Balance due last year, $557 34 By cash paid Treasurer, $l3O 00 •JOHN OWEN has since made the following Report : . Measured in city, 4,436,8b6 feet. Paid Treasurer, SGG 54 To the Select and Common Councils 'The Committee on the Wat-r Works.respectfl ly present the following -brief statemenrof their proceedings for the year 1847. lit -pursuance of resoliitions of Councils, contracts were made for about SOOO feet of main pipes to be Illid principally in the Fifth Sixth, Eighth, and Ninth Wards. Some of the , e - are laid, nod the re mainder are ready to be used as soon as the streets for which they are designed shall be graded, and th weather shall become sufficiently settled to ad mit of their being opened. The contracts amount to .$7.976 Soon after the memorable fire of April, 1845, it was decided to replace the four inch pipes in first, second and fourth streets with larger ones, but as there is now a full supply through the larger mains laid in the year 1846 on Giant, Water and Penn streets, the Committee do not believe there is any immediate necessity for the change, but would recommend that the connections across Wood street be made wherever they do not exist. About three months ago a flaw was discovered in each of the cylinder; at the Water Works; and it extended so rapidly in the right hand cylinder, as to render it necessary to replace it by a new one, and at the same time it was thought expedient to make some other alterations in the engines, which the Committee expec ed would render them more efficient, without materially increaSing the consumption of fuel, and it is believed t the left hand cylinder can be repaired alter the rjew one is put in operation, which is contracted tot be ready by the first of February. An appropriation has been made to defray part of the expenSe of this alteration, mahich will cost $4,400, but the balance will require a further appropriation by the next Council. Deduct commissions, lost rents, ullowan- Leaves nett produce $27,315 52 which exceeds the proceeds of last year about two thousand dollars, and from which, if the current ex• pemes and salaries, amounting to $10,911 40 be deducted, there will remain a balance of $16,404 03 towards payment of the interest upon the cost '.of the works, amounting by last year's Statement to $lO,BOO. There has been counted and destroyed during the past year, torn and defaced scrip to the amount of 17,000, which has been replaced by new scrip, 'agreeably to the various ordinances of Councils on the subject. As there is nos a considerable demand for real estate in the city, the Committee would recom• mend the sale of the lots on' the Allegheny River ,and Grant street, formerly occupied by the engines :and reservo:r, and the application of the proceeds to the redemption of the scrip issued fur the con struction of the works. I I The removal to the Allegheny Water Works of Mr. R. Moore, who has had the superintendence of the works from their commencement, wrui thought to r offer i'good opportunity for making a change in their I management, by separating the duties of superin- Ilintendeqf and engineer, thereby promoting their efficiency, and increasing the revenue derived from _them. In pursuance of the ordinance on this sub ject, it will devolve upon the new Committee, more clearly to define the duties of these officers, and to select a suitable room for the office of the works, which may also be used fiirthe meeting of the stand ing committees of councils. When , the contemplated reduction is made in the grades of Filth, Grant', Wiley, and adjoining streets, tt will bn necessary to lower the main pipes in that ! .vicinity several feet, which will be attended with! 21 considerable expense and hazerd, unless the work .shall be done with great care, and at a season when 28 -no danger can arise from the freezing of the water -SG' the mains. - • There have been in all 3888 feet of mains laid in 63 ;the year 1847. 64 , The Committee beg leave to refer to the accom- 321 "pan, ying etatements from the superintendent and clerk, for the.detaile ofreceipte and expenditures, the, ',position and size of pipes laid, and other particulars; I 38 and close their report by expressing their satisfac pen at the general conduct of those officers and the othei persons employed about the Water. Works, and their sincere hope, that this important improve ment may continue to increase in its advantages to. the inhabitants, and its productiveness to the City -Treasury. THOMAS BAKEWELL, JAMES T.
