FROM CALIFORNIA, NEw tonE, Oot. 4 The steamship Prometheus, from San Juan de Nicaragua, with three week& later news from California, arrived at Mir wharf about 6, P. M. She left San Juan on the 26th, and brings 465 passengers and $280,000 in gold dust on freight, $lOO,OOO of which is for Thompsolt& Hitchcock. The dates from San Francisco are to the 6th of September, and were brought down by the steamer Pacific, which arrived at San Juan del Sod with 220 passengers and $120,000 in gold dust. The North America left San Juan del Slid on the 20th ult. with 250 passengers for San Francisco; and the Gold Hunter left for the same place on the 21st. The Monumental City. also, left the same day for Realts and Panarna. It was'reported that the steam propeller La fayette had been entirely destroyed by fire in the harbor at Chagres, on the Set of September. Her cargo was partially saved. The scattered returns of the election in Cali fornia are rather favorable to the Whigs, who have carried every ward in the city of San Fran cisco, save one. The aggregate majority is 1000. Sacramento City and County are democratic by about 400 majority. The returns from the whole State are very incomplete. There seems to be very little doubt of the election of John Bigler, Dem., for Governor, although it is by no means certain. The Alta California of the 6th says:-80 far as relates to the remainder of the,State ticket, we think we cannot be wrong in saying that the prospect is much in favor of the Demoeratic candidates. Such is especially the case in the matter of the two Democratic members of Con gress, Joseph M.cCorkle and Edw'd C. Marshall. There can scarcely be a doubt of their election. The Legislature, so far, is in doubt, but will, it is thought, be Democratic. The clipper ship "Flying Cloud", arrived at San Francisco from New York in 89 days--the quickest trip on record. The markets are generally quiet, and inter rupted to some extent by the elections. A brisk trade is anticipated in a few days, it being about the season for the miners to lay in their winter stooks. The market was supplied in great abundance with boots and shoes, and clothing generally was very dull, from the great quantity in mar ket. The same also may be said of pork, cheese and a variety of other articles. The mining news is generally favorable. A great conflagration occurred at Marysville, on the evening of the 30th of Augnat. Three entire squares were burned, comprising 80 build ings. The locality of the fire was Second and "E streets, the North and East sides of the Plaza, the Levee, D and First streets and High streets. The lose is estimated at $500,000. The burnt district comprises the chief business part of the city. Parish, Adams & Co., were the heaviest losers—say $30,000. • The Indians are very troublesome on the route from the Great Salt Lake to the city of Sacra mento. The mail riders had been attacked sev eral times, but had escaped unhurt. Several emigrants had been killed on the route. Two men, named McKenzie and Whittaker, had been executed at San Francisco, and two executions had taken place in Sacramento, since which, perfect quiet has been restored. Robinson, who had been reprieved by the Governor, had been executed by the people. We have dates from Astoria, Oregoi, to the 27th of August. Mrs. Elizabeth Gaines, wife of Governor Gains, of Oregon, died on the 13th of August. The steamer Tennessee sailed from San Francisco on the 31st, for Panama, with $1,700,000 in gold dust, and the steamer Con• stitution with $lOO,OOO. The former had 250 and the latter 120 passengers.
