Given under my hand at the City of waihinton, this twentieth day of November ! Anne Domini pie thousand eight hundred and fortpsix. ' • By the Prvsiderkt: J S. POLK. JAMES H. Ptt.n, ' • :Ming Office. , Conziiiissio.ner tf the General Land The lands eMbracid by the above proclaimed on , of the President of thi United States, contain many of the moat valtiabli 1011, mines actually opened and worked, which have yet been discovered; and from indications oh the sUrface, and experiments made in digging, it is believed that . many - others equally valuable exist, and may be ciploied at 'a trifling expense. I From !he great number of these mines it w uld be impraCticable to give an adequate idea of their character and location, without extending this no -1 tice beyond proper bounds. It is sufficient to state • that they are situated in the section of country i bounded on the Smith by the Illinois State line; on west, by the ?dissiSsippi river;. on the north, by a line drawn nearly, parallel to the south side of the Wisconsin riser, at the average distance of ten or , twelve miles therefrom; and on the east by a - mert. idian line passim , ' through the sources of Sugar Creek, the whole district covering a surface equal to about sixty full townships. All necessary fa cilities for transprirting the products to a market are afforded by the Nlississippi and Wisconsin riv ers. rod their tributaries, the Blue, Grant, Platte, Pekatonika, and other rivers by which the district is intersected. 1 The above district was explored by Dr. "Owen, I the geologist of the State of Indiana, under in- I structions from the Treasury Department, and in, compliance with a resolutiomof the House of Rep ! resentaaes, passed the t3th of February, 1830.- 1 The able report of this gentlethan, Published in .11844, with the charts and illustrations, (Senate 'document, .107; Ist Session, 28th Congress,) contains - precise information as to the location of each mine, /and shows, that in 1839, the lead mines of Illinois. lowa, and Wisconsin, though only par; tially worked, produced upwards of thirty millions pounds of lead, of which those in Wisconsin, it ;appears, yielded the largec proportion; and further, that the whole district; if properly mined, would yield one bundivil . and fifty Millions pounds per • ! annum. Particular lists of the sections and parts of sec tions to be offered at said sale, have 4eeti furnish ed to the register and receiver at _Mineral Point, together with rnans on which the location ot each tract is desigjiatedi ail of which will be subject to the aratpiaztig:i pf those wishing to purchase.
