D. J. Mo. FANO! NOTIONS, [Per The Press J The recent legislation at Harrisburg, in favor of raising the eateries of our judges, has met with the almost unanimous approval of the Philadal• phia Bar, and it is sincerely desired by every man mho can appreciate the labors of these gentlemen, thdt they Shall be bettor paid, and that the bill increasing their eateries shall speedily pass. But an omnibus hill, containing one oration of a wholly different and most reprehensible charac ter, was road in place on Friday kat, which, should it pass, would repeal the sixteenth section of the not of Assembly of the 24th January, 1849, which reads as follows : " It shall not be lawful for the judges of the several courts of this Com monwealth, or any one of said judges, to appoint as auditor, master in chancery, examiner, com missioner, or appraiser, any parson related or con anted with said judges, or any ono er more of thhm, by ties of . consanguinity or marriage." I quote now from Pardon's Digest, Stroud At Bright ly's edition of 1856, page 88, under the bead "Au' (Mors." I trust that none of the judges whnse claims on the Legislature have been so freely and so libe rally responded to by this bar, have had anythin todo with this attempt to struggle through a piece of such unjust legislation. There are rumors of pstoritinth and other practices sufficiently preys, lint to induce some of these gentlemen to tie Caittious heir they act in this as well as in other 11:letters; and should this attempt prove successful in the Legislature, 1 trust that Governor Packer mil fulfil the promise made in his inaugural, to veto all bills which do not clearly express their intention, and that he will see that a bill ostensi bly to open Delaware avenue does not give the power to revive judicial nepotism, and Inflict per manent injuries on the pure administration of justice. Nut what I have done I will tell you. I have tome days taken out from $5 to $lO with a rocker; but it is hard work, fcr there is not Water to work with. In the spring I hope to do better than now. Not more than one-third of the people are working in the mines, the rest are building hotms in the different towns that have been laid out here. There are 2,000 persons in this valley. I hear that many are detained at the crossing of the South Platte on ac count of the snow, and that the snow Is very heavy In that direction. Provisions are very high and sasrce. Times, Feb 23.] The first toiler, or paying clerk, of the Atlan tic, Bank, Brooklyn, not making his appearance at his desk at the aoouetomed hour, suspicions were excited that there must be something wrong In his accounts. It was found that he left his home is Elaukett street, where he kept house, at his customary hour, that be took leave of his family in the usual manner, but had not since been seen. On examining his last account a deficiency of about ten thou and dollars was discovered, the greater part of which consisted of bills of the bank. As there does not appear to have been anything wrong in his accounts up to the day of his absconding, it is supposed that he has taken the greater part of the money with him. The bank has securities to the amount of $lO,OOO, so that it will not lose much, if anything, by the de falcation. The name of the absconding teller is Oscar A. Field. He is a native of New Jersey, about thirty-five years of age, and has a wife and two ohildrea. He had heels in the bank about six years, and, we understand, had always been perfectly exemplary In his conduct. Ax Airwoman Ftx.—The Brookville (Pa.)
