The celebrated author, in this admirable essay, clearly demonstrates from a thirty years successful practice, that the alarming consequences of such errors and abases may be radically cured without the danger ous use of internal medicine or the appli cation of the knife; pointing out a mode of cure at once simple, certain, and effectual, by means of which every sufferer, no matter what his condition may be. may cure him self cheaply, privately, and radically. It is one of the most remarkable foots of this remark'able age, not that to many persons are the victims of dyspepsia or in digestion, but its willing victims. Now, we would not be understood to say that any one regards dyspepsia with favor, or feels disposed to rank it among the luxuries of life. Far from it. Those who have ex perienced its torments would scout such an idea. All dread it, and wonld gladly dis pense with its unpleasant familiarities. Mark Taplcy, who was Jolly under all the trying oirourastances in which he was placed, never had an attack of dyspepsia, or his jolity would have speedily forsaken him. Of all the multifarious diseases to which the human system is liable, there is perhaps no one so generally prevalent as dyspepsia. There are diseises more aoute and painful, and which more frequently, prove fatal, but none the effects of which are so depressing to the mind and so positively distressing to the bod. If there is a wretohed being in the world it is A CONFIRMED DYSPEPTIC. We have said that dyspepsia is perhaps the most universal of human diseases, This is imphatically the case in the United States. Whether this general prevalence is due to the character of'the'food the method of 'its preparation, or the hasty manner in which it is usually swallowed, is not our province to explain. The great font with which we are called to deal is this: DYSPEPSIA PREVAILS almost univei sally. Nearly every other person you meet is a victim, an apparently wining one: were this.not the case, why so many sufferers, when a certain, speedy and safe remedy is within the easy reach of all who will avail themselves of it? But says a dys peptic: What is this remedy? to which we rpply: This great allevator of human suffering is almost as widely known as the English language. It has allayed the agoDies of thousands, and is to day carry comfort and encouragement to thousands of others.' This acknowledged panacea is noue other than Dr. HOOFLANDS GERMAN BITTERS Would you know more of the merits of this wonderful prepaiation than can be learned from the experience of others? Try it yourself, and when it has failed to fulfil the assurance of its efficacy given by the proprietor, then abandon faith in it. LET IT BE REMEMBERED, first of all, that HOOFLAND'S GERMAN BITTERS is -o arum beverage. They nre composed wholly of the pure juice or vital principle of roots. This is not a mere assertion The extracts from which they are compounded are prepared by one of the ablest of German chemists. Their effects can be beneficial only in all cased of the billiary system. IlooH.ind's German Bitters stand without, an equal, acting promptly and vigorously upon the liver; they remove its torpidity anl cause health ful secretion of bile thereby supplying the stomach with t tie most indispensable elements of sound digestion in proper pro portions. They purify the blood, cleansing the vital fluid of all hurtful impurities and su plantitig them with the elements of genuine healihfulness. Now, there are certain clas-tes ot per sons to whom extreme Bitters are not only unpalatable, but who find it impossible to take them without positive discomfort. For such Dr. HOOFLAND'S GERMAN TONIC has been specially prepared. It is intended tor use where a slight alcoholic- stimulant is require! in connection with the well known Tonic properties of the pure Ger man Bitters. HOOFLAND'S TONIC acts with almost marvelous effect. It not only stimulates the flagging and wasting energies, but invigorates and permanently strengthens its action upon the Liver and Stomach thorough, perhaps less prompt than the Bitters, when tne same quantity is taken is none the less certain. Indigestion, Billiousness, Physioal or Ner vous prostration, yield readily to its po tent influence. It gives the iuvalid a new and stronger hold upnu life, removes de pression of spirit, and inspires cheerful ness. But Dr. Hoofland's benefactions to the human race are not confined to his celebrated GERMAN BITTERS, or his invaluable Tonic. He has prepared an other medicine, which is rapidly winning its way to popular favor because of its in trinsic metits. This i HOOFLAND'S PODOi'H YLLIN PILLS, a perfect substi tute for mercury without any of mercury'sl evil qualities. 1 These wonderful Pills, which are Intend ed to act upon the Liver, are mainly com posed of Podophyllin, or the vital princi ple of the mandrake root. It is the medi cinal virtues of this health-giving plant, in perfectly pure ana highly concentrated form. The Podophyllin acts directly on the Liver, stimulating its functiins and causing it to make its billiary secretions in regular and prope quantities. The inju rious results which invariably follow the use of mercury is entirely avoided by their use. lint it is not upon the Liver only that their powers are exerted. The extract of Mandrake contained in them is skillfully combined with four other ex tracts, one of which acts upon tha stomach, one upon the upper bowels, one upon the lo.ver boweli. and prevents any griping effect, thus producing a pill that influences the entire digestive and alimen'ary system, in an equal and harmonious manner, and its action entirely tree from nausea, vomit ing or griping pains common to all other purgatives. Possessing 'hese much desirable qualities the Podophyllin becomes invaluable as a FAMILY MEDICINE. No household should be without tbem. They are perfectly safe, require but two for an ordinary dose, are prompt and effi cient in aotion, and when used in connec tion with Dr. Hoofland's German Bitters, or Tonic, may be regarded as certain spe cifics in all cases of Liver Complaint, Dys pepsia, or any of the disorders to which the system is ordidarly subject. . The PODOPHYLLIN PILLS act upon the stoniaoh and b jwels, carrying off improper obstructions, while the Bitters or Tonio purify the blood, strengthen and invigorate the frime, give tone and appe tite to the stomach, and thus build up the invalid anew. Dr. Hoofland, having provided internal remedies for disease, has given the world one mainly for external application, in the wonderful preparation known as Da. HOOFLAND'S GREEK OIL. This Oil is a sovereign remedy for pains and aches of all kinds. Rheumatism, Neuralgia, Toothaohe, Chiltlains, Sprains, Burns, Pain in the Back and Loins, Ringworms, etc., etc., all yield to its external application. . Taken internally, it is a cure for Heart burns, Kidney Diseases, Sick Headaches, Colio, Dysentery, Cholera Morbus, Cramps, rains in the Btoniach, uotas, Asthma, etc. These remedies will be sent by express to any looality, upon application to the PRINCIPAL OFFICE, at the GERMAN MEDICINE STORE, No. 631 ARCH ST., PHILADELPHIA CHAS. A dressing which ia at once agreeable, healthy, and effectual f o r preserving the hair. It $oon restores faded or gray hair to itt original color, with the gloss and freshness of youth. Thin hair is thickened, falling hair checked, and baldness often, though not always, cured by its use. Nothing can restore the hair where the follicles are de stroyed, or the glands atrophied and decayed; but such as remain can be saved by this application, and stimu lated into activity, so that a new growth of hair is produced. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from turning gray or falling off, and consequently prevent baldness. The restoration of vitality it gives to the scalp arrests and prevents the forma tion of dandruff, which is often so un cleanly and offensive. Free from those deleterious substances which make some preparations dangerous and inju rious to tho hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it If wanted merely for a HAIR DRESSING, nothing else can be found so desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts long on the hair, giving it a rich, gloBsy lustre, and a grateful perfume. Prepared by Dr. J. C. Every year increases the popu larity of this valuable Hair Prep aration, which is due to merit alone. We can assure our old patrons that it is kept fully up to its high standard ; and it is the on ly reliable and perfected prepara tion for restoring Gray or Faded Hair to its youthful color, making it soft, lustrous, and silken. The scalp, bv its use, becomes white and clean. It removes all eruptions and dandrufij and, by its tonio proper ties, prevents the hair from falling out, as it stimulates and nourishes the hair-glands. By its use, the hair grows thicker and stronger. In baldness, it restores the capillary glands to their normal vigor, and will create a new growth, except in extreme old age. It is the most economical Hair-Dressing ever used, as it requires fewer applica tions, and gives the hair a splendid, glossy appearance. A. A.
