My purpose will be to show that it may be made to minister to our trade, and be of great benefit to tiia' friends of this iaiitiiontend, and are most industriously circulating a statement, that by this route, say from Greensbargh•to Wheeling, and by the Central Ohio Railroad Company to Co• iambus, Philadelphia is 55 miles nearer than by the route of the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad Company to . Columbus. Let us examine matters. In all •their onessided statements they omit.the fact, that Pittsburgh is only about 25 - migs from Washington, thus reducing the 55 miles gain through Wheeling; down to 30 miles. Then we find that the distance from Greensburgh to Pitts burgh, by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, and now building to be finished suet spring, is 29 miles• Now adding 29 and 25 together, we have 54 miles as• the distance from Greensburgh to Washington, via Pittsburgh.. Then taking the common route of the Hempfield Railroad to Wheeling as 30 miles, as so stated, will give as the distance from Greensburgh to Whieting, via Pittsburgh, say 84 miles, or tun miles, only longer than the Hempfield route, surveyed by Radian Knight, who, it is known, was interested in giving a very ft:arable report to the Hempfield Corn• .pang and Wheeling, with grades at 80 feet tit the mile, two wide rivers to be crossed by espentive bridges, and with a great uncertainty of their having the right to build them, unless elevated at a great height, say 130 feet above low water mark (as per Wheeling Bridge report), which will be a standard for all navigable rivers here. after. -In addition to this, Mr. Knight found that there would be five tunnels on the route, and a number of very short carves. Our Legislature granted charters to the Pittsburgh and Washington Rail road Company, and also to the Pittsburgh and Wheeling Railroad Company, to construct a road by any route to Washington, some two years ago, and these charters are now in full force. All that is required to obtain the charter,is to make a survey, and take a certain number of shares. paying thereon a small instalment. This fact seems not to be known by our Wash ington county friends; and as the Hempfield Company intend to solicit the vote of the county for a county subscription of $250,000 of stock, it may be worth our while to show them that it would be vastly more to their interest to invest the same in a road to this city. Washington wishes to have a connection with the Penne)+, vania Railroad by the best and cheapest route. She wishes this branch road to pay well, and yet carry her produce and minerals cheap and quick. By reference to the map wo find that the Chartiers • creek has its source south of Washington, and runs in a north-easterly direction, and empties into the Ohio river three miles below Pittsburgh. This Chartiers valley is a wide bottom, dotted all along to Washington with thriving farms, abound. ing in mineral and vegetable wealth, full of the finest bituminous coal, and very densely popu. lated. Now by this valley, and by the shortest route commensurate with a level grade, we pro. pose to construct our road to Washington. It is obvious that it would be a cheaply built route; but, say it costs $20,000 per mile, in round ! numbers, we have as a total cost for the road of 25 miles, say, $500,000, to include the grading, masonry, rails, freight and passenger cars, loco motives, &c., &c. Does not this sound better than $2,000,000?--and then compare the two routes.— Fhe one by Pittsburgh, they have the Pennsylva nia Raitorad finished, and our State Canal, and the proposed extentiao of the Monongahela Slack• water to connect with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad at Fairmount. By a connection here they Would avail themselves of the strong compo. tition of rival lines and routes, and it is by no -means uncertain, but what we will have a branch 'of the great New York and Erie Rail Road, thus ,trialsioo:anothm. route .and rival. to the others.— bef . sseeessitt or use taimild 52•MITer - oftseas ,lii4i,iteo.xpensive - road gain bat twa.tnitess ;ove r :Mother route, which has the immense ads *shutialteiff wealth and population, and in possas. elort of:the general trade. Let Washington corm. ty ponder over this; let her examine well Into the cost:and trobable profit of a nett parallel road. Aid what shall we say of Pittsburgh and Atte ghecy.couory. Is it not your duty and interest to co:Li:nem this road of 25 miles, to connect with' yoar neighbor. Let there be s unity of inter este. 'With the county subscription of Wash ington, say $250,000, or one half the amount, the balance ‘l,:uld be obtained along.the line of the road, or mortgage bonds at 20 years time be given. Then go to work, build she road, and while we are at it, our Wheeling friends will -have built their end of the Hernpfielsi Railroad to Washing toe, thus making a continuous route from Pitts. burgh to Wheeling, and from Philadelphia to Co lumbus, only two miles longer than from Greens. burgh, by a.rneaaured line, and fully eight miles shorter by equated lines. • But we had forgotten to speak of the probable business of the road. Some railroads in the East are built over mountains, only to carry coal, and do pay very handsomely; would it not be an item in our calcalations of profit? There is a continued descent from Washington to the Ohio, and coal cars would pass down, thus requiring hot little expense for motive power, &c. When at Pittsburgh, what a large market for sales, when compared with Wheeling or Greensburgh. It could be dampeOito canal boats and pass into Philadelplilaovithout transhipment—but this is one of the many' sources of profit. Had we not better keep min. Washington friends posted up about this road? this $250,000 would do the thing exactly.' Will our city papers take the matter-up, and send some papers out into . MEIN M=M IMIZZIEI =NM ... ~ ~ . . 4. 4 0 :t ENE From the Bv,tralo Ccuritr; May 2d Violent Gale on 'Xblr.a Warm Sronat.---Abolit 10 o'clock yesterday morning, the ivied commenced blowing a tremen dous gale from the South-west, which continued all day, frequently accompanied by snow, hail and rain In great abundance. ;All the sail 'craft which bad recently left port wore forced to run back before the wind, and our harbor presented through the day a moat excited appearance. Tbo water rose with the wind, and at noon ft was higher than It had been before since the gale of 1544,, a good part of the Bata tieing aubmerged, and. the swims sweeping over the whole length of the north pier all the at. ternoon. The new pier for.the Erie Basin was al most completely out alright for several hour,. The water receded gradually during the afternoon. The schooner Mount Vernon, from Chicago, load' I ed with Cora, was . unable to make the harbor, and' went ashore outside the south pier, opposite the Central Railroad Dock.' She lies in the sand, and Is not probably In much danger. The. Brig Montezuma was also driven back, and in passing up the Creek ran into the steamer Empire on her larboard quarter with her bowsprit, tearing up the steamer's deck and doing considerable dam age to het upper works. The brig was coesidera. bly damaged by , the loss of a portion of her rails and her forward rigging. The Brig John . Irwin had her jib and topsail car. ried sway by the gale, and also lost some of her deck load. Jost at dark, the Propeller Saginaw, returning to port, ran into the steamer Commerce and cut her down. The Propeller was considerably Injured. Several other vessels were more or less injured In their rigging and'upper worki by the violence of the gale, or by getting foul with others in the harbor.— Many of the canal boats in the Creek were also in. Jared by being jammed between vessels and the docks. Life ashore was considerable diversified through the day by fugitive ripe, boxes, sections of tin roof, fragments of awnings, and in fact almost every thing not securely affixed to the freehold. ladled considerable lots of real estate changed locality, much to the annoyance of weak eyes, Etc. Tun GALIL—The gale on Thursday was as severe as day that has occurred upon Lake Erie for a num ber of years. We have not hoard yet—(Friday morning,)—of any accidents, but we fear we shall before this paper reaches its subscribers. The steamers Diamond and Sultana rode out the storm in our harbor In safety—so did several sail vessels, the names of which we have, not learned. The Sultana came In Rom above tulle height of the gale. At three o'clock on Thursday we learned by tele. graph that a large portion or Buffalo was under water, and that much damage bad been sustained. We have not heard from Dunkirk, the terminus of the great New York and Erie Railroad, and the ,1 best harbor' , on the Luke, but when we do, if there la a timber left to tall where a storehouse or dock existed, we shall be much mistaken. Woment—lleads up t The Chicago Jouvusl gives a chapter on ladles , beads and if JIMMY LIND faablocs,” which the teas der will agree with us is a criticism nicely tapered oft: A large proportion orate ladies of New York have adopted the Nightingale's fashiona of lifting their hair above the temples, thereby giving the phrenol. °giant a peep as 'twere, behind the curtain of some very interesting localities. • 1 ' To some ladies,” says the New .York Mirror, "the style is quite becoming, bat to the majority of ladies it is decidedly otherwise, giving them a bold, barefaced look, reminding one of obstinate scow. licks' upon the Bides of their foreheads." There in another fashion, still more tryiog to a ta• dy's beauty. It is combing the hair backward over the top of the head somehow—we are not master of the artistica/ term, if Lucre be one. To make this at all tolerable, a style ahead differing as widely as .possible from Lambed Crane's, is requisite, and' then, it Is nothing but a Elegant° style after all, with no particular grace to racommeod it. In clothing Isis lady's taste, good or bad, more evident than in thedisposition of the hair. We have seen Eno beady so tied op like a corn husk, snd so brushed up and braided up, auto give one a painful impression merely to look at them. Others again, with beautiful locks rolled up and stowed away be• hied their ears, liko a trooper's portmaatoau on his saddle, and other, still, bat no matter—"handsome is that handeomo does?' and it makes not a hair's difference, how one tows her hair, if also only wears her hcart to thought place.
