CITY ITEMS. Interesting Sunday School Anniversary. »Tin: 11I.V. T HEWITT TAI.MAGE ESTERS UPON HIS PAST JU- fcIUP or Till* SECOND REFORMED DUTCH CIIURCII. ’ The Tenth anniversary of the attached to the Second Ueiormed Butch Olinrch, Seventh street, above Browu, was lield in that edifice on Sunday after noon, in the presence ef an overflowing congregation. From the immense gatherings which these anuual occa sions have usually attracted at this chnrch, it was deemed advisable in the present to seat the schools In the auditorium of the church before opening the street doors. In consequence cf this, there was a congregation collected on the sidewalk in front of the church, large enough to 'fill it. without the children, before the doors were opened, and when the latter swung back the rash to obtain seats or standing room was so great as to prevent hundreds from gaining fttfmiseivn at all. On the morning of that day, Mr. T. DeWitt Talmage, late of Syracuse, assumed, formally, the pastoral charge of this church. The church was then also well filled and the new pastor p eacfccd with marked acceptance Trom Jtrcmiah I, 0, 7. S; t« Theirisaidl, Ah* Lord Hod! jbet old. I cannot speak; fori am a child. But the Lord said unto me, Say not J am a child, for thou shalt go to nil that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command ■thee thou shall apeak. Be not afraid of their faces.” The anniversary exerciser in the afternoon* were conducted by Mr. Tahrmge. lbo children of the Main School having been assigned their places in the house, those of the Infant School were brought up from the room below, vhile the former greeted them by sim;iu‘ T An introductory lij nm, ontillyd, u The Children are Coming.'* After another h>mn, prayer was offered by the Rev. 3>r’. Fisher, after which, a hymn, *« The Better Land.'* •was sung by the Infant School. The singing, by both divisions of the school,'ivas ad mirable. some of the pieces being giveu iu a style that would have done credit to a company of cultivated vo ■Cfllists of riper years. ANNUAL ftfirOßT. The neat thing iu order was the reading of the annual ■report by the superintendent of the Main School, Mr. D. W.C.Mcore, from wl ich we learned that, numerically and •otherwise, the condition of these schools was never as flourishing as at present, iu ad their departments. The Main School now numbers 242 scholars, and the Infant, S6O, making an aggregate of 492—-the former being in charge of a superintendent, assistant superintendent, and cC teachers, and the latter by a superintendent, A. M. Spangler,) and a lady assistant. Five of the children have died during the year, and twenty four have been transferred from the lufant to tho Main echool. - The number of the latter, it was piid, would have been larger, bitf for the want Of teachers. Allusion was also made by Mr. Moore to the peculiar circumstances of their present anniversary, as constituting an appropriate part of the reception services extended to their new pastor. After the reading of the icport another lunin was sung by the Main School, on titled “ Infant Home, n wluchwas followed with an ADDRESS BY BEV. MB. TALMAGE. In the difficult field of addressing children effective Zy, this initial effoit of Mr Talmage, in Philadelphia, gAvo evidence of decided Sunday-school talent. HU re marks were sufficiently simple for the comprehension of the youngest, while the lessons impressed wore not 10-t tepon the moat matured. The cburch then, he B&id, was beautiful with cirililroa and flowers. The former were to him always interesting, as the latter were always beautiful, on all days and in all places. They were emblematic also of a great many things, anti be had thought while Listening to the report just read, that at the flowers which he Eaw around him that were to accompany the “ offerings,” had been beau* tifully ana ged in bouquets by interested hands, so the jLoid delighted to p'uck such little ones of earth, as tlio uuperiiitendcat hag ppoKen of in his report, And form Hum into beautiful bouquets, to adorn the mansions of Leaven. Ile referred feelingly to his separation from his former school in the city of Syracuse two weeks ago. He Lad known all its members by name, aud he hoped that ft would not be lodut before he would he equally well ac quainted with those aronnd him now. all of whom he in vited r lo stop him in the street whenever they met him and tell him their names, in case he failed to recognize them. He also related « number of anecdotes illustrative cf the utility of the Sabbath-school work ; the import ance of impressing lessons of benevolence early upon the minds cf children, and the encouragement which every teacher should feel in bis labors. Their efforts, he said, we fluently preduvtire of great results when least expected. At the close Of the address there was a beautiful hymn, very sweetly sung by.the children of the infant school, entitled “ We'll stand for the right,” concluding thu3: “ The tight it shall triumph o’er sea aud o’er laud, Upheld by our Fathers omnipotent hand; And the Flag of our Union forever shall be The tern rof traitors, the pride of the free.” THE “ OFFERINGS” Were next In order. "J hit, ftmlxire, introduced in mfs luonaiy anniversaries of this kind, of late years, is annually becoming more popular. By the “offerings,” In their substantial sense at least, are to be understood 4he contributions of the several classes or Ll bands,” io the missionary cans* during the past year. Accjmpv. Dying eachof these separate contributions, however, there was a beautiful bouquet, or basket of natural flowers, or £ome Qther fancy article, with a neat swd WRtftiniog the amount contributed, with some appropriate scriptural or Ipoetic motto, and the names of the donors, and the iadi vidual for w hom the article was intended. These “ offer ings” were brought up the aisles by the little representa tives appointed for tli&t purpose, and handed to My, Moore, the superintendent, who read the contents of the cards to the congregation. When the Main School was through with this part of the programme, the Infant School “Circles” presented their “offerings” in a similar way to the superintendent of that branch, Mr. A. s£. Spangler. Some of the iatter were very tasteful. Among the most beautiful of the ar ticles sent up, was an elegant basket of artificial flowers inscribed, “To the Bev. Hr. Berg, from the Infant School of the Second Reformed Butch Church.” A peasant way of remembering their late pastor. BIBLE PRESENTATION. An unexpected feature was here introduced iu the fchape of a Bible presentation, which was done on behalf cf th» parents Af the cnil/lran in ths Infant Schawl, bp ihe Bev. Hr. Fisher, to Mr. A. M. Spangler, as u token, of their appreciation of his services as superintendent. Hite presentation speech was made io excellent taste, and 9Rr.Spangler's remarks la receiving the beautiful gifs—a tnagiilficetitly-btiihd volume—*equally appropriate. Following this ceremony there was another hymn ; h collection (designaUd by Mr. Talmage to be the climax of interest,} and a closing hymn, called “The Golden Shore : or, Home Beyond the Tide.” The con gregation were dismissed with a benediction pronounced X>y Mr. Talmage. We may state, in conclusion, that the latter is to be installed as pastor of this church on Thurs day evening of the present week. [Burling ton and Salem (8, J.) papers please copy ] ** OBITUARY. Dikd—On Friday afternoon r «st, April 11th, after a lingering illness, which she bore with Christian forti tude and resignation, Mrs. SARAH • REED JJL AG HORN, wife of John W. Cjnghorn, £sq., of this city, aged 59 years. Never did the pen or friendship dwell upon a sadder dispensation of Divine Providence than the death of Mrs. Clagborn. We have no talent for panegyric. In her case, happily, it is not required. The inestima ble <iiiuHties which adorned her ni-'nd and heart will long survive in the memory of all who knew her, and speak her best eulogy. In her death her family have lost a devoted wife and mother, tho Church of Christ one of Its most consistent members, and society one of its brightest ornaments. In the humane lab orb of the Bible Society, the Union Benevolent Association, and the last eight or nine years ns one of the main pillars of the AVlAeru J/b/iit 1 for friendless Children, her name is honorably identified with deeds of most extensive usefulness. Of the latter institution she was one of the founders, and to the labt one of its most active ami efficient supporters. Iler feeling heai t over sympathized with misfortune, and her hand was ever open to afford relief. Possessing a mind highly cultivated, manners much refined, a sense of propriety very discriminating, and an unfeigned piety that beamed from every expression of her countenance, she moved in the circle of her friends with gracefulness and dienitv. She is gone from a world of sin and sor* row to a woild of purity and bliss, and now shines, without doubt, in the lustre of an immaculate spirit, before the Throne of God. Her good works were many, tut she tetter know the Truth than to rost her eternal hopes in them. By faith her soul was united to Christ, and ttrough Him she has attained unto eternal life. A7asf Loveliness and virtue, accomplishments and worth, alfoid no protection agaiust the shafts of dis ease or the encroachments of dissolution ! Were it so, Mrs. Claghorn would still be here, in the bloom of health, the delight of her family and friends. But it is not so. The scene of her mortal existence is closed. From the mid&i of atl that could att*ch her io earth—family and ii lends, esteem and love, enjoyments and usefulness—she is hurried to the tomb, leaving behiid her a bright ex ample, and a memory embalmed in affection, sincere and lasting. The TatmrrK of a Friend. In the recent death of our esteemed fcUow-citi7.cn, Mr. JOHN M. COLEMAN, not only a large circle of friends, but our city sustained a loss rot easily to be repaired. I knew the deceased intimately for years, and in paying this tribute to his memory am conscious that it will meet n mponse in the heaita of all who know him. In public stations, no less than in the private walks of life, his many virtues won for him profound respect, whilst In the domestic circle ho was loved and clurished as an exemplary husband, fatlrcr, and friend. Though a man of decided purpose and unflagging energy, aud for many yean actively engaged in mercantile and official life, hifi uniform kindness aid urbanity made for him troops of friends in every position lie occupied, and it may be said that few men have ever departed this life more universally respected by all who know them than John M.
