Of the certainty of the Empe ror’s death ho doubt need be entertained. Lord John Russell, who is now in the Prussian capi tal, brat telegraphed home that he bad been etrnok by apoplexy; waa on tfio point of death, and had just taken leave of his family. This was shortly followed by another telegraphlo mes sage from the British Minister at Berlin, to the effect that hp actually expired at St. Petersburg yesterday morning at one o’clock. , . It is; hardly possiblo to overrate the import- . obco of, the extinction of this singlo life in tbe present circumstances of this and other countries. •Its effeot must be great and immediate, and it U moro than probable that the bloody struggle im pending before Sebastopol, in which thousands oMitrestwbulil certainly be sacrificed, may be spared by the event whioh we annonnea this morning. '.Tatlie onse of the extinction of a de spotic monarch like the Emperor of. Russia, whose'will wasTifßlatrof fifty or cixty millions of people; the pblicy whloh ho embodled pbiie living, dies with him,- 'and: tho: reßtofation of peace, becomes, under the circumstances; less e . matter of doubt than of certainty. , Although onr enemy, it is oseiess to deny that the dead Csar was a great man, no well as & mighty potentate. Notwithstanding the melan choly fact of a-qourter ‘of a million of hnman creatures having perished, one way or another, since tbs war began; sacrificed, in point of fact, to the insatiable ambition of an nnscropuioas ruler, yet he had many fine qualities of head and heart; and to such of the British nation as set tled in Russia he. was extremely partial, and al ways paid them the most marked attention. The lion preys not npon carcassee. /We can afford to do justice to departed worth, even in the per son of a foe, and it'ie'not too much to gay that if he bad terminated his career witbont the Turkish aggression which produced this war, history would have enrolled him amongst the most intelleotnal and successful Monarchs of modern Europe. Perhaps it ie as well for the future peace t-fttha world, that this outbreak of Russian rapacity'took piaoe when it did, for - guarantees will cow bo enforced which will ef fectually prevent its repetition. The fangs of the wolf will bo drawn, and the lesson wbioh he has been taught will tell upon his successors for aenturies.
