The trade aod commerce of the country haTC manifested, ♦ymptoms of improvement during the past fortnight. Money is more abundant, and can be obtained on easier terms; and as the influx of specie from distant ports of the world goes on satis factorily, there is reason to expect that ere long wc shall witness a more prosperous trade, especially if nothing occurs to interrupt the gradual confidence which is oow'-taking place. The accounts from the manufacturing districts show a great improvement in the employment of operatives. Some few fail ures have taken place during the fortnight, but it is •pratifjing to be able to state that they ure of minor importance. The demand for most articles of for eign and colonial produce has been extansivc. The prices obtained are more remunerative, and Tom alt the indications which are observable in thecom ‘ mercial circles, wc mayprcdict the return of better and more jprosperoustimes. : ' k The Cotton market has been steady, although not active, since the departure of the last steamer. r During the week ending January 21, there was a ;roore extensive demand than had prevailed forsome time previously, and the sales amounted to 25,710 bales; Id the early part of the week there was a trifling advance ; but not being maintained, prices closed on the 21st, at rates nearly the same as list iqnoted. Since the 21st, the sales are limited ; but' •till prices are pretty steady. The total sales of the fortnight are estimated at about 45,000 bales. .We may just observe that for Bahiaa there is a fair demand ; and a moderate businessman been done •in Brazilian The imports continue light; and the * ;stocks on hand, us compared with those of last sea son, are much smaller; whilst the prospect is that they will continue so for some time. .
