From the etatoment of the prosecu trix, it appears that the defendants entered her cabin, on the Ch&rliers Road, a few miles from the oity, and without provocation, made a vio lent attack upon her. Connolly was armed with a pistol and an axe. With the former weapon he struck her over tho arm three or four times severely, and when she attempted to defend herself, beat her with the broad side of the axe. He at last attempted to strike her with tho sharp edge of Ihe axe, but fortuuately she avoided the blow, and thus saved her life. All the time he was beating the woman, tho fe males who acoompanied him, urged aod assis ted him. Mrs. Conoolly escaped from the baud and subsequently had'the whole party arrested, and brought before ‘Squire M’Kcnna, who after an examination, sentenoed them all to jail. Catharine Nee afterwards procured bail, and was released. The others are still in confine ment. Peaches and Plums in Market.— This city is now supplied in the greatest profusion with all tbe various kinds of fruits suitable to the season. Peaohea were so abundant in the Dia mond market, yesterday afternoon, that thty oonld be purchased for twenty-five cents per peok. Large fioo green and yellow Gage plums were selliog at four and five cents per quart. Plenty of the smalt blue plums were sold at two and three cents per quart, and the supply of this fruit seemed to bo so extensive that proba bly it was disposed of even lower in large quan tities. Of vegetables, the market was overflow ing, and selliog at moderate prioes. The only article that appears to maintain a high price is batter, which, notwithstanding the plentifulncßs o'f good pasturage and feed, sells for twenty-five and .thirty cents per pound. Everythiog else, however, is so cheap, that there is no cause for grumbling on this aocount. The Complaint Book, which was so loudly called for, and whioh it was supposed would work a complete reformation in our municipal government, eeomß cither to have affected its purpose, or to have been entirely forgotten by our citizens, as it has fallen into disuse. Tho last oomplaiot registered on its pages was one against the loafers who congregate at tbe Post Office and Custom House, whom the author is very desirous lo have removed There* are cer tainly other nnisanoes to be complained of, and as the police have nothing to do, now is the time to give notification, and have them abated. Accident.— A young man named Irwin was thrown out of a boggy, near Manchester, on Thursday evening, and seriously injured. Ilis arm and a couple of ribs were broken. He was in company with another young man at tbe time, both being intoxicated. The horse became frightened at a looomotive on the Ohio and Penn sylvania Railroad, and neither being ablo to restrain him, ran off. dragging the buggy over a large stone, which threw Irwin out. The other person kept his seat and was not injured. COKTICT FROM WESTMORELAND —John Weloh, Esq., BherifT of Westmoreland county, arrived in the city yesterday, having in charge a man named Henvy Krontwater, lately convicted at Greensburg, of larseny, and-sentonced to three years’ imprisonment in the Weetern Peniten tiary. The canal was filled with boats loadcned with all kinds of produce for our markots, and tho throng of purchasers was dense tho whole afternoon. Those persons who contend that the canal basins are of no use, should visit them on Buob days as yesterday, and they would probably change their opinion. Fire.— Tho alarm of fire about 12 o’clock on Thursday night, was oaaeed by the burning of £ two Btory frame bouse, situated oo Penn street, opp»;*Uo USI outer depot of the Pennsylvania Railroad Ward. The building was occu pied by a named M’Cabe, and owned by J. T. HutchineoC* Tee canae of the fire is not known. Scarcitt of Paving Stones —Tho high wat ers daring tho whole of the summer, haß pre vented the usual amount of paving stones being taken from the river bods, and great difficulty is experienced ’by coatraotors ia procuring a sup ply. Last summer tho unusual low water made this a profitable business. Capsized.—Oa Thursday aftemooo, the sail boat “ Fanny Wheeler” capsized in the Alio gheny river, below the Federal street bridge. Five yonng men who were in it at the time, nar rowly .escaped with their lives. Three of them clang to the boat until they were rescued, and the other two swam to the shore. Thebe were 1G commitments to the county jail yesterday for drunkenness and vagrancy; of this number, ten came from Mayor Volz's office. The city being eutirely destitute of burglars, pickpockets, thieves, &0., the police to keep their hands in, are looking up the vagrants. Bobber?. —The house of Mr. Thomas Miller, on Second street, was entered by some fellow on Thursday evening, aboat eight o’olook, while the family were absent, and thoroughly ran sacked. The only articles taken were a few pieoes of clothing, and a couple of plum pics. Another Wife Beater.— Adam Naylor was committed to jail, yesterday, by Mayor Adamp, for beating bis wife. The weather la warm and cloudy, with every prospect of more rain. All the boats leaving are full of La-Htarn goods, and from the amount arriving dally by the Central Pennsylva nia Railroad, there Is no donbt all the steamboats will have p’enty of bueinees. The flue steamer “ Yorktown,” CapL Thos. Poe, has don® a large business in the passenger line; from August Ist, ls&4 to August 1 at, 1855, running time eight months, she carried 1,634 deck and 1,809 cabin passengers—total 3,343. Tae steamer “Silver Wave,” Captain John 8. McMUlcn, will leave thi3 evening for Bt. Louis. Those who w:rb to make a pleasant trip to the Mound City siioold not f«il to cull on Iniard. The testimony in the case is Very contlkUng, a great number of witnesse? contradicting each other. It seems to be proved that the “ Toiegraph " gave two whistled and ran accordingly towards the Indiana shore. The pilot of the “ Kentucky Homo " appears to have heard but one whistle and ran towards the same shore, thus rendering a collieioil unavoidable. The Inspectors think the pilot of the “Kentucky Home' should not have left his right place on the river even if he did understand a wrong signal to be given, and they Utcid thut ho did M>. But neither pilot is cpDsuri-d for want of exrrtion to pro. vaot th<* collision after the danger was apparent. The Inspectors decides : “ Thf-re is, then, bi t one cause which produced this col hrion, and that is su the part of Mr. Willlum Wi JUm.si’u, (be pilot of th« " Kentucky Hame," io answering what he bupv o * to b« i he higoul from the pifi tor the “ Telegraph No I’-." and m Ung sa ordiug'y, when he knew it was an unusunl or wrong signal. Alt the consequence—such as plnrior himself out of his proper plat*, the near approach of the boats to a collision before th • discovery, and the col lision itself—proceed from, and aresubject to this error, anJ for this ‘ inattention to the duties of hia statloo,’ (it being ao error of judgmeut, wherein others, no doubt, would hate done the sums thing under the same c.ircumßlKDces.t Hi.-l .-n'-s-Jenog the lc*< 'f time aod h < petise be has b«.*eD at a*, feuding t his lo Vi si igatjon, we sustend hia license to art n> h lir -ud pii.'t for thirty Joys Irma this dote.
