From the spirit with which our people have,. now, taken hold of it, there can be no -longer a doubt of its immediate:success. We place, at the head of our columns, the call, for a public meeting, in favor of the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Rail Road to-night, at 8 o'clock, in the rooms of the-Board of Trade. Never, in the course of our experience of-a journalist, have wo inserted an advertisement in our columns, for a purpose with which we more deeply sym pathised, or inbehalf of which our whole heart's energies were, more earnestly enlisted. The advertisement, itself, says so much, in so short a space, and says that it does say, so directly to the point, that we need do no more, at present, than refer our readers to it. A.NOTEITiII CHALLENGE.—It is well known, that wbile the Democracy of oar State have nominated Col, John Bigler as a candidate for the Guber natorial office, the Democrats of Pennsylvania have nominated his brother, Hon. - Wm. Bigler, to the same office. In connection with this sub ject, we have received a paper signed by the fol lowing gentlemen :—J. C. Potter, S. B: Farwell, R. Scouten, Wm. Rogers, J. C. Johnson, J. L. W. Hurd, Edgar Mills, W. D. Williams and D..C. Lusk. - It comes to us for publication, in the shape of a challenge from the Democracy of California to the Democracy of the old Keystone State. The Democrats of our State, propose to present the Democrats of Pennsylvania with a splendidban ner embroidered with California gold; the whole to be worth not less than $l,OOO, provided Cali fornia throws a less majority for Col. John, in proportion to the number of votes cast, than Pennsylvania does for Hon. Wm. Bigler. This is a glorious challenge, and we trust the Demo crats of the Keystone will be on hand to take it up. We shall look anxiously for their respontie. We were shown, yesterday, an almost inter minable list of certificates from gentlemen of our City and vicinity, who hive been induced to try Mann's Double Lever Coyping Press, and we find that all accord to it the merit of being the most perfecemachine for thepurpose intend ed that they have ever used. We need only say, farther, that they may be had at all times of Mr. Jose F. Cam; of the firm of Covodo & Co. at the great Forwarding and Commission Ware house, Wayne and Liberty streets. • We have received the August number of this sterling and ever•welcome monthly. It is un necessary tor us to say anything in praise of this excellent magazine, as all who are in the habit of reading it know it to be the best work of the kind in existence. Hon. B. T. Conrad, It H. Stoddard, George H. Bober, Geo. D. Prentice, H. W. Herbert, and a host of other writers of merit, are ably represented in this number. It is also adorned with the following beautiful steel plate engravings: "The Fatal Letter," " The Tomb of Washington," and "Irish Courtship." $3,00 per annum. Fe hope our Whig cotemporaries, who ore so rabid on the subject of the High Tariff for Pro tection, will refer to their own President, pretty good authority we take it of their inconsistent course. Mr. Fillmore said in his annual mes sage : • higg tariff can never bepermanent. It will cause dissatisfaction, and wall be changed. Before the depar . tare for the United States of the French Consul General and this American special agent, notice was given to tlje Emperor Sonlouque that an at tack on the pee.ple of this republie would be con sidered as a (lei Aeration. of war against the three meditating pow ere ; but Soulouque, with his ac customed auda4 ity, has marched his forces and attaoked, in spite of this menace. • It is well kn wn, that if Soulonquecauld once I get possession tere, that the whites and mulat toes would be indiscriminately ,massacred.. A blockade will not prevent his attempt, as these s i Degrees care little about commerce, and have all the necessaries of life; with out any commerce whatever. It i only the foreign merchants, res ident, who will . suffer. ' The DominiosOus are now, prepared for the last battle, which is id.o deeide their fate, or put Port au-Princeand Nape Haytieu in ashes. Fuzz Ta.Anx.—The best andhappiest illustra tion of absolute free trade to be found in any part of the world, exists in these United States. Time was, when one of the States imposed tai es upon the productions of others ; this was mu tual "protection." But by the compact of the Constitution, all such duties were forever pro hibited. Louisiana and Florida being after wards annexed, the system of absolute free trade was extended to them. The an nation of Tex as widened still .farther the circle of freedom ; New Mexico and California still more: until at length more than half the population of the American hemisphere is included under a gener al system of absolute free trade. Of. the 81 States and half a dozen Territories embraced in this system,no one can impose taxes Upon the' commerce f any_ other. Trade is reciprocally and absolutely free. Were the rest of the world "annexed" to this Republic, free trade would be' universal, and "protection" unknown and impos sible. Has the system in operation hero,e., the system of free ' trade, the true " American system," (not the false one which generally pass es by tat name,) been successful'? Is it ap proved, admired and loved by the whole coun try? Is it not as well adapted to 31 States as to 18; and would it not be as well adapted to 100 States as to 32,—t0 the whole world as to half a Continent ? If not, why not ?—/Y. Y. Jour. of Corn. IMPIIIBONAIEFIT OF AN AMERICAN BY THE Aus law; GOVERNMENT.—The Berlin correspondent of the Boston Traveller, in a letter dated June 17th has the following : " No little excitement was produced in our midst a few days ago by the intelligence that Mr. Chas. L. Brace, of New York city, had been arrested in Grosswardein province of Siebenburgor, about 200 miles irom Pestb, in Hungary, on the 28th of May, as a spy and emissary of Kossuth and Ujahazy, 2d thathehad been thrown into prison. He managed by the aid of mercantile friends, to communicate the information of his arrest to the Legations in Vi enna and Berlin. Every step was immediately taken to secure his release. Mr. Barnard and Mr. Fay called upon the Austrian Ambassador and made. a fall explanation of the character and standing of Mr. Brace, and of the fact that he was traveling as an impar tial tourist in Hungary, just as he has been in eth er parts of Europe. An able paperwas also trans mitted by Mr. Barnardto Prince Schwarenzburg through the Austrian Ambassador here, giving such a clear statement of the facts in the case, that there is no room to doubt that Mr. Brace will be instantly released by order of this Prime Minister. I have seen a letter to-day, dated in Vienna, June 15th inst., in which the writer who is the private secretary of the Charge in Vienna, expresses the belief that Mr. Brace is in no dan ger." It appears by the Hartford Courant that Mr. McCurdy our Minister at Vienna, has written home a statement of the facts in this case. From the representations made to Mr. McCurdy by the Austrian authorities, it would appear that Mr B. must undergo a regular trial. Our Minister observes that be has been promised by the high est authority that nothing harsh or unjust shall befall him. An investigation has been made in Vienna, of his character and pursuith while there and that has been favorable to his final release: Ass Abolitionist at Fault. "I had a brother-in-law," said Mose Perkins, "who was one of the ravenest, maddest, reddest, hottest abolitionists you ever seen. I liked the pesky critter well enough, and should have been very glad to see him when he come to spend the day, fetehin' my sister to see mo and my wife, if he hadn't 'lowed his tongue to run on so 'bout niggers and slavery, and the equality of the ra ces, and the duty overthrowin' the Constitution of the Baited Slates, and a lot of other. things, some of which made me right mad, and the best part of 'em right sick_ I puzzled my brains a good deal to think how I could make him abet up his noisy head 'bout abolition. " Wall, one time, when my brother-in-law comes over to stay, an ides struck me. I hired a nigger to help me in haying time. go was the biggest, strongest, greasiest nigger you ever did see. "Black he was blacker than a stack of black cats, and jest as shiny as a new beaver ' hat. I spoke to him. "Jake," sez I, "when you hear the breakfast bell ring, don't you say a word, but you oome into the parlor and sot down right among the folks and cat your break . - fast." The nigger's eyes stuck right out of his head abought a feet! "You're a jokin', Mas sa," sez he. "Jokin'!" sez I, "Pm sober as a judge.". "But," sez he, "I shan't have much time to wash myself and change my shirt." "So much the better," sez I. Wall, breakfast time cum, and so did Jake, and he sat down 'long side of my brother-in-law. He stared, but he didn't j say a word. There worn't no mistake 'bout it. Shut your oyes and you'd know it—for he was I loud, I toll you. There was a fast rate chance to talk abolitionism, but my brother-in-law never opened hie chowder head. "Jake," said I, "you be . on hand at dinner," and he was. He.had been workin' in the madder all the forenoon—it was as hot as hickory and bilin' pitch—and—but I leave the rest to your imagination. "Wall, in the afternoon, brother-in-law come up to me, madder than a short-tailed bull in hornet time. . "Moss," said he, "I want to speak to you." "Bing it out," ser. I. "I hain't buffew words to say," see he, "but if that 'ere confounded nigger comes to the ta ble agin while I'm stoppin' here, I'll clear out." 'Jake ate his supper that night in the kitchen, but from that day to this I never heard my brother-in-law open his head about abolitionism. When the Fugitive Slave Law was passed, I thought he'd let out some but ho didn't, for he know'd that Jake was still living on my farm!" If you would be loved as a companion, avoid unnecessaryoriticism upon those with wom you live. The number of people who have taken out judge's patents for themselves is very large in any society. Now it would be hard for a man to live with another who was always criticising his actions, even if it wore kindly and just criticism. It would be like living between the glasses of a microscope. Ent those self-elected judges, like their prototypes, are very apt to have the persons they judge brought before them in the guise of culprit. Ono of the most provoking forms of the criti cism above alluded to, is that which may be called criticism over the shoulder. "Had I keen consulted," "bad you listened to me," "but you always will," and such short scraps of sentences may remind manyof us of dissertations which we have suffered and inflicted, and of whioh we can not call to mind any soothing effect. Another rule is not to let familiarity swallow up all courtesy. Many of 1/13 have a habit of saying to those with whom we live such things as we say about strangers behind their backs.—: There is no place, however, where real polite ness is of more value than where we mostly think it would be superfluous. You may say, more truth, or rather speak out more plainly, to your associates, but not less • courteously, than you do to strangers. • Earthquake at St. Louts, The Repubtan of the 3d says an earthquake was felt there the morning previous,—three dis tinct shocks, the whole occurring in about one minute.
