FRIOAY MORNING:::: Church in the Ninth Ward.—The Metho dists in the Ninth Ward are soliciting aid for the erection of a suitable Church building. They are compelled to do this as the pnblio Bchool hoUBO which heretofore was occasionally used to hold service in, has been torn down, and they are now without any other resort than the open air. Tho proposed building will only cost. $lO 000. Tho circular from which we obtain the above faots, stateß furthermore there is great neod of a ohurch edifice iu the vicinity, for not only is there a respectable congregation eaob Sabbath, but also a Sunday Bchool numbering nearly thrco hundred children. Bishop Simpson and Mr. Baird, Presiding Elder of this District, endorse tbe enterprizo as one deserving encour agement. Any porson therefore, who wishes to oast his “ bread upon the waters p with tho cer tainty that “it will return after many days,” oonld hardly go amiss in giving a donation to this ohurch. it is certainly bettor to provide for the Greeks at Gar doors than to bo sending thousands for tho conversion of the heathen at Boorioboola Gha, or raising a fund “ to provide ovory little nigger baby in the interior of Africa with a red flannel shirt!” Havb we a Mosquito among us? —Has any person seen a mosquito this Beason? Has any person heard one ? or has any person pelt one ? Those are questions wo hear on every side, and, Btrango to say, have yet to find the individual who oan answer In the affirmative. It is a fact, theso musical little creaturco aro alarmingly scarce the present season ; but it is not strange, sldcs old Aquarius has been bo often overturning hia watering pot of late that it baa no doubt drowned the poor things What a pity ! We learn from a New Jersey journal that there Is a gentleman In Brooklyn, whose fame is in all tbo papers, taking n census of the mosquitos of 1855, and preparing tables to show their num ber, compared with tho records of the provioas lustrums of 1885, ’4O, ’45 and ’5O At the last period they amounted to 6,655,321,987, which it Is supposed they have never exceeded, except, perhaps, in tho cholera season. A good progress has been mode in the present enumeration, as the gentleman's necessary attention to earth quakes and tho weather will allow; and the public will be glad, or sorry, perhaps, to learn that he has already twenty four billions on his list, where v»c pray he may keep them. . The Crops in Allegheny County—Effects OF THE Rain. —A letter dated July the 28th, from Findley township* gives the following in relation to the crops and the progress In gather ing them: “ For nearly two weeks we have had rain al most every day. The grain is being cut, ao&eo much damp is quite injurious to it;-, indeed some of the wheat shocks, where exposed to the wot, are Commencing to sprout.* This will bo a serious loss if wo do not soon have fair weather. Tho wheat is generally an average yield ; gome fields aro very good and seme are very bad. ( Rye is about the same; as there was an unusual quantity cf it sown we shall have a great deal more hero hero than formerly.) Gnss is not plentiful because many of the meadows were killed with tho drouth and grub worm las: Bea son, though some of them aro Tory pool. Oils have no good an appearance as over wc have osen them, but (be recent ruins have put them down. AU Linda of harvesting is attend ed with extra labor, on account of tho many rains. Pasture is abund mi, but is soft, conse quently stock dees not thrive as woli as when abundant.” FS dot. WEEKLY MOSEY ABTICLE, Pittsdtjeo ii, August 2,18GG. Them is nothing new to note In regard to money matters In ibis city. A good deal is wnnted'to purchase sugar, mo lasses, wool, Ac.; and when the new wheat comes lnio the tßBrket there will he an active demand. For over two weeks it has rained neerly every day, and some damage is no doubt done to the wheat; but no very extensive injury is to b 8 apprehended. The crop is so large that Lhcrc will be an abandance of food. A strong effort will be made nest winter to extend great* ly the banking capital of this Btat«; and our candidates f o r legislative honors should icok over the list of applica tions for banks, and they will see plenty of work prepared for them if elected. We publish the Up; that the public may be informed in time of the projocts of our financiers. It ia at least evidence of plenty of ineney in our State, and ot a HtroDg de»ire to make it u»or»: so in the form of bank The following 1* given by the Harrisburg Herald as a correct list of the bank charters which the papers notify un will be applied fbr during the next session of the Legisla ture. There are seventy six new banka and thirteen old ones 1 The latter ae marked with a star. Some of them are asking for a change cf title, and all of them for an increase of capital, os named in our columu cf figure. Where the application designates the amount ot capital, with the privilege of increasing it to a greater sum, wo have taken the latter. Will the people cf Pennsylvania look well to this matter, and be careful who they to represent them in the next Legislature? iPPUCAT!OS9 PRCM PUIU&KtPOU OITT.
