'rTlOl democratic vote for Mayor Guthrie has been increased since last year nearly two hundred votes. This shows the increasing popularity of Mayor Guthrie, and, although ho has not been elected, he cannot but feel gratified with the high . .testimonial of esteem his fellow-citizens bay - tendered him. We have no doubt bat the successful candi date feels happy over his triumph. He ho p s a right to feel so, and Mayor Guthrie mighttex claim, "grant let me call him, for he conquered me." Ills election is a triumph; not over the democracy, but over his own party. It is well known that the Gazette and the American ware bitterly opposed to him. They never published aneditortal line in favor of him, and wherever the editor's of these two papers bad an _oppor tunity to his hopes, they did not let it pass. Prawns toot place'on-Monday morning, at the hoUse of Mr. Am i ga, in Andover. A correspondent ofthe New York. Herald elates that the attendance was large eithrMzing many of the citizens of Andover, the professore and students of the seminary, and qrfite - a number of the family relatives of Gen. Pierce from this city. Thii.remains were enclosed in a rosewood coffin, lined With white satin, and ornamented with sil ver Binds. The corpse looked very natural, the face wear ing a pleasant expression. The head was Bar -irounded with a wreath of laurel ana.white.roaes, one of the leaves qj which partially concealed a . -scar on the forehead. On the lid of the coffin were two prettiy wreaths of labrel and white roses. The Rev. Mr. Parker of Concord, at whose church Mr. Pierce and his wife are regular at tendants officiated. The services consisting of an address, prayer and singing.- . At &alma one o'clock the remains were con veyed to . Concord, in a special train, for burial. The place of interment at Concord is decided by the same correspondent as a small, oblong plot of ground, inclosed by a plain iron fence, per haps twenty five feet long and ten wide, shaded by a weeping willow and skirted by those bushes and snow berries. A little white monument, of pyrimidical shape, perhaps three feet high, stands in the enclosure. On one side of it is the follow ing itiscription':— FRANK ROBERT, Son of Franklin and Jane M. Pierce, Died, Nor. ri, 1842, aged 4 years and 2 maim. "A Rived and precious treasure, Mat to tra here, but mare In .., the Redeemer's care." th* the reTerse is inscribed aimply the word— "Transplanted?' , Adjoining the enclosure is another of similar size; surrounded by a continuation of the same iron fence, prepared by Gen. Pierce's direction. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company have made arrangements for laying the second track from the town of Patterson to Lewislown, a distance of 12.valles, and a large number of workmen are - already engaged in laying the rails. We learn that the Company have commenced work at different places along the road, and in• tend extending it the whole length of the lino as soon an they can make the necessary arrange ments to do so. It is the intention of •the Company eventually to run a double track the entire distance between Philadelphia and PittsbUrgh. The question as to the best mode of connect ing yopr road with' the Pennsylvania Railroad, in the city of Pittsburgh, is one which seems re• cently to have arrested a considerable share of public attention and discussion, and having giv en it Drone reflection; it may be proper for me to state -here, that I consider both the modes proposed—by a high bridge over the Steamboat channel, betew the month of Flaw Mill Ban, con tinned with a descending grade to the point, at the_ junction of .thullionongahela and Allegheny Rivera—or by bridging the 'Monongahela a short distance above the Suspension Bridge at the foot of Smithfield street, and continuing the road on the bed of the old canal through the Grant's bill Tunnel, to the Pennsylvania Railroad, at the Canal Bridge, in Liberty street, as entirely prac ticable,.and when it becomes necessary for your Bonid to decide what plan you will adopt, the comparative merits and coat of each mode of connection, will be carefully and fairly presented for your consideration Your road having the eame. maximum grades, and minion= radii of curvature, as the Pennsyl vania Railroad 'west of the Allegheny mountain will, when completed and connected with that Road, eitherat the foot of Liberty street, on the lifoncmgabels, or M the Canal Bridge in the city, form:Lite main continuation westward. The Ohio Legislature at its session in 1852, having removed the restrictions in regard to gunge, or width of track, herctoforo prevailing under a general law in that State ; and the Sten benville and Indiana, and Columbus, Penns and Union Railroad Ciimpanies - having. engaged to bring the 4 feet Si inch guage from the Western line of Ohio, to the River at Steubenville, and commenced layingdown their track of that width; it would seem to be the true policy of your com pany to adopt theßame gunge which prevails on the roads with - which yours connects at either end, thereby avoiding tie vexations breaking of guage, to which all other lines of Railroad, cros sing Ohio from East to West, are subjected. The roads west of Ohio, in Indiana and Illinois, all having the 4 feet si inch gunge, while those in Ohio are 4 feet 10 inches, except the route above mentioned, from Union through Columbus to Steubenville, which wits have the 4 feet si inch track, the same as the Pennsylvania Roads.— Your Road may therefore beregarded as the last link required to connect Philadelphia with St. Louie, by a continuous line of track of a aid forte guage, on the shortest and easiest practica ble route, and being the only route across Ohio possessing this advantage, it must and will, after its completion, continue for all time to be the main through route from Philadelphia to the great Week In% letter recently published in the Railroad Journal of the let inst., Mr. Puck er, President of the Reading Railroad, a-gentle man of great practical experience and observa tion, has estimated each break of guage, as equal to fifty miles additional length of road. If this rule, which is believed to bo mainly correct, be applied to the several routes leading westward, across Ohio, the comparison will stand thus : From Philadelphia; to St. Louis via. Ohio an 4 Pennsylvania Beltefon tallow and Indiana, and other con- Electing roads, as Peroomparative statement, in last report to your company Add for break of gunge at Pitts- burgh, and at western line of Obto, 50 miles each • Total Phila. to St. Louis via Pittsburgh and Steubenville, Steubenville and Indiana, and other rgads of tame gungo as per same' state ment Difforence iu favor of your route 128.toiles, &comparison with- ttie route betweenihe same points by way of the Hempileld, and Central Ohio and connecting roads will stand thus : - Philadelphia to Bt. And if the gradients, total ascent and descent, and eurvature;on the ilempfleldqpnd Central Ohio Raods, 11/3 compared with your route were taken Into account, and the distances accurately equa ted—the difference:Mite favor would appear much greater. . As the shortest route from Philadelphia, through Pittsburgh to Cincinnati, your route will have an advantage of from 36 to 44 miles in distance, as shown in our !Mt report, over any other line making or projected: These comparisons are not made with a view of disparaging the merits of either of the routes referred to. , orb reflect upon the judgment, or qualifications of those who selected them.. ,The incalculable productions and unbounded resour seed the great west, towards which are all reach togethcr with the vast amount of local traffic .atid freight, to be accommodated along the res. :peotive lines, will doubtless afford ample bust- TIM for all; and enable them to make dividends Officiently large to satisfy the most exacting etookholdera. IN THE UNITED STATES.—The Economist says: " By recent scientific researches on the part of Peter ?L'Browne, Esq., of Pennsylvania, it has been established that the United States can ontrival the world in wool as in cotton. Thus, Spanish sheep, yielding natural wool 2000 to the inch, carried to England, degenerated to 900 to the inch, and brought to the United States re covered to 2,100, or finer tban.the original. The fact being once established that our climate and soil produces finer wool than other countries, will give to our manufacturers inevitably the supe riority in cloths, if the manufacturer is allied in his interest to the grower." 979 miles 1070 miles 951 miles BANK DIVIDENDS.—We learn froM the Louis villa Courier that the Bank of Kentucky hail de clared a semi-annual dividend of 5 per cent.; the Bank of Louisville of 4} per cent, and an extra dividend of 2f per cent.; the kforthern Bank of Kentucky of 6 percent.; the Mechanics' Bank of 6 per cent; the Farmers' Bank of 6 per cent. upon the capital stock paid in before the Ist day of July last, and in the same propor tion upon payments subsequently made; the Farmers' Insurance Company of 10 per cent.; the Madison Insurance Company of 10 per cent. 100 ~ 951 .. TIIE JOHN NIMOND9. We find the following detached account of the explosion on the John Simonds, In the Louisville Courier, of the Bth: Yesterday afternoon the mammoth steamer -Tito. Simonds, while in the act of rounding out from the Portland Wharf, collapsed the fleet of one or two of the boilers, and created tho greatest consternation among the crew, several of - whom jumped overboard and wore drowned. The crew, soon after the disaster, were mustered,' and out of thirty six men but twenty eight were found, and it is feared that the missing men were drowned. The boat left the city wharf for New Orleans, and had landed a pilot and others at 'Portland, and was just getting under way again when the floes collapsed, with a loud noise, and the boat was Instantly filled with steam. Ono or two per eons were seen to jump overboard, when the New Albany ferry boats went alongside and endeavor ed to tow the boat to shore. They could not stem the current at all with her, but the steam er Falcon from New Orleans, soon came up and towed her over to New Albany. Mr. Bradley, of Lexington, was on the',boat, with a lot of blooded stock, including Maria Black and a Wagner colt. lie says the water from the boiler swept the deck like a deluge, washing his bay and feed overboard, and wetting his horses and his ostler as thoroughly as if they had been thrown in the river, and yet strange to tell they were entirely uninjured, the water be ing almost cold. A drover with a lot of sheep, was also on the deck, and escaped with a show er bath, and being knocked down by the force of the water. The force q the explosion wont out of the after end of the boilers, and Mr. Bradley thinks tifat more than one exploded. The mate was, oovered with mud; coal, ant and water, but was apparently uninjured. The Doctor engine was greatly injured and broken to pieces. We did not learn of any one in the cabin be ing hurt, and have no way of accounting for the accident. It wee evident that abe bad plenty of water in her boilers, as the deck was flooded with it. The Simonds was an entire new boat, built last year. It will require come time to place her in running order again. We learned late last night that no lives were lost:, and the boat wiR be folly repaired in a day or two.
