The Harrisburg Keystone has hoisted the name of George M. Dallas to its mast head for the Presidency in 1856 ; the Democrat, a Ger man paper of the same town also presents the name of the late Vice President as Pennsylva nia's favorite eon. We publish to day the names of the members of a Committee appointed by Thomas Farley Esq., who was Chairman of the late County Can ty Convention. Why this Committee's appoint- ed at all it would be difficult to say, unless it is that the old Committee, whose time is not yet oat, did not suit the purposes of some of our politicians. We care very little about it, how ever, as the now Committee is as good as the old. But the old Committee meets on Saturday next for business, and there is a fair prospect of a conflict of jurisdiction. We need harmony in the party this year, and with it might win success. Bat we would pre fer to have a Democratic ticket nominated la the old fashioned and usual way—by a Democratic County Convention elected by the people. That was the old fashion, and a good one, and we re gret that there was a change of usage this year. It was a bad bete to try new expedients, or adopt ner: ouetoms. We presume the new committee has been ap pointed with a view to getting op a flatell Bat of that there is small ohanoe now. The great body of the old line Whirs are earnest for the formation of a Republican party, to be com posed of Free boilers, K. Isl.'s, and all others, for the purpote of defeating the Demooraoy. It is not likely that the friends of that prnjeat will faro with Democrats. A call for a Republican County Convention is already published and in airoulation, and the Gazette is confident that the soh.mewill succeed here as well as in Ohio and Indiana The Democracy must rely on its eau strength and uumbi , rs for success. To preserve our own org ,nizstion and principles i 3 the firat purpose; to elect our ticket, if possible, the neat. The party that " never surrenders" will in the end succeed. For our part we are reedy to support a Demo 0-stio ticket and do battle for the party as the Peat has been accustomed to do for many a year; bat to try now expedients that promise little but the destruction of the party is not In oar Bac. The old committee, It will be remembered, meats at the St. (iaries Hotel on Saturday (to• Morrow) at 11 o'clock, A. M. A full attendance IO desirable. We suppose the new colon/Wee is announced jest et this time, for the purpose of heading off the old one. The New York Times is earnestly advocating the employment of females as Merkel and sales men in stores—partioularly in all retail dry goods stores. It is an employment for which they are well fitted, and would properly enlarge their sphere of Orden and occupation. And it is a business that they can do better than men. They are more active and expert at htuadling dry goods, more tasteful in folding and arranging them, more polite and conciliatory to customers, and have better judgment in all matters of taste in relation to dress. Oa the other hand young Men should bo employed in more active and manly labor. Measuring off calicos and tape is too light a task for their physical strength, and is usurping a place and occupation that properly belongs to women. We * ire decidedly in favor of this branch of women's - rights being conceded to them. It would give employment at good wages to a great rattly young ladies, and 'would be degrading to no one willing to earn O . living. If the ladles generally prefer those stores whero females are employed to sell goods, a change would soon be effected, and women bo employed In all the stores. The employments of females ore hemming more =mane and remunerative every year, and It le right that it ohould be so. In the New England States and in New York nearly all the public eohools era taught by ladies both In sum mer and winter. Thie enlargement of the sphere of womeu'e activity end usefulness is a matter of public economy. It gives them work that they can do no well as men, and it diverts rliti labor of men into other channels, and to more athletic and useful employments. In this aativoigo and country there is no difficulty In men finding useful and lucrative employment— work, too, better suited to their physical natures than measuring off tape and calico. tia B OUT/ N PEULABTECEOPETI—Edward Backus, a Virginia.elave, who wished to redeem himself and family made application to the Grand -Anti. [Pr:•m the Philadelphia North American.] Cage A ridiculous excitement occurred at Pittsburgh on Sunday and Monday, the result of which must have made the partioipante feel foolish. Mr. H. B. Northup, of Sandy Hill, N Y., arrived in that city on Sunday, and visited the Clerk of the 11. 8. District Court-Am some. businees. Immediately a rumor got afloat that he was a slave:or/totter, taking measures for the capture of altigitive; arid-after he-had - retired wind, on Sunday night; a committee waited on. him to ascertain the truth of the report, in order probably, to frustrate his eupposeel jntent. He atoned them that ho was the same person who released from slavery the kidnapped - colored freeman, Solomon Northup, and therefore, so far from being a slave• catcher, was opposed to the institution. Cue might suppose that after such an explanation all furthCr trouble would have ceased; but his story was received with se doubt that he was the man he alleged, one fel low crying out that "he might have stolen the livery of a saint to serve the devil in." Next morning twteraore committees waited on him with inquiries, and somehow the furious aboli tionism of the mob was nt last appeased. Pitts burgh seems to be as sensitive on the subject of slavery as South Carolina, and the recent per secution of Mr. Jeliffe in the Palmetto State is about of o piece with the proceedings in our Western emporium. Mr. Joliffo, the reader will remember, is a citizen of Cincinnati, and ono of the executors of a South Carolina gen tleman who died suddenly in the Queen City, which be had visited for the purpose of emanci pating some slaves to whom ho left all hie pro perty. In pursuance of his duty as executor, Mr. Joliffo went to South Carolina, to take the requisite legal steps connected with the oaee, and while at Barnwell Court House, or rather` the town of that name, he was waited upon at the hotel, the morning after his arrival by a mob deputation, who wanted to put him at once into the railroad care, and send him out of the State. Fortunately Mr. Joliffs espied in the crowd a lawyer to whom ho had letters, and by the delivery of them he found ao influential friend, who calmed down the excitement and induced the mob to disperse. In this case the offence of the victim was his supposed opinion reference to slavery, which in the Pittsburgh affair, an heaginary reverse of sentiment was the MOO of trouble Such absurd domonstra• lions harm their perpetrators more than any one else, and ebow into what excessea this sectional excitement will run. If chive holders and slave seekers are mobbed in the north, abo litlODietB will, naturally enough, be mobbed at tae South; and it it would be folly to look at the one extreme of fanaticism without regarding the other. [lt is a pity that Pittsburgh should have such a name abroad, particularly, when she Is far from deserving it. We are confident three fourths of our °Weans have no sympathy wha'evcr with the fanaticism that dictates these proceedings; but we are to blame for allowing a few hundred abolitionists, white and black, thus to misrep resent the true sentiments of the community. Within lees than a year a free colored woman and her children were stolen from the protection of her guardian, thereby depriving her of a comfortable living; and the has since been com pelled to eke out a miserable subsistence as beet she could. Another free colored woman was abducted by a gang belonging to a secret society of free negroes. An attempt was made to run off the nurse belonging to the Hon. Lynn Bold, bat this did not succeed in consequence of tho Captain of the steamer threatening to shoot down the first man of the gang who came on board. A abort time ago a number of cohered people were induced to leave their conductor, and we have the authority of a Culpepper (Cs ) paper for stating that these persons were on their way to another free State—but that the owner was very glad to get rid of them. And now we have this last scene la the black drama, which will aeon render us as notorious for "nig ger stealing," as the Missourians are for another description of lawlessness. It is high time these fanatical proceedings were stopped ; for as our Philadelphia cotemporary says, we moat expect to be treated unhandsomely in the South, if we invade and trample upon the rights of her till :one when they come among us ] Young tenret and to Have an Opportunity Tao disastrous battles to the Crimea, wherery some of the oldest end moot famous officers in the British army have been slain, are nevertheless not unmi . ig,oted evils L , 1113.1.g150 io now dead anti gone, and is succeeded by a man mach younger comparatively. COL KINNEY TURNED lle —From a letter In the New York Evening Poet we have accounts from the redoubtable Col. Kinney. It appears in company with eighteen others he left New York in the schooner Emma, on the 6th of June, destined for Central America, but the vessel was wrecked on the , Cayocs Islands. The provisions laid in for the_expedition wore lost, and great danger !soured by the passengers. We learn also that arrangements have been promptly male for renewing tho supply of provisions and forwarding them immediately from the United States. The persons engaged in the expedition are represented as in good health and spirits, and quite undienouraged by the disaster which has befallen the vessel. The British authorities of the island on which they were wrecked, ap pear, according to private accounts which hsve been received, to have behaved in a most friend ly and obliging manner, doing everything in their power to make the passengers of the Em ma comfortable after their misfortune, and pro oaring every facility in their power to enable them to proceed to their destination. ,ggir We want no bettor evidence of the wor ship of the almighty dollar in this country than the following facts : A few days ago it was an nounced a little girl at Gilmanton, N. H., was fascinated by two black snakes, which she regu• larly fed, and which were mach attached to her. It was then suggested that " a mint of money" might be made out of so unusual an exhibition, but the parents of the obild would not at the time think of it. From the following, however, whioh we dud in the Manchester (N. H.) Mirror, of Saturday last, it seems they have altered their minds and determined to make hay while the sun shines The parents of the little girl, Oraline Jano Hill, who is charmed by two black snakes, have changed their Um determination, and yesterday afternoon made an exhibition at Rumford Hall, Concord. A thousand people visited them, so great is their curiosity to see them. The girl is very pretty, only Biz years old next month. Only the smaller snake goes with them, and that i 9 four feet three and a half inches long, and is idolized by the girL Her father informed us last evening that when she sleeps now she curls herself up like a snake, incredible as it may seem. Prrrsauuau, July 17th, 1865 Thomas Foley, Esq. The late Democratic County Convention unan- Imouely deputed you to appoint a committee for the purpose of placing in nomination A county ticket free from all suspicion of Know Nothing affinity. A years' experience had Bug . :gested the neoetisity of. this course. Last year, you will remember, our L'ountiConvention con tained no less than thirty-seven -. Know-Nothings; these reckless trieheters succeeded by deception and falsehood in securing for themselves the organization of the Convention, in playing mem bers of their order upon our county ticket and in having several Know Nothings appointed upon our County Committee of Correspondence. This shameless and profligate deception will be re peated this coining fall, and successfully, unities decisive measures be adopted to prevent it. We have a party's integrity and reputation intrus ted to our keeping ; we must not be de linquent in guarding them from dishonor. In order to more fully carry out the instruc tions given you by the Convention, the under signed, members of the County Committee of Correepondence, suggest the propriety of your appointing upon the authorized Committee, one from each election district in the county. ALLIOHENY CITY, July 19th, 1866 G entlemen —ln accordance with your sugges• tion, I have appointed the following Committee Since the adjournment of the Convention which authorized the appointment of a Com mittee. I have had numerons applications to appoint particular persons; in no ease have I selected those who solicited appointments, neither have I appointed any one whose name I heard mentioned for county nomination. In discharging this delicate and responsible duty, I have endeavored to select men who will bo governed in their actions by considerations of public duty, and whose proceedings will justify the confidence reposed in me by the Convention whioh authorized their appointment. In forming a ticket for the support of all who are oppooed to irresponsible and secret com binations, great care and circumspection should be exorcised. Mon of good character, exem plary habits, and acknowledged qualificatione, only should be thought of; the people ex pect randidatee passesced of these qualities, and will be satisfied with no others. Nom inations need not be confined to those who are seeking them; the most un worthy are eotne times the most exacting, while genuine merit is modest in Its own behalf. Bat this Committee having power to choose without previous prom. ieee or instructions, will, I feel persuaded, select none but men whose characters and qualifications will boar public scrutiny. [Front the Buthdo Exprets. , 17th.1 Dreadful Calamity 1-.Sti Person■ 13urnt to Death I I We are pained to record a dreadful cal mity which occurred In the town of Brant, in this county, on Saturday night last, which involved the lives of els persona. The family of Mr. James Thompson, a highly respectable farmer, aged 64 years, consieting of twelve persons, re tired to rest, at the usual hour, all In good health and under feelings of the moat perfect security. At about twelve o'clock, two of the sons, who were sleeping in the upper part of the house, awakened under feelings of suffocation created by heat and smoke. They hastened to make their escape from the flames which were crack ling around them, and in doing so, fell down the stairway, thereby creating a noise, which waked Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, who were sleeping be low. They escaped, taking with them a little boy aged about five years. Two other sons also made their escape. In the meantime the entire building was enveloped in flames, and Mr. Thompeon, prompted by a father's devotion, again returned to the burning premises to save his daughters and grand children. Ho was not seen again until his charred remains were found within three feet of the door at which ho enter ed. Throe daughters, aged twenty-eight, thir teen and eleven years, were consumed, as were also two grand children, aged four and two years. These were the ohildren of the eldest daughter. Thera is no doubt that this calamit ous fire was the work of an incendiary and enough information was elicited before the Cor oner's inquest to lead to the suspicion that the wretch who applied the torah was none other than the husband of the oldest daughter and the father of the little ones who perished. If this suspicion should prove well founded, the ingenuity of man has not yet invented any mode of punishment adequate for so hellish a deed. A Know Nothing on So ca. Within a few months the Louisville Courier has suffered sorely from proscription by the Hag . Nicbta, beoeueo of its ultra Know Nothingiem and now, on account of a freak of independence, It is being proscribed by the Know Nothings. The editor says that for months he resisted all eolioitatione to join the Know Nothing order, but at last yielded to the entreaties of his friende against the convictions of his better judgment. He now states that his experience le that:— No man that has any self-respect or independ ence can belong to it twelve months without sac ritioing both. It contains features which, sooner or later, must cause every one who has a particle of manliness in his composition to revolt at the organization and leave it with disgust. It is au organization which may suit unscrupulous poll tiolane to use for their own selfish purposes, but it will drive from it all good men, and will in fallibly fail from its own weakness. The above appeared in the Courier some days ago. In Monday's paper the editor said he had expected to be bitterly denounced and pro ecribed, but did not anticipate that matters would be carried to such an extent as has been proposed. He says : We have been threatened that the entire and concentrated power and influeoco of the order would be used to crush us, unless wo yielded our rights and duties of a good citizen, and submit ted to the diotation of a set of men whose only motives are to secure power and place. Our ap plication to withdraw from the order was denied, because, as a member remarked, " We have got the Courier man just where we want him. We will not permit him to withdraw, but will keep hie month shut until after the election, and then we will expel and disgrace him!" The Courier expresses a determination to fight it out." It eays : The order has began the war on us. Wo accept the challenge, and pledge ourselves that before we are done with an exposition of its deformities, Know Notbingletn, u now constituted, will be a stench in the nos trils of all decent people. ," . - • w .:~~;~ -.~; MINSI What a Dhicaixo Mna thinks of Pitta- i k3 Syphilis, Scrofula &Di d slood. burgh. —For thaw terrific di9eeees, Carter's Spanish Mixture is A traveler from the Garden City having visited --tbe - only our city struck with the extent and variety, The proprietors have in their possession over one hum deed certificates of the most extraordinary mires effected as well as our facilities for meant:Mures, and by it thereupon indites a letter to the Pemociat(e We refer to the certificate of Eklund Adams, late High Press, a part of which we re-publish. Pittsburgh is au in land city, surrounded by barren mountains, and until railroad's became a moans of communica tion, her only method of commercial in teroourse with the east was by the " dote coach" of the Pennsylvania Canal, or the slower clout' of the four horse wagon; and with the west and south west by the waters of the Ohio, which Randolph satirically described as a stream " one half of the year frozen, the other half dry." Unlike Chicago, her advantages, (to make an Irish bull,) have been against her, and but for the latent power in her coal bade Fort . Pitt would have been as Fort Niagara— bothf founded at about the same time, both having an Indian and a French history—an obscure village at the head of navigation of the Ohio, famous only in the history alluded to asthe scene of Braddock's defeat, and Washington's first promise of mili tary talent and heroism. Coal has made her a city unrivalled, in indue trial forces and manufacturing capabilities, by any city west of the mountains. Is there a boat to be built, to ply on the Mississippi above the falls, Pittsburgh builds it. Have the furs and peltries of the plains or slopes of the Rocky Mountains to be transported to market in the shortest possible manner, a Pittsburgh-built boat leavea the levee and casts anchor in the head waters of the Missouri Does a boa' need re pairs In all the western rivers, she seeks the yards of the Iron City. All this you shall see upon her wharves, and within her walls a thousand appliances, and a force of industrial skill and talent gathered from all civilized na tions. And why ? High up her hills is found five and a half feet of carbon, stretching off under the tops of the hills,- southward and east ward, and westward. A strong arm, a little powder, a pick and a drill, with a railroad track and ears, and this carbon is delivered at the base of the hills, and if need be, into the very month of Pumices, and at the door of mennfaa tories. Pittsburgh has her fuel in boundless supply ; but she is deficient in raw material. This she draws to her through the various channels of commerce, from far distant and widely separated sources, as to a common centre. Undergoing manipulations, this material, in ten thousand new forms of utility and convenience, of taste and art, is again widely distributed over our western country. Each change this new mate rial undergoes adds to her cumulative wealth. Each new shape it assumes contribute to her credit and prosperity.
