The Beead Suits.— -A hearing in tho cose of a large number of bakers indtoted, under the or dinance, for selling Bread of light weight, was had before Alderman Donaldson, of the Fourth Ward, yesterday. _ Four of tho .Mayor’s police, Messrs. Frost, Troviilo, Moon and SpenCß, oertified that iu por nuance of instructions from the Mayor, they had 'visited and .purchased a loaf of Bread from twenty bakers in the city, (whoso names we an nex,) which they brought to the office, where it was weighed by the Clerk Of the Market, Mr. Taggart. This gentleman being called to the 6tand, gave the following as the weight of the differ ent loaves: John Shephard, Liberty street, 1 pound 8 canoes. John Bioeler, Wylie street, 1 pound 15 ounces L. Patty, corner High and Wylio .streets, 1 pound 11 ouuccb. - A.; & P. Schildeoker, Diamond alley, 15 ounces. J. W. Faaß, Pennsylvania Avenue, 1 pound 7} ounces. J. Shoeb, Smithfield street, 12 ounces. Cbrißtopher Smarts, corner Ferry and Third etreets, 1 pound 8 ouucob. Davis Johnson, Smithfield street, 1 pound 8 onnees. S. Barnes & Co., First street, 1 pound 14 ounces.; John Lees, Penn street, 1 pound 14 ounces. (A large pieco was broken oat of this loaf in the baking ) Mrs. Wilson, Penn street, Fifth Ward, 1 pound 9 dunces. , John Banes, Penn street, 1 pound 12 ounoeß. Martin Conuoly, Penn street, 1 pound 7 ounces.' Henry Nice, Penn street, Fifth Ward, 15 ounces. J. Chamberlain, Wylio street, 14£ ouncoa. . *Georgo Gloss, Ninth Ward, 1 pound. ’ Wm. Johnston, Smithfield street, 1 pound H on&ees.- 6 Georgo Skinner, Liberty street, 1 pound 8 ounces. VMorris Marlin, Pcnu street. Fifth Ward, 1 pound 7 ounces. ■ --Christ. Gleohtlcr, Penn street, Fifth Ward, 3 pound G ounces: * Messrs. W. 11. Irwin and John Mellon appear* ©d for the defendants, and Mr. M f Calmont rt-pre scnted the city. After some consultation among • these gentlemen, it was agreed that the argu* moots in the case would bo made this morning, and the decision of the Alderman on a single ©ase should apply to all. Messrs. Johnston and Skinner, mentioned in the above list, subsequently paid the fine to Which they were liable, in case of conviction, without waiting for the decision of the magis trate.. Wc may say in justice to Mr. Skinuer that he alleges that the bread sold by him was baited by another person, and he was not aware of its" Light weight. Very tew or too bakers were aware that there was an ordinance in exist cuce defining the weight ©f bread; they say, that it was not fair to bring them up for punishment, without notifying them first of the intention. It is alleged by them in defence, if their broad wa light, it was more by Occident (ban design ; that a loaf of bread will decrease in weight rap dly after being taken out the oven; that from the carelessness or igno . janoc of their, workmen, the proper allowance is mot always made for ibis decrease, and conse quently, when the bread is cold,lt will fall a-few ' ounces below, the legal standard. Wc confess there is some show of reason in this argument, a number of the persona complained . .. of; but whtre the deficit ia as much as half a oiore, thocxcUßO is not valid. Unlike the “ Sangratlo” practice of bleeding and purging, which some sapient medicos consider the legitimate mode of treating Rheumatism, these Pills sustain and cherish; the animal forces, invigorate the constitution, and thus act as the allies of Nature in her efforts to cast off the disease. Their medical action is direct and specific. It reaches tho materUs moxibi or radix of the disorder, through aU the complications of nerves and fibres in which it is entrenched, and expels from the blood the febrile principle which feeds, and spreads, ej\d intensifies, while-it spreads the fatal-ten* dencius of the malady. : ’ ; Caution—Bewnre of Counterfeits!:!
