience some difficulty in giving a reliable quotation. The gold bill, by pro hibiting public sales of gold at the stock and gold ex changes, rendeisit an easy matter for brokers to give fictitious quotations of the price of gold. When sales are made publicly, the persons present can judge whether they are bbna fde or fictitious; whoreas, at present, a sale of $5 in a private office can be made the. basis for any quotation interested parties may desire to give currency to. Publicity is . one of the greatest s&fe guards against fraud and deception. While we have not favored gold legislation, we believe that Congress honestly thought that there were good reasons Tor the passage of .the gold bill, and we therefore trust thatit - ! will not be frightened by the demand of.any committee or committees into any concession from what it con ceives to be its full duty in the premises. There ia no doubt but that the gold bill was inteaded-as a benefit. If necessary, let it be so modified us to insure that result, but concede nothing more; at least not until tlie bill shall have'bccnfairiy.tricd, and its merits and demerits have become self-evident, „ f Drexel & Go. quote Government securities, &c., as follows; New-United States Bonds, 18S1 .........112 ®m« New Certtacates of Indebtedness S6K® New United Ste«eji7S-10 N0te5..,..J[187 Quartermasters Voncbers....9|' # .?» Orders for.
