Mr. Cookman, the new pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, .who is now. in that place attending the Annual Pittsbetrgh gonference. He says : . On'Satorday evening an immense audience assembled to witness the anniversary of the Mitt- SitinarYSociety. Rev. Alfred Cookman, of Penn -street church, Pittsbtirgh, and Dr. John P. Dur bin, electrified the audience with two of the most'powerful speeches to which it has ever been Our privilege to listen. Cookman is a gifted son of eloquence, and nature has given him a most exuberant fancy. His speeches abound in the moat gorgeous imagery, and in this respect he is said to resemble his distinguished father who was lost with the steamship President, and now Bleeps his long sleep beneath the storm tossed billows of the Atlantic. Of DUrbin, as a great thinker and a great orator, it is scarcely neces sary to speak, lie presented some most striking thoughts on the subject of missions. Cook- Mares speech might be said to abound with the lightning flashes of genius, while Durbin follow ed in one continual thunder roll of ponderous thought. On Sabbath morning the Rev. Mr. C. preached iu the Presbyterian Conrch from Heb. XII, 1, 2. The Church was literally filled to overflowing.. We wish we were able to give a synopsis of the discourse, but it is a task which we are unable to execute. We would as soon think of dhguerreotypiug the storm, or with our feeble voice, of imitating the roar of the thun der, as undertake to convey to our readers the impression made by Cookman's sermon. Cer. tale we are that of alt who hoard it no one will forget it." It was feared, too, that the large amount cf rain which has fallen would be likely to rust the wheat that to rank and lying on the ground; but as yet no curb com plaints hove reached us. The torte amount, comparatively, of theta article, in hand iu the Western cities, together with a decline in the East, real I hove no cater effect. In Buffalo, the amount arriving, for the week ending June 0, was considerable In advance of the some week lest year; the same wee the carte at th'rago and ...St.. Louis. With regard to the latter point, the Democrat of Monday says: "An astral on Retarday, the market was eiceedingty dull more an than for the two or three days previous. Wheat continues eirooying, under the influence of steady moderate receipts, and the existence of no export demand for either wheat or flour. The wheat harvest Line already commenced in southern Illinois ' and the new rrop will Pro bably begirt to arrive in our market soon after the let July. Prices for Corn are still drooping and unsettled ; and es hen been aeon by our quotations, scarcely one-third of the amount received during the past week bag been sold. Again to-lay receipts were liberal, and the market was very heavy, tumbling no quotation of coy amount. ho shipping demand existed that we could learn of; and Ile few sales effected, for home consumption, were made with difficulty." The reporter is gencrelly at the mercy of the speculator; Lad their is no trade is •blab there are more bulls and bears than the Wool trade. We• however, give some of those reports frcm different wool. growing regions: Some lots have already been sold of Ohio new Wool at 20445 cents El pound, including all grades; and of New York State, which it hardly so clean as Ohio wool, at 20@40 cents. The quantity Is, however, very limited About 200 bales Syrian wool, not very clean, have just been told at g.,ts% cents, and some Buenos Ayres at 0 cents for unwashed ; anu 22420 cents for washed. The stock of foreign wool is range, and consists Fri nclpally of Buenos Ayres. There continual; to arrive smell parcels of wool of California growth, wrblah sells readily at 16@tli cents Sl pound, and found very lit for carpets. There is no doubt but that the supply will increase, and will take the place, to come ex. tent, of foreign carpet wools. Auatrallan tine wools are imported here in small quantities, but these do not come in contact with home-grown wools, which are mostly of low to medium grades. A repeal of the wool duties would increase the consumption of A ustrallan wool, and give an impulse to the home manutaeture, at present crippled, of fine wool en goodr—N. Y. Port. The wool-growers of Sandusky and adjoining counties are bringing their clip Into market. 'The principal portion now offered is in small lots, from 50 to 100 pounds. Those having large quantities arc holding off expecting an ad vance from prices now maid. We do not believe anticipa tions of a rive will be realized, by any material increase. The prices paid thus far have been from 25 to 31 cents. The average we should think had been abdtit 20 cents. One house in our place has bought some 40,000 pounds.—Fre mont (Ohio) Cultivator. Tin St. Louts Democrat, of the 18th, earl The river at this point is now seven] inches lower than when the last rise commenced. It is also falling all along from the highest point that intelligence ban been received from to this place. Crossing the lower rapids Is never at tempted now, but by those boats that might be supposed able from their diminutive size to push ahead, overland, with a moderate dew upon the ground. Re-shipping, and exchanging cargoes and pass ingers, Is now " all the go" at the lower rapids. Boats, very light cf draught, that have left here for St. Paul within the past eight or tan days, fully conthlent of their ability to cross the rapids, have found it impracticable. Below Keokuk and this place, we hear of two boats aground. the Swallow below Lagrange, and f. e Bay City at Levertms. The Mississippi continues to fall, and when It will come to a stand, there is no telling: some consider It not at all Improbable that the Mississippi will within a few weeks be entirely run out, and. Its channel es dry as the adjoining chores. One old river man who has navigated the Upper Mississippi for twenty-six years past, declares that he never saw the river above the rapids so low before as it is this season. This same maxi also argues that deep snows In the North, never rake the river; because it invariably happened that when the snows are deep, very little rain falls In the saws regions. The Missouri is re. parted still falling, and promises to be low e noug h i n a ll conscience bye the byr. Illinois river still falls; the larg er boats have all withdrawn from it, and the smaller are losiog time by getting aground. By rvtall, Ahlf.e ore made " 1865."
