The receipts of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail road for June (Main Stem and Washington Branch) are $872,285—f0r same month last year, s343,63l—increase over last year $23,- 004. At Maysville,' Ky., large contracts have been made at slesl,lo for wheat, 76(711. SO cents for rye, and $1 for barley. In a few eases $1,1201 $1,75 has been otTered and accepted for wheat for early delivery. „ Dick Tinto," in his last letter from Paris, states the 'French shipment of wounded and eiek from the Crimea amount to 43,000 men' The dead must be reckoned at 100,000 more. It is said also that the cholera is raging in the French army before Sebastopol. It was at Fort Griswold, where daring the Revolution the British committed an eat which completely throws in the shade all such massa cres as Range. The American commander, on delivering up his sword, had it thrust through his heart by the Englieh officer, and the garrison were butchered to a man. SALL.PRIEs O COUNTY SCSI , SUPERIP NTENDENTS. A farmer friend sends us a communicatien in which he objects to raising the salary of the Su perintendent of Common Schools, in Allegheny county, as was suggested in the Poet recently by T. J. Bighom, Esq., (chairman of the School Convention which elected the Superintendent In 1864) and which we beg leave to say is the sen timent of nine-tenths of the people generally who take a deep interest in the Public &boole. Hie main objection appears to be based on the fact that many counties in the Commonwealth with a population nearly as great as Allegheny, pay salaries much less in proportion. Be then itatanoes several, among them Berke, which provided tin miserable pittance of $250 as a !Wary for Mr. Goode, the County Superinten dent. Neighbor; your argument wont hold good. Soon after the enactment of new School Law, St Is notorious many counties were opposed to the measure; so the Boards of Directors thought the best way to bring it into disrepute was to fix the Superintendent's salary so low no competent man would accept the office. Among the/2_wco old Berke. But this did not succeed; fcr Mr. —.ov-try-Man, performed -'".. a competent awe the d.eeter - str satisfactorily that recently the Di rectors met and raised his stipend to $1,200 per year. So that example is rather an unfortunate one. But the true point at issue is whether a com petent gentleman con bo found to fill, for any length of time, the position, with the present salary. Mr. Pryor, who woe first elected, we believe resigned because the pay was not in proportion to the duties ; and we have no doubt the worthy gentleman who now fills the office has the same complaint to make. It is true, men in abundance can be found to accept the poet at the present pay ; but whether men fit for the station will accept, or if accepting it, will bold it long, is another question. Those having the education of cur youth in charge, arc en trusted with the most important of duties, and therefore should nut have ouch a beggarly allow ance as to drive capable men from the ranko• We consequently go in for an increase of eatery' The Harkgo Dial laCre Story. The story of the massacre of an English boats , crew by the Russians, at Mango, appears to be a precious piece of. fiction, gotten up by Brnm, the person who was represented aa " the only one rho survived to tell the story." The House of Commons and the cold dignified Lords were badly humbugged ; for it turns out the three English officers in the boat, four eeomen and two Fine are entirely unhurt and are prisoners. The rest were killed or wounded by the fire of the 'Baseless. This etatement has been since made in the House of Commons by fir Chas. Wood, who said the Governor of Hulaingfors xxcused and justified, to a certain extent, the act which had taken place, and declared that the officers and soldiers said that they saw no flag of truce, and that they bad been irritated by vessels heist log Russian colors on some cooseions, and that, as reported in the newspapers, English vessels had elsewhere, under the color of a flag of truce, taken soundings. No excuse has yet been of fered for the sack sad pillage of Bertsch, by Znglieh, Turks and French, after the inhabitants had surrendered end offered the invaders breed and salt in token of submission ; when " chil dren were out into mincemeat, and women were carved like joints of roast mutton," besides be leß put to extempore uses too shocking to relate. THE FOURTH AT ALTOONA - The glorious Fourth was celebrated with unusual spirit at Altoona. The cloud•capped Alleghenies were made to reverbrato with the sound of martial music and salvos of artillery announced the dawn of Freedom's natal day. Two military companies were out on parade. L. W. Hall, Esq., read the Declaration of Independence, and Major W. A. Stokes, of Pittsburgh, was the or ator of the day. Major Stokes' theme was "the Life and Services of Washington," which it le represented he treated in a beautiful and elo4 . cent manner. Ho goes baek to Ireland, the land of his birth, to attend to some matters of a private nature. A POPULAR coLLsor.,-"- The Philadelphia High School, Prof. Hart Principal, held its annual commencement on Thursday last, on which ocoasion • 19 young gentlemen had - conferred upon them the degree of Master of Arts, 'and 29 the degree of Bach elor of Arts. Besides, there were 29 who graduated under the partial course of two, two and whalf and three years, as well as 189 who were deemed worthy of meritorious mention. The Philadelphia High School is One of the most potent engines for good in this or any other Commonwealth, and without intending to speak disparagingly of other inetitutions of learning, we venture to say it fits out more young men for the practical duties of life than any three Colleges in the Union. There the sons of butchers, bakers, shoemakers, printers, clerks, and hatters, figure in company with. merchants, bankers, shippers, clergymen, and physicians, In most democratic array,—which accounts for the great and universal interest the people of our sister oily feel in its success. High School Commencement day is always an event in the Quaker City. While the Commencement at the Penneylva 7niversity is often thinly attended, by the soleot friendo of the half dozen young gentlemen who annually receive their diploma : that of the High School is always crowded to excess. The elevated estimate placed upon it by merchants is evinced in the fact that almost the first question rung man is asked who wishes to enter mer cantile life ie, " Are you a graduate of the High School!" if an answer in the affirmative is given, the applicant is generally without further questioning taken on trial; for experienee has shown the education there received is one emi nently fitting him for business life. We hare no doubt the High School authorized by the Pittsburgh Board of Cautrol will be productive. of like good re:Ailtd, and ITO hope it may go into operation :Teed:ly. The jury find that Robbins coma by hie death from a musket ball. fired either by a member of the Rifle Guard or some person noting as a volunteer, by order and command of Neal Dow, the Mayor of the city ; that the Rifle Guards were called out un der a preempt signed by said Dow, which was unauthorized by any law of the State, and wholly void ; that, although the Mayor and eomo of the Aldermen had reason in the early part of the day to apprehend a disturbance, they took no means to prevent the assemblage ; and that, in the early stage of the proceedings, a few polecemen, acting in concert, oonld easily have diepersod it ; and that the military, when they discharged their muskets, were wholly out of eight of the crowd upon whom they fired, and who appear to have had no previous notice of their presence or designs. The jury say no proof was furnished of any exigency existing requiring a resort to snob extreme measures, and that the act is without any legal justification or excuse. John Robbins, they decide, died by felony, and not by miachanee ; but whether his ' death was a murder or a homicide, they leave for the State tribunals to decide. We suppose, therefore, that Dow will be indicted and tried. A PATRIOT Dan.—Died, on Tuesday last, July ad, in Ridge Prairie, Mr. Samuel Redman,. in the 89th year of his ago. Mr. Redman was born in Culpepper ozatnty, Virginia, on the 28th of July, 1766, and was at the time of his death believed to be the oldest man in St. Clair. He emigrated to Monroe cauuty in this State in 1797, and settled near New Design, where he remained a few yearend then moved to Ridge Prairie, about six miles from this city. At a remarkably early age he joined the Revolutionary army, and for many years has he been consulted for interesting re miniscences of that eventful period. Though hie term of service was necessarily short, and though he was quite young at the time his mind was stored with anecdotes illustrative of the trials and triumphs of the days which tried men's nerves and souls To the last hie memo ry retained much of the vigor of his younger years.—St. Clair (111.)
