By the census re turns, it is shown, that in the period mentioned, ' - - -- the'area of the United States has been extend ed from 2,056,168 to 3,221,595 square miles. • Great Britain, exclusive of Ireland, contains -84,000 square miles. The extent of the United 'Slates is therefore 95 times as great as the Island of Great Britain. France contains an area of .197,400 square tailes—a territory less than one fifteenth of the size of that of the United States. Austria, including and the Italian de -pendendiii, contains:llia. 800,000 square miles. ' %mai is tile only nation which exceeds the United States in extent of territory. She has, -including her immense Asiatic possessions, a territory of about 4,000,000 square miles. The :171,t01e of Europe contains only 8,807,196 square miles, which exceeds by less than one-fifth, or 645;600 square miles, the territory of the Uni ted States. In population, the growth of the United ,States is no leas extraordtnary. The total _population on the let of June, 1850, was . "..28,246,301.. The absolute - increase from Ist- of 3nne, 1840,_had been 1,176,848, and the actual 'Matisse per cent. is 36,18. Deducting for popu , lation acquired by additions of territory, and the relative increase after this allowance is found _ to.be 35,17 per cent. The aggregate number of whites in 1850 was '1'3,619,866, exhibiting a gain upon the number of the same class in 1840, of 5,428,871, and a relative increase of 88.20 per cent. But -excluding the 168,000 free popula tion supposed to have been, acquired by the ad dition of territory since 1840, the gain is 5,- - 270,371. and the increased per cent. 87.14. The - number of slaves by the present census is 8,- 198,298, which shows an increase of 711,085, - , - „eqtmtt4 - 28.58 per cent. If we deduct 19,000 ,for the probable slave population of Texas in =lB4O the'result of the comparisonwill be slight- The absolute increase will be 692,- 085, and the rate per cent 27,88. The number of freCcolored in 1850 was. 428,68 7 18 40 , 386,215. The More - ask , of this class has been 42,892, or 10.95 per cent. From emigration, the increase ofpopulation in the last ten years, was 1,739,182, which - , deducted from the amount of white population above given, makes the-in crease 8,689,169, and the rate per cent. is re duced to 25.95. There is probably no country -in the which exhibits so great a growth. Kossuth at, that place; but as our tele graphic despatches have anticipated all the im portant matter contained in the letters of our correspondent, w.e dean it advisable to omit their publication. gga, We learn from Harrisburg that the Bill incorporating the Girty's Bun Plank Road Com pany in_ Allegheny county has passed both branches of the Legislature. REOEPTIOR OP OOV• KOSSITTH Gov. Kossuth will arrive in Pittsburgh to—mor row (Tuesday) January 20th, For a full account of the arrangements that have been entered into to receive the illustrious Magyar Chief, we refer the reader to another part of this paper. From the spirit that , prevails amongst the great mass of our citizens, we have no doubt that a brilliant reception awaits the patriotic Hungarian. The Kossuth festival will take place at Ma sonic Hall, on ?fouday afternoon, at 3 o'clock— the doors will be open at 2 o'clock. We learn that the Hon. A. W. LOOMIS will preside on the occasion, and will deliver an introduotory ad dress. We are requested to say that tickets for the festival can still be bad of the committee, at Philo Hall, at prices ranging from $3 to Sre We would advise those who wish to hear the elo quent champion of freedom speak, to procure tickets at once, as they will soon be all sold. Every dollar received by the festival committee will be handed over to Gov. Kossuth. We would suggest to our citizens, and to the different societies, clubs and organizations, who design giving substantial aid to the Hungarian cause, to prepare their donotions and addresses at once. Let the workmen in the various shops give to the extent of their ability, even if it is but a dollar, and appoint committees to wait up on Gov. Kossuth and present their mite to the good cause. Every dollar will assist in putting an end to tyranny and oppression g, We regret to observe that two ur three palters, in Pennsylvania. assuming to be Demo cratic organs. devote a large portion of their columns to retailing the abuse belched forth by the Whig journals against Mi. liocuasan. The The Harrisburgh Keystone, is especially devoted to this dirty work, and permits no opportunity to pass that will give it a ehance to be the mere conduit of Whig slang and slander against Mr. Buchanan. la its issue of the lath, we find the following paragraph copied from the Juniata Sentinel, a Whig paper, which the Keystone ex peas should have a great effect upon the Demo cracy of the State: .' The Register has hoisted the name of that distinguished old federalist, James Buchanan, for President, and parades in its columns a long list of names as officers of the Buchanan club of this place. How many of them are Buchan an men we can't exactly say ; but we'll bet our old boots against the Register's common sense, that we can chalk the hats of at least a score of those who are made to figure in the proceedings who are not half so anxious to see Mr. Bnchana an the loco-foco nominee as we are' However, when a man haat not bona fide strength with his party, a little buncomb should be charitably ex cused. Huzza for Buchanan! we're forhini—roe ..8o drive ahead, gentlemen—plaster his federalism, endorse his democracy, oil his joints, lubricate his spavins, and trot him out !" We do not ooject to, although we regret that any Pennsylvanian, calling himself a Democrat, should oppose Mr. Buchanan, but we do detest the base and malignant feelings that could im pel pretended friends to indulge in such low vul gar viturpuration against a Democrat who is loved by the whole people of his own State, and esteemed by the country as one of its greatest statesmen. A man who has represented his na tive State in every legislative position; who has represented his country abroad with distinguish ed credit, who guided the diplomacy of the coun try through one of the most brilliant wars re corded in the history of nations, and on whose private worth there is not a spot or blemish. Such a man might very naturally, be abused by the Whigs, but that any one pretending to be a De mocrat, would stoop to copy their low flimsy. slang, Is a proper cause for wonder. But there are guerilla sheets in this State, that are willing to do the filthy work. Whether they are em ployed and paid by the Whigs for doing it, or whether their irate political dishonesty prompts them to it., we cannot say, nor do we care, but we would warn the Democracy against these prowling wolves, who, under spurious covering, are attempting to destroy the party and leave the country in the hands of the Whigs. Disreputable as is the course of the Keystone, it is decent compared to that of the Lonectiterian. The editors of that paper appear to be in a per fect agony of blackguardism against Mr. Bu chanan and every many who cannot be reached by the means that induces it to attempt to create discord in the party. They will of course fail in their effort to distract or annoy, but viper ' like they will continue to bite the file. ~• get,„„ There are those who feign to discern tautology in the speeches of Kossuth, and de clare that he deals mevely in words. We have -read mast of , his Speeches, (says the Pennsylva. nsan,) and if our judgement Incorrect, never yet discovered aught but the most profound statesmanship. His efforts abound in sublime argument, beautiful imagery and startling elo quence. He speaks bp inspiration, each thought leaping from his lips, as if impelled by a heart of tire. It is in vain to search for his Jiving equal ; and since he is so great in a foreign dia lect, what must be his power in his native lan guage. Truly, his are the "thoughts that breathe and tho words that burn." His speeches will never be forgotten. They have created a new taste for oratory and eloquence—a standard to which rising public speakers will be emulous to approach. Nlarylatati in the eighth In point of importance, the entire capital invest• ett by her in this branch of manufacture being $2,236,000; number of Min& employed 3022 ; and entire value of product, $2.120,501 The N. Y Evening Nat says : The practica bility of making the finest wines from the Amer ican grape is no longer an open question. We have seen and tasted some manufactured by Judge Powers, of Catskill, from his celebrated vineyard on the banks of the Hudson, which with sufficient age would deserve to rank with the beat Madeiras. The Judge has confined his experiments pretty much to the Isabella and Catawba grapes, from which, since l84:4, he has manufactured several thousand bottles. When properly matured by age it will have one advan tage over the best of imported wines, in not be ing adulterated or poisoned by any foreign mix ture. The vineyard in which these grapes are grown lies on the side hill immediately north of the steamboat landing at Catskill It has a fine exposure to the sun, which lavers the perfect ripening of the grape, so necessary for the mak ing of highly davored wines. Horrible Accident In Centre Street--six Another of those fearful casualities which are more frequently the result of individual rash ness than of any uuforeeen cause. oceurred yes terday in Centre street. The calamity is in some features so like that which happened at the Ward School in Greenwich avenue, that it is almost impossible to believe in its occurence, so soon after that terrible disaster, and while the warning it gave was yet so vividly impressed upon the public mind. The seen° of the casu - &lay is an emigrant boarding and lodging house in the rear of No. 140 Centre street, where a large number of emigrants, too poor to pay for better accommodations, are crowded together. We understand that there were at the time of the accident no less than five hundred persons in the building. It appears that a large portion of the boarders had just retired for the night, when one of them, an old woman, alarmed by the tolling of the fire-bell, raised a cry of fire, Imagining that the building was in flames. Her terrorrapidly com municated to the other occupants in her apart ment, and thence to the inmates of the whole establishment, who rushed in confusion from their rooms to the stairway. Some succeeded in forcing their way into the street, or some other place of safety, while the larger number, crowded as theywere in the narrow stairway, were unable to effect their escape. The scene that followed, so closely resembles that already alluded to in the Greenoh avenue School, that a description of it would be nothing more than a repetition. Those on the stairs, unable to maintain their position against the in creasing pressure from above, wore forced clown on the landings until their bodies lay piled up on each other. In this way the life was literally crushed out of six persons, and a still larger number were so seriously injured that their re covery is doubtful. Those killed are nearly all children. The fol lowing are the names of the dead : 1. John Glennan, a boy, aged 12 years. 2. John Wm. Dalton, 8 years. 3. An unknown boy, 8 or 10 years. 4. Mary Swillingham, 18 years. 5. English fires and English coals were the best things we saw—we were actually blockaded by the weather. At length we em barked: the crew were shoveling the deep snow drift off the deck, so we rushed below into a cabin whole bulkheads were beautifully var nished, sofas perfect, sky-lights .olosed, the whole atmosphere tobacco. We were off, gliding past the Seraglio Point, which was swathed in snow, and looking like a man in summer clothes caught in a wintry storm.", THE HATNGAILW! FUSD.-^•Catalil:U3 M. The lowstate of the tides and the floating ice novVbstructing they navigation, renders the progress of so large a vessel up the bay and river a matter of some difficulty. A violent gale from the north-west prevailed yes terday morning at the Breakwater, and during its height the Pittsburgh lost both of her anchor. She was, however, secured by the two towboats, which remained alongside of her up to last even. ing. They were expected to start for the city as soon as the gale moderated.—Phil. Ledger, Jan 13.
