MONDAY ;MORNING - , , EXCIT&MENT OK THE ALLEGHENY RIVER.— ' 011.111 T DESTVJECHON Or RiTrs.—For several weeks peat, an imeurmse - nuraber of rafts bare been fastened and gorged In at the head of Iferr's Island—the river, for the distance of . - nearly half a mile, being perfectly choked with lumber. On Saturday morning, about half-past eight o'clock, an us. expected rise of two or three feet came down the Allegheny, and, taking the lumbermen by surprise; carried off about • sixty of these rafts, many of them heavily laden with shin gles. Moat of them were crippled in the start by having their oars unshipped. Some floats were manned, some doubly so, and many fleets of three and four rafts together were without a man to guide them The lifechani&-street B r id g e was the first obstruction offered to their progress; and but four of the fleet passed without receiving mere of less injury. • The fragments of the wreck being entirely un managable, ran promiscuously upon the piers of the Ague duet, and formed a perfect gorge from the third pier to the Allegheny shore, where there Is now piled up in the great. est confusion fragments of not less than twenty rafts. AL moiltAMMedlately on the heels of the first fleet came a se cond of still larger size, which being subjected to the addi tional obstruction of the hanging fragments at every pier of the various bridges, shared a still worse fate. During nearly the whole day the river was covered with floating fragments of rafts, and presented a singular scene. It is computed that one hundred rafts were destroyed. Lumber. men say that it is impossible to make any correct estimate of their loss, as the identity of the lumber thus strewn along the beach will be almost Impossible. Though hun dreds of men were actively engaged In endeavoring to save their lumber, and often in great peril, we are happy to learn that nb lives were lost, nor any one seriously injured. .111/PETLNO OP THE BOAIID 01? The eubjeet was iben laid over. • The resolution offered at the previous meetiog, relative to thewTacuation of the canal from Liberty street to the Monongahela - river, in favor of the Pennsylvania Railroad Colopany, was called up. Wa have seen the testimony of persons well known to us, who hare used the compound successfully, th ere by corroborating the opinion of its restorative seer gy. We know of nothing mere desirable in the way of per. moat eomelinreel anti comfort than a:gtao I bead of hatr, and any process by which this crowning ornament of the outer man ran he preserved. or recovered when leer, without, in the latter case, n resort to Wigs, Toupee and Scratches, de served he hailed and embraced with gratitude by all of either sex, who are unlucky enough to need Re benefit. We took occasion the other day to notice this valuable compound in the above terms, and now repuolish what was then said, to allow rgain our favorable opinion of it. The foregoing I, listen from the Petersburg (Virginia) bliellignlreT, arid refers to an article which has torn time ! been advertised in our columns. We must confess that we have been somewhat sceptical as to the remarkable effects attributed to this famous "Hair Restorer." But our in. credulity has been greatly shaken williin a day or two by seeing a couple of certificates of well-known and perfectly credible citizens of the neighboring town of Freston--one of them the Captain of n New London whaling ship—to the effect that, In each of three cocoa, a two or three months' use of the " Restorer" bad actually brought out a new and v i go rous grow al of hair upon the head where It was before bald—the baldness being, in one case, of more than twenty years standing. WI do not suppose It Is by any means err ' min that, became the application has been Ulna successftil in one case, or two, or a dozen, it Is therefore certain to prove equally successful in all. But with such head-strong evidence as the foregoing, very few bald heads, we suspect, Iwould willingly forego a fair trial of the " Restorer."
