Written for, the. Morning Post. RODE SIBTCRIE AND RANDOM THOUGHT& BY P. C. SHANNON ~-114:61.--Ittouth of the Ohio. Have you ever been at Cairo? -1. do not mean that old Cairo, which, seated on the eastern bank of the Nile, was once the metropolis of Africa, the second capital of the east, and the theatre of thewonders of Arabian romance; but that mod. ern creation—that famous‘paper city, whose beau ties still lie dormant in engraved embryo, and whose actual ltitbankmenta scarcely serve to pro tect the few, sad, miserable houses, and wrecks. of houses, which meet the eye of thetraveler at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers: If you have not been tbere you have most assur. edly missed a sight. It was on a Saturday, iu the latter part of No. fember; when our steamer, the George W. Ken deli, descending the Ohio with two large barges, heavily freighted, lashed to her sides, approached within view of this grand Caito, which ita pro.. jectors, in their golden dreams, fondly fancied would become a second Misr or mistress of the Western World. It was a soft, sunshiny aften noon, with. a slight blue mist spread, like a veil,. over the far-off,, verdureless forests. It seemed as if autumn, about to close his mournful task, was determined to bestow a mellow, softening bene. diction on earth, sky and Water. The southovest wind curled the bosom of the beautiful river into tiny waves, and away towards the verge of the horizon, numerous wild-fowls were beating their way, with untiring wings, ie Along that pathless coast, The desert and illimitable air." They were leaving, like ourselves, at the ap. - proueh of winter, their northern homes, and seek. " ing, soathwanily, the "Sunny dimes and cloudless skies," where the bold Frost-Kingdare not enter to weave a single silver thread, or to affix to the eaves pne row of_crystal pendants. As I stood on Beek and al:itched the receding figure of one of these winged stragglers, "Darkly painted on the crimson sky," could not help repeating the beautiful- lines of Bryant, "To a Waterfowl,"—among the sweetes t be has ever written; nor can I refrain from insert ing some of theM in this place. All day thy wings have fanned, Atthat far height, the cold, thin atmosphere ; Yot stoop not, weary, to the welcome land, Though the dark night is near. And soon that toil shall end; Doom shalt thou MIA a summer home, and rest, And scream anion, thy fellows ; reeds shall bend, Soon, o'er thy sheltered nest. Thotilrt gone, the abyss of heaven, Rath mall-owed ttp thy fonn; yet, on ray heart Deeply bath rank the lesson thou hast given, _ . And shall not-soon depart. He who, from zone to zone, Guides thrcrugh the boundless sty thy certain tllgh In the lona way that I must tread alone, Will lead my steps aright. Thera wan a tinge of sadness in my heart as withdrew my straining vision, and thought how many a gentle, bright-plumaged bird leaves her nest by the northern streams, to wander to the summer isles of the Caribbean sea, never, alas! to return to her old hannts. The shadowy van— courieis of approaching sorrow! how they some. times darken the quiet threshold of the heart, and frighten thence all its love lighted inmates! Onward, around the curve of the stream, with otir cabin frame work trembling and heaving with the pept.iip breath of the struggling power with in! Who cares for the grim, nearly deserted, un seemly frames on shore, which blur the face of natnre with their sad, unsightly proportions it is not of them that any body thinks, save, per haps, to , smile. See bow , the sun-tipped waves are beating time on the shores, in,the wake of our boat. Look ahead and behold the ever-moving panorama— the union of two mighty rivers. How beautifu ly and gracefully" La Belle Riviera " bends to -7; the giant embrace of the bridegroom! With what a gneen•like flow she carries in her bosom the tribd utes collected from a thousand mountain rills, a hundred creeks and rivers, and pours the rich of. ferings into the turbid bed of the Father of Wat. era. flere-are mingled the - cleat waters of the Loyalhtuma, on whose meadowy banks, at the distance of a thoneand miles hence, I have often been seated with the harvesters around the even. ing meal, under the ehade of sotne Wide.spread "/agar-tree." rliere, too, are waters - from the tront-laden Conemaugh, over whose mountain bed I have leaped at abound, when eager in the hunt, away ap in the gloomy depths and cool re• ,ceases of the lofty Alleghaniel, " Where the waving pine fiends low its crest, And the shading's dimly glide." And here are waters" which have almost kissed Lake Erie—which have come from Olean through a continuous channel of over 1,200 miles, through the lumber and mineral 'regions of Western Pa., sweeping bithe§moky City, with not one serious, natural impediment •id their whole course, except the rapids at Louisville. And here are waters which have been lashed into foam at the Falls of St. Anthony, and others which have risen in re gions of perpetual snow, away beyond the rolling prairies, and through the old primeval forests which guard the Rocky Mountains. They may talk of the "land of the olive and vine;" but what is the Arno or the Thames, the Rhine or the Danube, when compared with these noble, forest-skirted rivers? Castle-crowned banks . they -may have, and grand memorials of the old, feudal times—ivrclad rains of turrets and draw btidges, courts and corridors; but what are these things that they should be pointed out, so promi. nently, for admiration? They are merely eviden. ces of an old tyranny which. has not yet passed away—the massive relics of a serfdom, whose end isnot yet. Lordly poets, high born tourists, and aristocratical novelists; may, appropriately enough; write their praises; but it is a marvel why the writers of the people—they who seek for the greatest good of the greatest number—,have such a fondness for covering their pages with glowing descriptions of this nature. Thank hell. von, there are no old castles, no ducal palaces' to mar the beauty of oar river scenery ; for, to use the Ituognage of Emerson, " What are they all in their high conceit, When man : in the bush with God may meet*, 117' kfellow boasted hehad taken twenty-five drinks of whiskey at a shilling a glass, and he intended to inn tiro number up to one hundred before bed time. It appears that we were altogether mistaken when we stated that the Gazette had backed out from a controversy with the Journal, in rela. tion to the Scott movement The Deacon was only waiting until Riddle had blown off all his sur. plus gas and steam, so as to open upon him a heavy battery, that would be both terrifying and destructive! The leader of the Gazette, yester. day, vras the bitterest political article that has ape peered in that paper since Mr. Caere was its editor. Riddle must have winced under its powerful sarcasm. The article, undoubtedly, was the product of a clearer and stronger mind than that of D. N. White; but, as it was published under his name, be must be considered, in law, as its author. The interminable war of the houses of York and Lancaster, in England—the war of the White and• Red Roses, as it was call• ed—was not half so fierce as that now waged between these rival Whig organs of Pittsburgh. In this quarrel we shall not take sides, but we would not be doing our duty as a faithful chronicler of passing events if we allowed it to progress without informing our readers of the position of the belligerents. The Gazettes article is too long for re-publi cation in our columns, but we shall make a few 'choice extracts from it at present. It opens thus: "We beg to be excused tberefore,if we depart from our customary course, and step aside to CHASTISE THE BRAWLING AND INSOLENT BULLY, and ex hibit him in his true colors," This is followed by a column of such ex. pressions as: " frothy verbosity ;" " tawdy style, absurd logic and bad principles;" "long and eager pursuit of government patronage ;" " con science seared and blunted by long abuse;" . " steeped to the lips, at this very moment, in the basest and most abject Tylerism;" "blind, infatuated, self-see King;" " basely false ;" " cal umnies;" "thinly disguised begging ;" " sacriEce of alt manhood, of all true Whig principle ;" &c., &c, The concluding paragraph we publish in full: "And in due time, when the present incumbent has nothing left to give, or when all hopes of inducing him to follow in the steps of John Tyler have failed, as they assuredly will fail, then we shall see the Journal burro big for Scott as load as the loudest. It will then turn back and lift up the anchors which it is now quite care ful occasionally to drop, for use at a future day. But, ns it says, it is a long time to March, 1E53, and much may be given and received in that period therefore, for the present, hurrah for President Fillmore. The Scott men are hostile, the Gazette traitorous, the Journal only faithful, and withal poor! If the faculties of the Jour nal were not very much Peclonded it would at once per ceive that its thinly disguised begging, its sacrifice of all manhood, of all true Whig principle, render it almost impossible for the administration so yield to its importu nines, even though it were disposed, for the sake of / n il ! , to give the dog the bone he so p iteously whines We shall look with some anxiety to see wha sort of a plea Riddle will put in to this indict al- The Navy - Department, we observe, orders its advertisements to be published in the Cincin nati Enquirer:the Democratic organ, instead of in the Whig papers of, that city. This shows that the Department properly appreciates the value of the Enquirer as an advertising medium. We would not. be surprised to receive a similar order from Washington. The superior advantages af forded by the Morning Post as,ao advertising me dium are well knownin this community, and we presume are known at Washington also. We do not wish to supersede the Gazette as the organ of the administration—(would n't do it for the world 1)-but we certainly shalt not decline in serting the official advertisements of the Govern. went, if the are offered to us. The course pur. sued by the hungry Whig papers of this City in begging and boring for official patronage at Wash. ington, must disgust every sensible Whig connect ed with the present.administration. a::? The American, the Scott organ in Western Pennsylvania, attacks the Hon. Mons Halesrow, late member of Congress from this district, in the most ferocious manner—applying to him all sorts of epithets. From this we infer that Mr. Hamp ton declined cooperating with Biddle in the Scott movement, and is in favor of the reelection of Fillmore. While Mr. Hampton was in. public lite, we iook occasion, when duty required it, to speak pretty freely of his official acts and general conduct as a representative ; but now he is a pri vate citizen, and we think he should be let alone The attack of Biddle is not only ungenerous, bu brutal. It shows, however, the extent of the fam ily quarrel which prevails in the Whig ranks in this county. THE RAI/MOAB Dar:Yr.—We have already eta• ted that it had been decided upon to have the De. pot of the Pennsylvania Railroad on the triangular piece of ground, bounded by Grant, Liberty and Seventh streets. Terrific liencontrefvitif a Whale.* The following atatetnent of the exploits of a whale, and his attack upon a vessel, is abstracted from the protest of Captain Joseph Dias, of the whale ship "Pocahontas," of Tilsbury, made be fore the 11. S.Consul at Rio deJaneiro in January, 1851. It is said to be the second inatance known of a direct attack 013 11 vessel by a whale. The other was the ship "Essex" in the Pacific, which was. entirely, lost. _Capt. Dias, says, that on the 12th of December, 1850, in latitude about 30 deg. 47 South, and long. 48 deg. 35 West, at -5 P. M., saw h shoal of sperm whales off the lee bow, low ered two boats—the larboard boat struck, and had been fast"ls to 20 minutes and after the line was hauled in to the boats, which line the whale had sounded out, - in the attempt to lance the whale, she turned Upon the'boat and literally crushed it to atoms with her jaws, and all belonging to it, except the crew, who swam to the other boats— the whale all the time staying round the frag ments. The starboard boat came down, but pulled back to the ship, in company with the waist boat and two crews. After they came on board, and boats hoisted up, the vessel was squared in and ran for the whale, (which still continued about the place where she stove the boat,) fully prepared with lances, &c., ready to make a dart. In about fifteen minutes wore the ship's head towards the whale, having every thing ready to attack her, vessel on the lay. board tack, and whale coming to leeward of the ship. When •about two boats lengths off,-the whale rounded towards the vessel's bow and struck it with such force as to start one or two planks, and break one or two timbers on the star% board side of the bow at the water line, causing the vessel to leak at once at the rate of 250 strokes per hour. Under the circumstances the captain bore up for Rio, where proper repairs were made. He sailed again on his cruise, about the 10th of Jan. nary. Whether he will meet his old foe is doubt ful, but if he does he will give her battle. Hence our Ilea. denies, colleges, and public schools are the moat useful institutions of the age. They educate youth, who soon grow up to be men. When we say education is the handmaid of virtue", something more is meant than the acquirement of a knowledge of hooks, of the arts and !Maces, to which the entire attention Of youth is directed in school,. There Is a home education referred to— "the right education of the feelings, those valuable moral impresaions which are only acquired id a well regulated home." How often do we find a well. educated man who is not a well-bred man I He is licentious and unprincipled—he isscifish and vindic tive--he is rude and ill.tempered—and yet, withal, is a man of excellent attainments. Why is this? Ho has Veen educated at school, not at-home. He has not been instructed in the great principles of virtue from a parent's lips; he has not been taught magna nimity ormotive, or disciplined into forbearance and self sacrifice.
