1 E Ojminig gdroqalr. IlMRt A. Parsons, Jr., . . F.ililor. THURSDAY. ATRIL 18, 1872, REPUBLICAN STATE TICKET. FOR governor: Mnj. Gen. JOHN F. HARTRANFT, Montgomery County. FOR SUPREME JUDGE: . Hon. ULYSSES MERCUR, Bradford Count;. FOR AUDITOR GENERAL! Brig. Gen. HARRISON ALLEN, Warren County. CONGRESSMEN AT LARGE: General LEMUEL TODD, Cumberland County. General HARRY WHITE, Indiana County. Tub Republican State Convention met in Harribburg on the 10th inst , and placed in nomination the men whose names appear at the head of . b i . co'umn. We will refer more fully tc the candidates hereof tet. C0N3BESS. As the Governor has failed to sign the new apportionment bill the members of the next Congress will be elected from the old district, with the addition of two Congressmen for the State ai large. Jcdge Scofield who has so ably repre sented the district during the last decade has signified his irrevocable detcrmina tion to retire from Congressional life ai the end of the present Congress. We regret this exceedingly, ns no living man could have represented the district more to the satisfaction of the people, or guarded its varied interest better. He occupies to-day the pioud pssitiot. of being the recognized leader of the Pennsylvania delegation iu the House; and still higher honors await bim. Then it will devolve upon the Repub licans of the district to select a man to be elected next October to fill the place. We should put forward our best man. It may be early to name a candidate, bin it seems to us not entirely inopportune to express preferences, in order to fnllj bring out the views of the party before the time arrives to make nominations We have been looking over the district, and while we have in our ranks man) competent and able gentlemen, we ai present are unable to name any gentle man who is as worthy in all respects to fill the position as Col C. 13. Curtis ot Erie. Ha is a gentleman of genial manners, of large experience as a legis lator, both State-end National. As a lawyer he stands among the first in the State. Asa Republican politician, his record is consistent, having betn one of the first to discover thai the country de manded an organization such as the Re publican party, based upon principles ol eternal justice aud equality, he aided iu its formation, and has been a saga cious and efficient worker in its ranks ever since. At great peo aniury sacrifice, ho abandoned a lucrative practice, and volunteered to defend his county iu the hour of her greatest peril. He con tinued in active service until bis health absolutely failed him. We don't know that ho is a candidate or that he would consent to be, but think as he heeded . his country's call when she needed the aid of all her patriotie sons, he could not now refuse to aocept this position of honor and trust. He has hosts of friends in this end of the district 4958 4958 4961 4961 4990 4993 4104 4103 4105 4100 4107 4103 4115 4109 4116 4403 4403 4110 4111 4111 4111 4996 4096 4900 4-07 4108 4101 4404 4404 4400 4400 4407 4408 4070 49G1 2357 4878 4879 4944 4945 4880 2374 2303 2377 4905 4877 4881 F YOU WANT TO BUY GOODS CHEAP GO TO THAYER & IIAGERTY MalD Street, Ridgway, Pa.
