THURBOAY MORNING Free Son “Convention.”—A email number of persons in favor of Free Soilism gathered to gether yesterday morning, and prooeeded to go through the routine which ie thought by some necessary to prevent this great oountry from being afflioted with the evils of slavery. For some time the meetings of tho Freo Soilerß have been elimly attended; indeed that one held yesterday could only be called a “Convention** by courtesy. We subjoin the report of the “ James Eobb was called to the ohair, and Messrs. R. C. Fleeßon and E. H. Irish appoint ed Secretaries. The ohalrman stated that the meeting was held by those favorable to the Free Soil Plat form adopted in this city in 1852. On motion the platform of 1852 was read. On motion a committee of five was appointed to prepare business for the Convention. The chair appointed J. H. McClelland, Dr. E. D. Hazzam, Wm. M. Shinn, A. H. Fioyd and J. B. oanderson said committee. After the appointment of the oommittee W. . Stevenßon was called on to address the meet ibg. Ho complied with the call, but did not Enow the object of the meeting. He was, how Over, in favor of tho Free Soil movement at all times and in all plaoes. His speech was ablo find radical anti-slavery. Remarks were made by Messrs. Fleeaon, and Rev. Beacon, of tho Universallot churoh. A Wathr SrouT.—A water spout burst on the 25th inst., in Clarion county, near the bead of Beaver creek, a stream that empties into tho Clarion river. The only notice tho inhabitants had of the approaching calamity was a noise like the roar of mighty waters, when almost in stantly tho oreek rose five feet above high water mark, sweeping away bridges, fenoes, corn, po tatoes, &0., and doing a vast amount of other iojary. Mr. M. Tnrnoy’s saw mill and dam Were so entirely destroyed that not a vestige re mained; the dam of Mr. Gardner was also de stroyed; that of Mr. dyers was greatly dam* aged; and that of Mr. Cope was slightly injured/ ■'The destruction at Eaglo Furnace was vory considerable. The dam, saw mill, bridge and blacksmith shop was swept away, find the furnace stopped at present ia conse quence. Bat one bridge escaped destruction on the whole creek. Important to more than a Few — A Phila delphia paper announces that a man of the name of Smith (John) who was born in 16w7, and died at the good old ago of 109, in 1806, left a fortune of $2,600,000, for which heirs are now wanted. Another journal of the same city announces that there ia to bo a meeting of all the Smiths in Philadelphia, Bomo timo this month, to determine who is entitled to tho leg acy, or If not ablo to agree, to divide it. If the latter plan iB adopted it will we fear prove a poor speculation, for it ia estimated the number of persons in tho world bearing the cognomen of Smith is fire millions,-which would leave only half a dollar a-piece to each heir.
