ZT Taut-omas. Smanian Casa—A Leer CHILD.—On the 14th of November hurt, Mr. Aaron . Coburn, a conduct tor on the State road, discovered, on the arrival In Philadelphia of the train from Pittsburgh, that a female child, about three and a half years of age, had been left in the saloon of the ladies oar. The child had gone through from this plade under the charge of a woman who claimed to be its aunt. After some difficulty he traced the lat. ~, ter to Bloodgood's Hotel, in Philadelphia, where he took her into custody and had her and the child both conveyed to the Mayor's office. The woman was rather tall ; she was dressed in dark clothing, and had an exceedingly genteel ap pearance. The child was eery healthy lot ing, and was plainly though comfortably clad. Beth N ike woman and child were unmistakeably Eng lish. Mayor Conrad questioned the woman, and the substance of the story told by her to his honor, was as follows: Her name was Alice Greener, she was a nu Live of England, from whence she had come in the . steamer City of Philadelphia, and was wrecked in that vessel off Cape Race. She subsequently reached Pittsburgh, whither she was bound to visit her slater, Jane Watson. She had left Pittsburgh on the 18th of November for the pur pose of sailing to England in the City of Man chester. The obild's name, she said, was Mary Ann Watson; she was the daughter of Wm. and Mary Watson, who lived in Philadelphia. Wzn. Watson, the father, she stated, was a laboring man ; be had met them at the care and taken the child in charge, but subsequently deserted her. This part of the story was an absolute falsehood, as it was ascertained that no person whatever bad met them at the cars. The Mayor discharged the woman, and he did so, directing that the child should be sent to the Poster Home in Buttonwood street, near Broad. ' After the arrival of the child at this institution, It betmme very evident that she had been accus tomed to a more luxurious life than a laborer's child might be supposed to have enjoyed. She frequently told her playmates what fine clothes she once had, and at the table she asked for fruits and ether luxuries, and more than once expressed disappointment at the absence efts eert. On a recent occasion some visitors went to the institution In a private carriage. The child saw the latter drive up, and clapping her hands in great glee shouted out, " Here comes my mamma in her cerrisge; now I will go home I" These oiroumatances, and many others, render it certain that the child has been well roared, and-the probability is that she has been stolen for some object. It is possible this account may be of some interest to persons in this quarter. COURT OP QUARTER SZSSIOAS.—Before Van. William B. M'Clure, President Judge; Ga rid Adams and William Boggs, Associate Judges. FS/DAY, January 26. Yesterday was the last day of the present term of Quarter Sessions, and the Court was os oupied ia the disposal of a number of tippling house cases. Bowen-. 0 , 5,9 committed to jail, yesterday, by Alderman P dkinson, on a charge of forgery preferred against him by J. G. Backofen. The prosecutor, it appears', was acting as an agent for Frederick Hartzell, in which capacity be re ceived sums of money for him from Germany. Bowman, being aware of this circumstance, went to Backofen, and represented himself so authorized by Hartzell to get $l2, for which amount be gave a receipt bearing Hartzeil'e name. Backofen discovering afterwards that the receipt was a forgery, had him arrested and dealt with no above stated. Doris . MIROANTILE COLLEDE—The only char tered institution of the kjed in Pennsylvania. The reputation of the Principal as an author, as .an eXperienoed teacher, and as a practical accountant, is known, not only in this comma 'nity, but throughout the country. Mr. Wil liams, the professor of penmanship, is equally distinguished in his profession. He has some near pieces of off band work which will excel all his former productions. Call and get a speci men of his splendid business writing. Many of his pupils say they would not take what they paid for their whole course of study, for their improvement in penmanship alone. OHIO AND PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD.—The SD noel meeting of the stockholders of this Com pany was held on Thursday, at which the reports of the different officers was read. The report of the President a tales that the Company loses $95,628 00 by the failure of Gen. Lorimer. The following are the names of the Directors elected for the ensuing year : Wm. - Robinson, Jr., Alto gheay ; Jas. Marshall, do ; John Bissell, Pitts burgh; Thos. Scott, do.; Z. Street, Salem, Ohio; Arnold Lynch, Canton, 0.; G. W. Bally, Woos ter, Ohio. ollava UP NOR Loosz."—The reporter of the Dispatch-appears to have been hard up for local yesterday; and to make an item, insinuates that the robbery of the watch we published on Thurs- day was "coined" We might convince 10m of the genuineness of the item by an introduction to i the person upon whom the robbery was perpe trated; but as we know the gentleman possesses other valuables he prizes very highly, it would not be right on our part to place him in danger of losing them, by putting him in such close juxtaposition with the local of that paper. NNW PATISTS ISSIILD.—Wo observe among the patents issued for the week ending Jtnuery 28, 1855, the following: Isaac Williams and Isaac W. Bauman, of Al legheny county, Pe.—For improvement in cotton Ned planters. Leopold and Joe. Thomas, of Allegheny City, Ps..—For match machine. Shan non, Esti., Prof. Locke, of Cincinnati, Mrs Mary D. Locke and Sarah Mahon, for defamation of character. The damages, we understand, are laid at $lO,OOO. Nor Coanscr.—The Johnstown Echo is not correct in saying that ao engagement has been effected with the celebrated actress, Miss Ince, by the Brelsford Thespian Society, of that place. We are informed from the beat information, that no such arrangement has been made with her; she commences a second engagement at our own Theatre, on Monday next. DIDIONANT.—The citizens of Mansfield, or a portion of them, appear to be very highly in oenned at the Onio and Penneylvania Railroad Company, and lately held an indignation meet ing to denounce the course pursued by it. Re solutions were passed oomplaing very bitterly of the mleserable accommodations for Ulla reception of freight and the inefficiency of the agent. SZNITNCED.—The three members of the night watch, woo weritconvicted at the last term of Court, of cue larc::ny of $225 from Wm.
