THE CITY. Petroleum.— The trade in Potro- Icum 6ince its inauguration^few months ago, has as sumed roost mammoth dimensions. The produce at the Stella, as every one lacnvs, has become enormous; ami frtiipmentfi to Philadelphia by way of Tittahurg and tho Pennsylvania Railroad, as well as to Now York l»y other routes, have been exceedingly largo. This immense sup ply, and excess of production over consumption, lias, of course, caused a steady depreciation in its price, and tl»£ re-ftuM Article, which before brought 85 14 70 AAfttS, Is now freely offered at fiom 25 to ‘lO cents. The crude article has also declined about twenty cents V gallon. A sate of S,OCO barrels was made hero a few days ago at about ten cents IP giillan. As the package costa $1.50, or five cc«M & gnlton, «nd the erada wttoto U selling la Pittsburg For 5 cents, while the cost of transportation is 3# cents & gallon more, the intelligent calculator can ascertain that there will be hat little profit left for the producer or original shipper. The total exportations of the Article from the [Jailed Stales this year have reached 2,400,000, valued at $700,- 000, of which full one-fourth has boon gout from Phila delphia. The exports from this port in January were 254,005 gallons, in February 3,066 gallons, and in March SC9,OD-l SdllAlSl A sroftll iniantiiy oi 1 this went to tlio West ladier. and the remainder to Loudon —two entire chip loads having left for the latter piuco. A siuglc firm in this city, sir.ee the commencement of the trade, has despatched four ship loudt to London, and sundry other transient lots, in all 33,509 barrels and 209 cases. The coastwise trade in the article has also grown at a corre sponding rapid rate. Messrs. Twells & Co., finding that the business- had assunud such vast dimensions, placed ftlißeef patfiils flirwt Iwtwwn this pert «t*4 ana gent 0.000 barrels during the last four weeks. If a cargo of this volatile matter should unfortunately take fire at sea, or at our v;buj ves, we would have a confla gration in good earnest. Wliej latd oil first mml? its fwWMK*, many years since. the savans of the trade prophesied that sperm and whale oil. in a. short time, would be comparatively worthless. Ti.e fully of tnch a prediction is now ap parent, as lue manufacture ami consumption of lard oil basbecomeeeormoua; yet to-day crude and refiued wlmle oil and winter sperm oil cr.mnmod a higher price thau when the fu.-t lan!-oil lamp made its appearance. A Niw Army Hospital to be BUILT IN V EST PHILADELPHIA.—A large liob piul, tftpaUA of A££6W!UMiiithis a HistuAud fatUnta, is about to bp trectedin Wesl Philadelphia, ou the south side oi Mill creek, between the Baltimore turnpike and Spruce street. T 1 ose rfjoining ilieir regiments can also proceed dtrtcilj to the For ly The plans of the building bavins been approved by the hee<3a oi dfpßriment, tbe work -will be at once begun, and thn uholu ftirimgnimsiit will bo complotod within six weeks. The plan ia a novel one. Twenty one- story lantern roofed, wooden buildings will he arranged in four groups of five, and in the form of a parallelogram, four lmndi od and fifty feet by six hundred and fifty feet, about a cen tral building, used for cilices, doctors’ quarters, Ac. Grass plots lift) feet wide will separate the groups, and plots twenty-five fett wide the individual sheds} yet, by means of two pavilion-like corridors and the central building, there vt ill be covered connection between them ali. Each ward will he 150 feet long, 25 feet wide, and 14 IWi .anti vi Hi co&iaiu £0 Lods. and rooms for nnrsas, baUtSr and water-c!o?ris. The wards will have windows on both sides, one between every two beds, and, as the buildings will run north ami south, there will be no greater exposure to sun on one side than on the other. *1 he corridors will be used as dining-halls. One ward ? that on the eouthwest. win be vised as a kitchen and ißundry. Four l»u!lQir<gs,for stewards, store-rooms, &c , will be placed at the four ends of the tw o corridors. This hospital will ha ready very soon, as Governor Curtin has made arrangements to have the Pennsylvania fiotditifl, who nitty he vroumtad ttt Yorktownj brought litre. It would not be amiss to state in this connection, that donations of musical in&truments would be acceptable at Broad-street Hospital. There are many flue musicians there, bat an at corf eon is the only nnmilitary Instru ment tlity now confess. There are eEOugh performers these, mi fit ring with maimed feet and legs, but with bends in gcod order, to make a fine band. Moreover, the music would he a great solace to the other patients. The other hospitals should he removed from the city aa hot wtatlier is coming on, and wo may surmise the effect of oloiios imdredi of sick soldiers in hot, pent*up city bnildings. The First Ward Explosion.—An other of the victims of the explosion at Jackson’s cartridge factory) Mies Ellen Lynch) died on Sunday evening, at the reniiHiivania Ho*piittl. She was eigh teen years o! age, and rtpidwl with her mother, at No. 817 Leonard street, Eighth street, below Wharton. Her funeral will take pltice this morning, at half past eight o’clock. The little daughter of Mrs. Yeager, injured by the explosion, has Fully tuuovored. She was not tainted physically. Her nerves were somewhat shocked, but Bbe is able to be about, as though nothing had happened to her. The lad Yeatrcr was not as much injured as at first suprosed. The liberal manner iu which the people responded to the appeal of Mrs Yeager Is commenda ble . A anioimi of money, any quantity of clothing, and a bountiful supply of the neces saries and luxuries, were most cheerfully given her. The following lias been received from Fire Marshal Blackburn, to whom were handed certain moneys, contri buted for the benefit of the sufferers: ’♦ Rtrctivt-u from tho proprietors of the Evening Bul letin tbe sum of two hundred and seventy-six dollars and forty-eight cent?, in instalments, being tbe entire amount subscribed ihrough the medium of that paper to the fund for tbe relie; ot tbe sufferers by the explosion of tbe cartridge factory of Mr. Samuel Jackson, in the First ward, 3!ucii2tfili,lEEl. ‘♦A. It is due to the beuevolent persons who contributed to the fund, to the objects of their contributions, and to File Marthal Blackburn, to state that the last-named gentlemau has dhtributnl the greater part of the money placed in his hai da anions the persona for whom it was intended. Tbs worthy have been carefully sought out and their wants supplied. Much immediate and pressing suffering has been relieved, and proper caution has been exercised by him to prevent imposition. Mr. Blackburn JiAs performed the d Hcaie dii-y Asfiigiied him with his usual icdustrj and tact, and although it would be impro per to make pnblic all the details of. tile manner in which the money bas been distributed, he Will render an account of his stewardship at some future period. The California Eegdient.—Tcs terday afternoon the returned prisoner of the Calift rnia Regiment met at Spring Garden Hall for the purpose ot electing two captains aud a lieutenant. The meeting was organized by Captain Keffer. The men were separated cd either eida of the room, those on the west being ex changed men and the others on parole. It was stated by Captain Kefftr that each man should approach the desk and vote for one of the three nonii teeß, and the gentleman having the highest vote would L@ considered elected captain of the First Company, the ufht highest wtf captain of the Second Company* and the lowest wonid be a lieutenant in whichever compauy he might prefer. Ee vital of Business.—Tlie Spring demand for goods has somewhat increased during the past ten days, and a number of buyers from the interior or this State and the West have been here purchasing their supplies. They opt rate, however, with-the greatest pre caution, and the jobbers, particularly those in th 9 dry goods business, manif-et an indifference about selling ex cept for cash or its equivalent. Thedietru3t which always characterizes the fttling in mercantile circles (luring pe riods of domestic dissensions and rebellion, Is now appa rent Everywhere, «ml there is but little disposition mani fested to enter into any new enterprise involving any large amount of capital. The canals of this State are now in good workirg order, but the receipts of flour, wheat, and corn are generally smaller than anticipated, and the commission merchants, including many members of the Cora Excljhii§p, have been disappointed in the ImsinoManiicipated from tbe.=o ronfes. They argue that canals are old-fogy institutions, landmarks of ancient times, having been transplanted almost entirely by our -numerous railroads which have branched throughout nearly all the great agricnlturat a a d mining <KatriC«B, Although ibo revival <>f business is slow, yet it is sure, and will altogether depend upon the progress of our troops iu the field. Obtaining Goons Under False PRETENCES A day or two since a young woman named Bose Haim mgs was arrested by Lieut. Paulin upon tbe charge of obtaining goods under false pretcncss. Her plan of operation is to malts a small gitfchasa At a confectionery or grocei y store, and then leave an order for more articles, to be aent to her residence, which has generally been located either on Chestnut or Walnut street, in the ueigliborbxd of Sixteenth. It is almost needless to state that no such person resided at the places indicated. When arre?tul she pleaded poverty as an ex cuse for her course, and told Buch a pitiable tale that even the police took compassion on her aud were disposed to release her at first, but subsequently discovered some more of her doings. Tho woman is represented as being very smart, and ovau uaul n& a tool an ortker who ac companied her to a house up town, which she repre sented as her residence. She had formerly lived at the place, and was indebted for board She made herself perfectly at Lome, and told the landlady that she need not worry herself about the money, that it would be paid, and that the temltn uii u ilk her (the policeman) was Lee brother-in-law!
