Some years ago the Bostonians built the Northern Railroad, extending from their city through Albany to Buffalo,' for the purpose of securing the trade andiravel of the Lakes and Great West. The city of New York being thus effectually headed, the Gothamites immediately mil a Railroad up the Hudson river to Albany, supposing that they might thereby bring back to their city its lost business. In this, however, they were disappointed: hence they , were com pelled to build' the N. Y. and Erie _Railroad, as it is called, running on a direct lino through the woods to Dunkirk, the' nearest- point on Lake Erie. This new road . haesecured for New York whatahe failed to secure by the .4 eireumbendi bus" up the Hudson river. Pittsburgh is now in about the same position New York wns, short time since. The Cleve land, Columbus and Cincinnati Railroad has al ready taken from us nearly all the travel of the West; and now It is proposed by Philadelphia to not only make the Ilempfield Railroad to Wheel ing, but continue the same down the river to Marietta, there to connect with the 13elpre Rail road to Cincinnati, whereby our city will also lose the travel and business of the South-West. To avert so, great a calamity, .the citizens of Pittsbuigli• are now determined to give their money .towards making a Railroad to. Steuben ville, there to conneer with the Central Ohio Railroad to Columbus and Cincinnati. The Edi tor. of the Pittsburgh Gaztte, who is a citizen of. Allegheny City, and who is completely under the dictation and control of certain selfish Old Hunkers on that side of the river, is now making war upon the Steubenville Railroad, simply be cause it is a Pittsburgh work, intended to bene fit and build up this city, and increase its wealth and population. He is anxious for our citizens to abandon their favorite road, and make the feCireumbendibus " which will of Course benefit Allegheny City, and enhance the value of the 'propeity-of D. N. Warn and Wu. RomssOs, Jr. 'But the people of Pittsburgh are not so purblind as to be governed by the impudent suggestions of Allegheny speculators. Let the People, more over, nrcollect that those who are now giving it currency, know it to be a lie; but, like the worst classes of convicts who have served out their time in a state prison, they no sooner see an op portunly for practiaing their old arts, than they commence to do so withimpunity ; and if detect ed at once swear most lustily that they were not at the Place where the - offence was committed ; or, that they have never been branded as liars; or, that there has never been put forth a contra diction of their base charges. We want the People, eierywhere, to know, that the statement contained in the'Jirief extract we have =de is hs utterly arid notoriously false as the promises of Whig politicans are worthless; anti we would further . let the People know, that while they place any confidence whatever in Whig proles slims of principle, as putforthby State and Conn ty conventions, they will most certainly be hum bugged.. _ • Tat Ricker Krbro or BLOO3IERB.—The Cleve land True Democrat Bays: " One hundred and erixty tons of Lake Superior blooms, bound for Pittsburgh, were landed on our dock.
