GLIDDONISI LECTIIILES Assyria's greatness as a nation, and the inva sions by its armies, are recorded so frequently in Ancient history, its oppressions of the He brews are made so prominent in the Bible, that there is no one possessed of education bat has read of that country; and yet the burial of its ruined cities and great monuments beneath vast mounds of earth, prevented, down to five years ago, any analysis of the manners and customs of that nation, or any correct appreciation of its history. The resnits * of the excavations 41 the-mounds by Layard, Botta, Flatrm, and Cciste, and the interesting facts which European scholars have thus established, are contained in books, plates, and pamphlets, to the generality of reefers at once rare and expensive ; the only exception being Layard's "Monuments of Nineveh," re published in the United States. Nor are such facts — tasty to become popularized, excepting through lectures. We are, therefore, happy to announce that the presence among as of Mr. GLIDDON, the well ,known - Egyptologist atuf - Archteological lecturer, has induced the Young Men's Libraiy Association to complete en ar rangement with him (prior to his leaving for New Orleans) for a course of three lectures, to be delivered on alternate evenings of this week, commencing to-morrow evening. A reference to the advertisement, but more especially to the printed programme, (to be had at the Library, Book Stores, and Hotels,) will afford fall par ticulars. Those of our citizens—and theta are many--who have heard Mr. Gliddon lecture on Egypt, ought to hear him on ancient Babylon, Nineveh, and Persepolis,—new subjects entire ly,—and they will not be disappointed. DEMOCRATIC MEETING A large, highly respectable, and very enthusi astic meeting of the Democrats of Lawrenceville and its vicinity was held on Friday evening last. The meeting was organized by calling S. H. Bea man, Esq. to the Chair, and appointing---- SNYDER as Secretary. Speeches were made by T. Howard, Esq., Col. S. W. Black, and IL S. fdagraw, Esq. Our friends appeared to be in the enjoyment of great good feeling, and high spirits, owing to the cheering news that we are daily receiving from all parts of the State. Let other parts df the State do as the West intend to do, and Governor Johnston will wish that his aspirations had been no higher than that of " a coroner, or a committing magistrate." He will curse the day when he left his old political-asso- Mates, to become the willing actor with those whose doctrines, if triumphant, would lead to the enslavement of millions of white men, even now struggling against legalised PRIVILEGES; a: majority of the supporters of which are pre . tending to great philanthropy towards another race, less numerous in our country; and of less consequence in our world, so far as human knowledge is enabled to determine. WHIGGEILY IS 1847. Four years ago, as now, there was nothing pure in Democracy—nothing patriotic that did not minister: to Whiggery—nothing faithful but opposition to the will of the majority ;—such, at least was cry of almost every Whig orator—such the assertion of almost every Whig paragraphist Then, there was one sentiment displayed on al most numberless Whig banners which seems to us to be peculiarly necessary, at the present juncture, to appear upon their banners, and to be contended for at their meetings. It is this-- "Protection, Reform, and ONE max !" for a Whig Governor. The People are every where saying that one such dose is enough for. them ; and the inscription upon their banner then, would be pecaliarly.appropriate now. Throughout the State the sentiment Of the following resolution was the prevailing Whig sentiment:— "Resolved, Thai 'we igitirci, the adoption of the ONE TEEM principle-as essential to the pure, faithful and economical `a,dniinistration of the tiviermmerit, and that Me.,lnTiterill *ha de sire ,6 a consummation so devotedly to be wish ed" to join with us in making r a one termer of Gov. Shonk."' _ This is the especial language of the Whigs of Blair cotmty; but many similsi. resolutions might be presented. What the Whip the called on the people to do, thEINCLSSCB, in every county, are' this year determined to do. The great body of the People think that Ws resolutioniif the Whigs, a t eh* time, ought to be adopted. Pa= PITISBUBaH :CidTbill?;li 6 The Harrisburgh, American—speaking of the result in 1848,--says that "THOUSANDS OF WHIGS did not attend the polls that election under the impression that the result would be as in times past—a Whig defeat. In 1848, Gov. Johnston was comparatively but little known.— Now, he is widely known." It was hotter for him that he was not known. At that time, when the Whigs of Allegheny county were called on to demonstrate their de votion to their party. , ticket, thousands flocked to the standard, and the air was rent with their shouts. NOW, in 1861, Allegheny County can soarcely raise a harm for Johnston ; and where thousands were seen in their political meetings three years ago, scarcely hundreds are now in attendance. This is the naked truth ; and the cause for this 'state of things is easily explain ed ;—Johnston has proved his devotion to Abo litionism ; and Whigs in Allegheny will no lon ger trust him. Though in political doc trines, the mass of them are pure patriots, and will stand by their country. tOW'It is said•that Mr. Owen, our Consul at Havana, who stood by and 'saw. fifty Americans butchered by the Spanish authorities, and made no effort to -Base..tbern,,or, auy intercession for delay, is a native of Wales, and what is more, is largely interested in property. in Cuba which h e holds 'under title from the crown of Spain..— No•wonder his soil did not burn with patriotic five the men who were butchered were not Ala itauntrymen• &mar Dzsmorio.—On the night of the 29th alt., the large factory of Bethel Moore, at G u lf Nuns, in Lower Merlon, Montgomery coun ty, took fire and was totally Consumed, together with a large stook of goods. We have done this, in order that the people may see a fair apecimen of the economy that has been practiced by Wm. F. Johnston, from the first moment of his advent into public life, up to the present time. This railroad was projected with no other design than to benefit certain owners of coal lands, among whom we believe, was that arch political imposter Thad deus Stevens, whose name will ever be remem bered in Pennsylvania as connected with the most disgraceful events in her history. We have not the entire history of thi., particular swind ling scheme before us; but our memory will not lead ns far astray in stating some facts in rela tion to it. The Gettysburg Railroad, familiarly known ae •' The Tapeworm," was to be constructed around the base of two or three mountains, and would be the means of communication betwoen GettysbUrg and various coal mines on the pro posed route. Its length, as well as our memory now serves us was to be about 18 or 18 miles; and the estimated expense of its construction something wore than a million of dollars. The State, in the times of unhallowed Antimasonic Whig misrule, was expected to father every il : ;liimate bantling of political prostitution : and egi this most infamous conception came in to claim such a paternity. Let any intelligent being look upon it and say that it could reasonably claim any consideration from an honest, practical bu, siness man, as a work that ought to be prosecut ed by the State: No such man has ever been found—no such man can ever be found. The vile deformity has been shunned by every one, except those who were directly or in directly interested in it ; and there is probably not an individual now to be found in the State, who asks the support of the People, who would avow a willingness to maker appropriation for enetr—urriatutiot. Yet this was one of the works projected in the Ritner administration ; and which was corn • meneed under the authority of the State ; and this is one of the works for which Wm. F. Johnston voted an appropriation that forms a considerable item in our large public debt. Let the reader remember that for this work Johnston voted appropriations amounting to four hundred and five thousand (almost i lialf a million) dollars; and that the People are now paying interest on this sum, without having ever derived one cent of profit from it. It is a dead loss to the State, from which nothing can be derived. Yet recol lect, reader, that this is one of the specimens of economy practiced by Wm. F. Johnston, the whig candidate for Governor. There are other things which we wish the People to remember—that he voted $76,000 to the Kittanning feeder ; remember that he voted $133,000 to the Sinnemahoning extension; re member that he voted $150,000 to the Danville and Pottsville railroad; remember that he voted $140,000 to the Laughlintown and Pittsburgh railroad, that was never incorporated ; remem ber that he voted voted $120,000 to the Norris town railroad; remember that he voted $400,- - , 000 to the Union canal ; remember that he vot ed for a bill appropriating more than THREE MILLION DOLLARS to State and company provements in one year, and that Gov. Ritner said that such appropriations would increase the State debt, in four years, to $46,000,000; lastly remember that if it had not been for this kind of extravagance by Gov. Johnston, Thaddeus Ste- 'yens & Co., there would have been no necessity for establishing a sinking fund. JOHNSTON'S PROSPECTS WHIG 'DOCTRINES AS TO IRE ELEC TION OF JUDGES. From the Harrisburg Telegraph of June 1851, re-published in the Pittsburgh Gazette of Jnly Bd, last : "The Election of Judges does 'not 'involve Party Inteisst& The Judges ought not, and cannot have anything to do with Party issues.- The are to determine private rights, and every man properly influenced by respect for our in stitutions will elect the names of the BEST MEN for the Judicial Office in malting up their ticket." In the Whig Convention which renominated 4ov. Johnston, Mr. Huffman, of Betka, sub mitted the following resolution: Resolved, That in the Election of Judges, Par ty should have no place. In questions which vitally affect the property, the liberty and the ives of the People, such considerations should ie discarded. If men are elevated to the Bench iy political machinery and party motives, they will feel that they owe their place to the influ ence and partiality of one political party in defi ance of the opposition of the other. The peo ple will be apt to suspect them of showing their gratitude, if not their revenge, by partizan •and personal judicial decisions. Nor is it at probable that such suspicions will be re- Every unprejudiced voter not interested in office holding or office hunting, will subscribe to the truth of the above, and will enquire into the competency of the candidates to fill the respect ive Judicial Stations, for which they are proposed. In such an enquiry, may there be room for an honest difference of opinion as to the qualifications of the others nominated in Allegheny county ; but there is one before the public, who has been tried in the posi tion to which he desires to be re-elected, "2o has not acquitted himself to the satis faction of the County. In one word WILLIAM B. M'Ctuna has been weighed in the balance and found wanting .' He has not upheld the Scales ofJus tice with that firm, decisive hand, which will re commend him to that high trust for ten years from December next. The evidence of this dis satisfaction may be found in various public doc uments of his produc(ion, some of which are here given. The first is from the charge in the Bailer's and Peddler's ooze, which reminds every one of the coarse fishwo man jeers and taunts of the noto- riotus Jeffries From the Commercial Jouroul of April 12th. " When in riots men thrust their wives and daugh ters as a shield to protect themselves from the well merited blows of the law ; MEN WHO HAVE THE MALICE OF THE DEVIL WITHOUT THE NERVE OF A• SHEEP; every honorable man ought to say, and I do say here, that such. creatures are CRUEL AND COWARDLY SCOUNDRELS, who do not deserve to have either wives or daughters ; and the beat punishment that can be inflicted upon them would be, that the same women, who by man's timidity have been thrust into peril should lash the rascals naked through the streets." It is the first time here, and it is to be hoped it is the last, where a Judge has or will assume the powers of a jury, anticipate their verdict, convict the accused himself, and sentence them with such jibes and mockery in his charge. • In the same paper, in Henry Kleber's case, the following outrageous provocative to murder is sent forth as justified by law : "When a man in this land strikes another with a cowhide, he should expect to drop dead at the fret of the assailed." If this were the law, our country would soon be filled with Vicksburgh bowie-knives and Cali- fornia revolvers, to be used whenever a man was struck with a rattan or switch; and even the children of our schools would undertake to pistol the pedagogue who would chastise them with a birchen rod. With what horror would such doctrines fill the weeping land" Of a piece with these suidical charges is that in which the same sapient oracle proclaimed, That words would ju.liffy an aBBaull ! and an cur- vault would junify a haticry In the case of the Bunk Beer Riot, this Solo mon ruled that where the prosecutor had invit- ed his friends to a House Warming, and wren them Beer without money or without price, it was competent for defendants to prove that the pros ecutor had no license to sell, but in charging the jury he told them, that, although he was still of that opinion, they nevertheless might dis. regard such evidence l! - 'o 7 n shall mention hereafter tht taunting in sult of his Honor to the Justices of the Peace, who under oath had returned divers bills to this same court, and compared its proceedings with common sense New York Democratic State Nomination■ The democrats of the city and county of New York assembled en maw, in Tammany Hall, on the evening of the 29th ult., for the purpose of endorsing the nominations made by the Demo cratic State Convention, recently held in Syra cuse, and approving of the resolutions passed by the same body.. At the eastern end of the room was displayed an extract from General Washington's Farewell Address, respecting the importance of the Union; at the westerly end a banner, inscribed with, " Strict Construction of the Constitution, National and State ;" and at the side the " Union of the Democracy on prin ciple—the Union, it must be maintained." Mr. John A_ Thomas was appointed chairman, and a number of Secretarier were appointed. The following resolutions were adopted with great unanimity :- 1. Resolved, That the democratic republican electors of the city and county of New York, ap prove of the resolutions adopted, and the candi dates nominated for State offices at the late Sy racuse Convention. 2. Resolved, That we are gratified to announce to the democracy of the Union, that the resolu tions of the Syracuse Convention were adopted without a dissenting voice; congratulating the country upon the settlement by Congress of the questions which have unhappily divided the peo ple of the several States, that deolaration of principle offers a pledge that those beneficent measures of adjustment will be maintained by the democratic party in all their integrity ; deprecating all sectional agitation, the country is reassured that the democracy of New York will discountenance any further agitation of the subjects embraced in the series of laws known as the compromise measures; expressing the unani mous determination of the democrats of this State to be associated with the democratic party of the Union in the ensuing National Convention to be held at Baltimore, and re-affirming our devoted adherence to the resolutions of the Bal timore Conventions of 1840, '44, and '4B, we present to the American people a sacred guaran tee of the complete fraternity of the democracy of this State with the democracy of the Union, united upon their ancient principles, and loyal to the constitution`And the rights of the States ; frowning upon all geographical parties or fac tions, whether formed at the North or South, East or West, and resolved henceforth to know but one enemy, and to strike but for one vic tory. The Evening Post, speaking before the meet ing, said—'The democrats of the city, who are at last thoroughly united here, as in the state will hold their ratification meeting at Tammany Hall. That there will be an attendance larger than the old wigwam has seen of late years, we need scarcely predict., and that the proceedings will be as enthusiastic as marked by the old and conquering days of the democracy, is certain.' . And the Herald of the following day, re marks—" The democrats held a meeting las evening in Tammany Hall, for the purpose of endorsing the resolutions adopted, and the ean- didates nominated by the Democratic State Con vention at Syracuse. The meeting was very harmonious and enthusiastic. The hunker and barnburner factions, which heretofore were so hostile to each other, met together on the same platform, and were as friendly as if they never had any disagreement." We are greatly pleased at this ; and hope, now, to see New York again assert her once proud position as a Democratic State. It is suggested that a colossal statute to James Fenimore Cooper be erected in one of the pub lic square% New York city. What is now the state of affairs ? We find William F. Johnston, the acting Governor of the State, oc cupying the degraded position of a public beg gar, according to the Whig doctrines of 1847. Yet there identidal lkkapiaki, who sought to de grade Gov. Sinn* in the estimation of his fellow citizens; are at this moment lauding Johhaton for acts that he had never performed ; and are willing to swear to the irtith' of all that 110 says. Such, unfortunately, is the character of most of the whig leaders,—whatever may be the post that they are occupying. A HEARTLESS REMARK The Hollidaysburg Standard says that when Gov Johnston spoke there, he tried to clear him self of the imputation of indifference, on ac count of not leaving the cars at Christiana, when he heard that the murdered Gorsuch was lying in the Hotel, by saying—"l was no Coroner—l was no committing magistrate-1 Could do noth ing for a dead man. If I had got oat of the cars and staid a week, Leonid have done nothing fox' a dead man I" And this heartless declaration was loudly applauded by the creatures who surround ed hum. We extract the . following notice of this cele brated woman from the Paris correspondence of the New York Express. This paper, it will be recollected, is edited by EXASITS BROOKS, Esq., who was editor of the Pittsburgh Gazette some three years, ago:_ The outline of the story of Lola Mon tes is well known, but her real character is not less generally understood. She is the center, here, of a large circle of admiring friends, consisting of the beaux esprits of Paris. She is a cherish ed member of the Artist's Club, composed of four hundred men of genius in every line of art. Lola Montes speaks nine languages fluently.— When the Nepaulese Prince was here, she was the only person in Paris with whom he -could converse. She is famous for her daring and dashing eloquence in conversation. Viewed as a man, with the latitude taken to themselves by the lords of creation, she would have claimed and won general admiration : as a woman, she is, of course, banished from the greater part of the sisterhood, and finds what consolation she can in the society open to her. She and her friends deny and denounce as false cthe gross libertinism imputed to her. How much of the irregularties of her career may be explained and extenuated by the adversities of a life, betrayed at the outset by a corrupt mother, and a base, brutal husband, it is not for me to say. At all events, while I make no apology for her, it is proper to state that those who know her declare her to be noble, generous and unselfish, even to a degree of romance. Arietta is ttbont sixty miles from the railroad at Amsterdam.— Piseco Lake is nearly surrounded by high hills and dense forests, in which bears and panthers are frequently killed, and deer are abundant. The opinion of Mr. Justice Edmonds, in the matter of the claim of the State of Indiana against the North American Trust and Banking Company, has been published in the New York papers. This claim, amounting to more than $250,000, originated in a sale of Indiana state bonds to the Company, for which the Company issued negotiable paper, payable at a future day. The State of Indiana founded their claim up on the consideration of the evidence of debt issu ed. The claim being disallowedby the Receiver, was referred by Chancellor Walworth to refer ees to settle the same, in the manner provided by statute. George W. Strong, Philo T. Ruggles, and Shepherd Knapp, the referees, reported i that the whole claim was invalid. The State of Indiana appealed to the Supreme Court—and Judge Edmonds now decides that the report of the referees shall stand confirmed. A NEW ARTICLE OF EAPORT.—The Liverpool Mercury says that "it is well known that the United States produce immense quantities of that most delicious fruit, the peach ; and so far as we have heard, none have ever been brought into this country. A gentleman on board the Africa has, however, made the attempt, and, with =some care, has succeeded in bringing them in a perfect state. He has brought them as a present to the family and friends of a gentleman farmer of this town, who may therefore claim to be the first importer of ripe peaches from the United States to England." Jenny Lind is living quietly at the Niagara Falls, on the British aide. She comes to our shores, almost daily, and is enjoying herself greatly, we hear. There are rumors of her coming to New York, ere long, to sing in opera. Madame Celeste, the celebrated actress, was to leave London, at last dates, for the U. States, having received a highly advantageous offer for a series of performances in this country. The Grand Offi cers, in full regalia, were on the right, followed bp the officers and members of the Blue Lodges, appreprintely attired in white aprons and blue scarfs,, When the procession reached the State House it was joined by the authorities of the city, com posed of the Mayor and Councils. By 12 o'clock the whole line had passed Independence Hall. The municipal body brought up the rear. . Six of the finest military bands of the city and county were effectively distributed along the line, averaging at least fifteen performers each. The number of Masons in the procession was about eighteen hundred. It was one o'clock, P. M. when the procession arrived at the College. Here the directors, of ficers, teachers and pupils of the institution, were in readiness to receive and welcome the Masonic fraternity and city officials. In front of the Eastern porch of the main building, a temporary stage was erected. A table was placed in the centre of the stage for the speaker, and immediately in front of it stood the bier, upon which was the coffin, containing the mortal remains of the deceased. On the top of the coffin was the regalia worn by the illus trious dead, in.the lodge of which he was a member. The appearance of the orphans, numbering upwards of three hundred, was a truly:heauti ful sight. The customary funeral ceremonial of the Order was observed—several of the high officers of the Grand Lodge taking part in it. The Orator of the day NE44PaBt Grand-taster Joseph B. Chandler. The citation was both pre ceded and followed by,‘ grand and solemn dirge by the bands. The kuriArce - remat t y was concluded by depos • iting the body of Mr. Girard in a sarcophagus in the vestibule of the College. The corpse was born from the platform in the lawn to the vestibuls by the Masons. The entire proces sion pasied by the tomb, following which came the orphims. Every Mason threw a sprig of ev ergreen into the tomb, so that_ the coffin was completely Covered by the sprigs: The solemni ties at the to were most imposing. After the obsequies, which were over about four o'clock, the Lodges passed out of the Col lege into the north yard, and again made a par tial circuit of the grounds. They then left the enclosure and returned to the IlalL The saroopagus is a neat and classical affair. It was designed by Frederick Graeff, Esq. The tomb rests upon a pedestal of the Grecian order of architecture. The design is very pretty, and the execution faultless. It is erected directly behind the statue of Girard by Gevelot. On the front is chiseled, in raised letters, the name .• Stephen Girard," and on the front of the pro jection of the pedestal, on which the statue stands, are cut the words "Who originated and endowed this College," in sunken letters. The sarcophagus is twelve feet long, six wide, and seven high. Its depth, with the cover on, is eighteen inches. The Witchcraft of Women want to tell you a secret. The way to make yourself pleasing to others, is to show that you care for them. The whole world is like the Miller at Mansfield, "who cared for nobody—no, not ke--because nobody cared for him." And the whole world will serve you so, if you give them the same cause. Let every one, therefore, see that you do care for them, by showing them what Sterne so happily calls, " the small sweet courtesies in which there is no parade, whose voice is so still to tease, and which manifests themselves by tender and affectionate looks, and little acts of attention—giving others the pref erence in every little enjoyment at the table, in the field, walking, sitting or standing. This is the spirit that gives to your time of life, and to your sex their sweetest charms. It constitutes the sum total of all the witchcraft of women. Let the world see that your first care is for your self, and you will spend the solicitude of the upas tree around you, in the same way, by the emanation of a poison which kills all the juices of affection in its neighborhood. Such a girl may be admired for her understanding and ac complishments, but she will never be beloved. The seed of love can never grow but under the warm and genial influence of kind feelings and affec tionate manners. Vivacity goes a great way hi young persons. It calls attention to her who displays it; and if it then be found associated with a generous sensibility, its execution is irresistable. On the contrary, if it be found in alliance with a cold, haughty, selfish heart, it produces no further effect . except an adverse one. Attend to this, my daughter. It flows from a heart that feels for you all a parent can feel, and not without the hope which constitutes the parent's highest happiness.
