S6r. Some years ago the Bostonians built the
Northern Railroad, extending from their city
through Albany to Buffalo,' for the purpose of
securing the trade andiravel of the Lakes and
Great West. The city of New York being thus
effectually headed, the Gothamites immediately
mil a Railroad up the Hudson river to Albany,
supposing that they might thereby bring back
to their city its lost business. In this, however,
they were disappointed: hence they , were com
pelled to build' the N. Y. and Erie _Railroad, as
it is called, running on a direct lino through the
woods to Dunkirk, the' nearest- point on Lake
Erie. This new road . haesecured for New York
whatahe failed to secure by the .4 eireumbendi
bus" up the Hudson river.
Pittsburgh is now in about the same position
New York wns, short time since. The Cleve
land, Columbus and Cincinnati Railroad has al
ready taken from us nearly all the travel of the
West; and now It is proposed by Philadelphia to
not only make the Ilempfield Railroad to Wheel
ing, but continue the same down the river to
Marietta, there to connect with the 13elpre Rail
road to Cincinnati, whereby our city will also
lose the travel and business of the South-West.
To avert so, great a calamity, .the citizens of
Pittsbuigli• are now determined to give their
money .towards making a Railroad to. Steuben
ville, there to conneer with the Central Ohio
Railroad to Columbus and Cincinnati. The Edi
tor. of the Pittsburgh Gaztte, who is a citizen of.
Allegheny City, and who is completely under
the dictation and control of certain selfish Old
Hunkers on that side of the river, is now making
war upon the Steubenville Railroad, simply be
cause it is a Pittsburgh work, intended to bene
fit and build up this city, and increase its wealth
and population. He is anxious for our citizens
to abandon their favorite road, and make the
feCireumbendibus " which will of Course benefit
Allegheny City, and enhance the value of the
'propeity-of D. N. Warn and Wu. RomssOs, Jr.
'But the people of Pittsburgh are not so purblind
as to be governed by the impudent suggestions
of Allegheny speculators. '

Col. Bigler and tht...lEall.cloodng Act of
The liarrisburg Daily American, a paper edi
ted by a brother of Governor Jottssrort, originated
the charge that Col. Bioiracast his vote in favor
of the law of 1847, which prohibits the use ofthe
jails in this State for temporary safe-keeping of
fugitive slaves. To give a coloring plausibility
of this charge, the journal of the State Senate,
was referred" to, and a garbled extract made
here from by fraudently fixing to the proceed
ings of the Senate on /mother 6111! And out "of
ithis maliciously contrived fraud beta been ••spun

"On motion of Mr. Smith and Mr. Levis, the
Senate resolved into Committee of the Whole,
Mr. Anderson in the chair, on bill, No:1123, from
the Howe of Representives, entitled an Act to
prevent kidnapping, preserve the public peace,
prohibit the exercise of certain powers hereto
fore exercised by judges justices of the peace,
aldermen and jailors in 'this Commonwealth, and
to repeal certain slate laws. After some time
the committee rose, and 'the chairman rdported
the bill - without amendment. •
"On motion of Mr. Smith and Mr. Carson, said
bill wns read the second time, considered and
agreed to; and - -
"On motion of Mr. Smith and Mr. Overfield,
the rte was dispensed with and said bill was
read a third time and passed. Ordered that the

The next business recorded on thti same page
of the journal 'aa the abeve, was . the considera
tion, "on , motion of Mr. BIGLER. and Mr. An-.
DSRSON" of a bill "in relation to the dutiki of
Cotinty Auditors in the County of Potter," and
a bill "relative to eleotion for Constables in

By. omitting the tides of the bills called up "on

substituting, with a, counterfeiter's adroitness,
"Fro.; &o.; &0.," in lieu thereof, it - was made to
appear to the reader unskilled in finesse, that
Col. Bigler's motion had reference, in some way
or other, to the jail closing bill! •
These are the •wiles which .distinguish' the
demagogue and his confederates, arid these are
thr weapons used by the allies of the abolition
ists to deceive the people. Col. Bigler• did not
vote for, the jail closing law of. 1847, and when
hia enemies falsely assert that he did; they are
only advancing one mote step in their career of,
baseness and' subserviency to a leader whose
habits lead him to pass by the fountains of a

that in New York State there are .472,151 dwel

an average of a littlemoro than six persons to' a
house—not a great degree of crowding. Never;
theless, there are' 04, 808 :?ainilies more, thin;
there are houses. In Maryland there are . 81,-
703' dwellings to '583,035' persona or a little
more than seveato each house. • There are r hir!-•
. ever, only .5,676 families more than' there'are
houses. The population of Maine is but 68
more than that of Maryland, while the number
of families i 5.16,403 more. A Maine family, on
an - average, consists of 563 persons. •It would
then appear.that more ottheliardy farmers aid:
seamen of that state contract - marriages, 'and
that they two'. less prolific than the people by
Maryland, or even of New York. • •• • •
In New York State, .46,651 deaths occurred
daring the year ending 1; 1860. • This i,B -
in round numbers, one to .every 66 persons.
Maryland there were 9,694 •deaths.or one to
every 60 persons. In Maine there was 7,646,

more healthy than-Maryland, and-Maine ahead
of both. We can well'understand' that:the pure

In New York there are 170,698 farms under

there are 21,860 farms or. one to 26

every 'lO persons. In thiti respect up!**
new State is ahead of the two old ones.
In New-York the number of manufacturing ea

It is worthy of notice in Maine, New York and'
Maryland, the number of white males•considera

excess is 40,000; in Maine, 11,009 and. in Mary
