The pro. grass of the surveys has been 00-extensivwwith the appropriation made by Congress for that pur pose. Among other information which the report affords is the following : In California, locations are .sought for by the grape-grower, the sheep raiser, the lumberman, hitherto deemed worthless, hut now found to•be most valuable; the agriohltn riot ploughs not only the valleys, but to the very mountain tops, obtaining a fine yield of cereals, sufficient not only to supply the State of Califor nia, but furnishing a large surplus for exportation. FATAL Ar7IAT AT VAN BUREN, AREANaas, —On the 13th het we learn from the Memphis Avalanche, a fatal affray took place at Van Buren, Axhansm, in which three men, named Rufus and Jackson Covington, and Richard, a son of tho let ter, were killed by two brothers, named Biles and Hen Edwards, and others badly out. The diffi culty arose out of an old fend whtoh existed be tween the parties. The Edwards' attempted to *Nape, but were arrested and lodged in jail.
