Route to eniffornia' , 14y: Wilamtin , W. =M$--arranged by"hS COTECESEIM"-7Wehave received . - - some very interesting :mantuiripts entitled as akove, winch we shall`preeent to'the readers of the Post in a day or. two. The Washington Union , of Wednesday last, - contains an account of the sayings and doings of liossuma, which occupies six close columns of paper, Amung other items it mentions that he was well received by .the• Governor of Gibral t far; end, during his stay of nine days at that pus., saw all that was worth seeing on the rock. "At Cadiz he landed, along with his Secretary but was not noticed, except by the British and' American Conards...i At :Lisbon the police hesi tated about his landing until they got authority from headquarters. Permission was immediate ly greeted, and he took up his abode at the Bra gauze, where he received a kind invitatian from saidanha, and was waited upon by Das Antas and hundreds of the liberal party. Just before sailing, a deputation came on board, and pre sented Jim with a complimentary address ; and one of the iron steamers, dressed in colors and crowded with radicals, followed the vessel down the Tagus, cheering till their throats were hoarse. At Vigo, Kossuth, lady, and children landed for an hour, unnoticed, except by the British Consul." We extract from the same account another pleasing incident: As Kossuth was entering Winchester, accom panied by a multitude of excited people, "in the main street a man—a working man—stepped *forth from the crowd and tendered Kossuth a glass of ale, which the latter gracefully accept ed, and drank to the prosperity of the city of Winchester." Thus we see that the mere appearance of the hero, a word or two dropped from his lips, and one of those graceful acts of courtesy which are so natural to him, are sufficient to dispel the murky cloud of distrust and suspicion which the friends of tyranny would have gathered around him. America will not be less generous than England. The Texas Rio Bravo, of the 22d October contains an account of a bloody conflict at Matamorai on the previous day. Gen. Cara vajal, at the head of - the Liberators, (who nun bared about 1000 men to whose ranks daily ac cessions were being made,) had appeared before the toviri' on the day - bell:ire' trieliatiK - iiiidteck U,ssessionfof..Fort , PAradesoiiialtizi : %; Where ° he established his head quarters. On the morn ing of the battle he divided his troops, and one column took possession of the Garita, or guard house, and the ferry opposite Brownsville—the other advanced to the rear of the town. A heavy fire of cannon was opened on both lines from the batteries of Gen. Aisles, whose command at Matamoros consisted of 500 men ; which was briskly replied to by. Caravajal's single brass cannon, under command of Capt. Wheate. The liberators boldly advanced into the town and were soon engaged, almost hand to hand, with the enemy. A fierce and determined struggle ensued, which lasted till night separated the combatants. A short time before sun-down, several companies of Caravajal's sharp shoot ers, had forced heir way through -walls and other impediments, up to the main Plaza of the city, where they picked off Avalos' gunners and riflemen and silenced most of his guns. Night coming on, Caravajal withdrew his troops till the next morning, at which time the combat was to have been renewed. This was a sharp and spirited battle and resulted in a considerable °loss of life. On the side of the Liberators, two were killed, and about a dozen were wound ed, some of them severely. On the side of Avalos, about fifty were killed, and about the same number wounded. Among the wounded are Avalos himself, shot through both legs ; and several of his °Mere were also wounded. From the Connecticut Courant, we lean" that the British Anti-Slavery Society have sent over to this country one of their paid emissaries, to lecture the people of the New England States on the subject of slavery. The Courant very prop erly remarks, that " Mr. S. had better attend, in the first place, to the condition of the op pressed in his own country, who are infinitely worse off than the slaves here ; and then to the fact that, if he wishes to put down slavery, it is rather his duty to go where there are slaves. South Carolina or Mississippi would be a much better theatre for his philanthropic exertions than New England or New York. He would be then in the line of his duty." tiere is another matter that is naturally pre setttea\for reflection by this announcement i—it is the brave ? doctrine of non-intervention, that has lately been so warmly eulogised by the con aervative leaders of this country. What shall be said of the lioispittles calling themselves citizens of the United States, who shall justify British interference in our institutions, while they deny to a freeman of this country the right to buy with his own money, here, what he pleas es, and either take his property, so purchased, or send it, to whom he pleases? New and Dangerous dounterfetts The -N. Y. So neatly are these notes executed, that within a few days past, about 600 of them were received at the Suffolk Bank, and about $1,500 of the same kind have been passed among the brokers of Wall street- New Counterfeit $5 notes on the Philadelphia Bank have made 'their appearance. They are letter " A," variously filled up. The general appearance of the note is good. The medalions and the faces of the females in the' vignette are imperfect Two commas between the names of Underwood and Bald and Draper & Under wood," are omitted. The dots between the words " Five—Five," on the upper and lower margins are oblong in the good notes, and square in the counterfeit We are indebted to the editors of Bicknell's Reporter, for the following description of a new counterfeit. Lancaster Bank, Lancaster, Pa.. l's Re-issue relief. The generally appearance of these notes is capitally calculated to deceive the unwary, though the paper is somewhat different from that on which the genuine are printed—the lat ter being white tinged with pink. The engrav ing, as a whole, is quite defective. The figure in the Vignette has but three fingers on the left hand. So also the female on the left part of the note, who has an arm round an anchor—her right hand is minus a finger. Aboire this figure is a female whose right arm rests upon the tap of the anchor; in the genuine her neck is bare whilst in the bad note there seems to be two or Three strings of beads around it ; her right arm is very badly engraved and is indistinct ; in the genuine it is perfectly formed and quite as distinct as any other part of the engraving: The names: of the Engravers, Tappen, Carpenter, Casileas & Co., poorly done. Perhaps, had the Democratic party looked to, mere talent alohe, other men tnightliavd been selected to grace these distirty gthshednffices •to some greater extent, but nor where could be fount • two men better qualified for theirpost by , their unbending integrity of character, united with their natural talent and great practical experience in life. In all the re+ lations of life these brothers'have, proved'.tbieni i selves meritorious; and net the least of their good qualities is that of their steadfast and de; voted love for Democratic principles: But connected with the history of these broth! era, both as yet young men, our mind involuntai rily recurs to some reminiscences of scenes ass°• elated with our early, days, with which these brothers were intermingled. We believe it was in the year 1828, in the nity of Pittsburgh, when we were.= apprentice to the printing business in the office of John McFarland, (an enthusiasti4 Democrat, with first started Gen. Jackson for the Presidency.) that a poor, ragged,. forlorn look ing boy, of about fourteen years of age, was taken in more from pity than anything else, to learn the printing trade., His brother, if we re collect aright, soon after arrived Pittsburgh, equally destitute, and, we believe, also got em ployment, in some humble capacity, about the same printing office. Two more destitute boys could hardly be picked up anywhere. But al though poor and friendless, they were upright and industrious. They learned the art and mys- tery of the printing trade. John Bigler, when of age, remained in Pittsburgh mostly engaged in following his trade. For a time he edited and published the Pittsburgh Morning Pose, and Weekly Manufacturer, a paper started by our self in, 1828, making, however, but little money out of the enterprise. He afterwards was engaged ins small country paper in the State of Illinois, with even less success ; and finally quite penniless he, man for! lona hope, emigrated to California in 1848. His brother William when arrived at manhood, took another coolie ' 'wholly different to get along id the world. Hardy and industrious he turned his attention to the lumber business and from the smallest imaginable beginning in the world, he soon rose in his rough profession to be one of the leading lumber and raftsmen of the Susquer henna river. Perhaps in the same employment he also learned a useful lesson in politics; (in which matter he is now considered and adept, by some, people,) as any man, good at con structing a rift, guiding or floating it always of .course, with the current, will intuitively catch a lesson that this is the secret also of con trolling mankind. Thepolitician—he will begin to reason=froth his vocation must always float his boat with the current, never daring to oppose or buffet-it, but simply guiding it in the smooth and deep channel of popularity ; always careful to avoid those dangerous political questions that form the snags, sandbars and rocks upon which his vessel may perish ifunakilfolly driven against them. At all events, without regard to cur rough metaphor, William Bigler is nowOovernor of Pennsylvania, the second greatest State in the Union, and his brother, John Bigler, at the itame.time, is the first Governor of California elected by the people. The guardian of all our mighty interests on the distant shores of the Pacific ocean. In the circumstance of their rapid rise to-envia ble distinction so much satolthe etill more itorortgdgc to their unaided exertions. No Wealtliy or titled rela tions—no official Influences or powerful friends, carried them forward in despite of themselves into public distinction. To their own strong and undaunted hearts that quailed before no obstacle —to their own clear minds and good judgment, and to their trill' ingtmads that never shrank from honorable labor—do they owe all their present elevation in the world. Auseful lesson truly, to those who would desire to rely through life upon their own efforts. Our short episode in regard to their history of these brothers, now the Governors, by the votes of the people of two such mighty States as Penn sylvania and California, would not have occurred or impressed itself upon our mind, if we had not an idea that in the history of the two Biglers, volumes of encouragement to the young men of the present day could be found. After knowing their history, a young man of the present day, in any part of these United States, however, poor or friendless he maybe, should not despair in attempting to reach any thing, on which he places hie ambition and his hopes. Upright and laudable exertion, untiring energy and persever ance, may reasonably expect in this free country, where the right of all men are on an equality to accomplish anything within the range of human possibility. Nor need misfortunes for a time de ter or repress the man of genius and ambition, in his attempts at progress; but rather stimulate him to renewed exertions, for their very misfor tunes once surmounted 'net as real benefits in guarding the man of wisdom and watchfulness against like recurrences as far as in him lies for the future. We will be more than repaid for this short sketch of the Messrs. Biglers, if the outlines of their history, thus given, should stimulate a sin gle enterprising youth among our readers, to emulate their rise and progress in life. All young men, it is true, cannot meet the same die tinguished success, but we venture to say, that not a single one will ever make the effort to de serve it, without a full recompense for his exer tions in one way or another. The horse is a very fine spirited bay, docile in temper, and with an intelligent eye. When they approached near the Beene of the murder, the horse manifested evident signs of alarm and restlessness. Observing the singular conduct of the horse, Merriweather determined to give him the rein, and watch his movements. As he approached near the spot of the murder, he elevated his head and tail, and appeared to be watchful and fre quently uttered the snort so peculiar to spirited horses when apprehensive of danger. The noble animal finally smelt the ground and trailed the course which the body of his former master had been conveyed by his murderer. He finally reached the spot, smelt the ground and pawed and snorted. He then took a circle in the woods at a moderate trot, returned to the place where the body was found, and repeated the same cer emony. This he did several times in succession. And when reined up it was with great difficulty that he was forced to leave the place.
