8 lie Stmts, ' Nero ' Bloomfitt), Jpa. The Recent California Stago Rolibcry. The Sacramento Union, of July 20 con tains tho following particulars of the stago robbery in Nevada county on tho previous Sunday: When opposite Sheet's ranch, about five miles this side of Grass Valley, the stage came to a sudden halt. It was then about half -past 7 o'clock in the evening. Four men had suddenly stepped out from among the rocks or bushes, oach woaring a black mask, and levelling a double bar reled shot-gun at tho driver. Each was observod to carry a rovolver in addition to his gun. The stago was drivon by Bob Scott, who at first demurred to the propo sition to dismount. He was assured by one of the robbers that they meant busi ness, and that there was no time to waste in parleying, so Scott concluded to obey. Two of the men stood at the horses' heads, and tlio other two paid their respects to the passengers. At the suggestion of the other highwaymen, and through the per suasive powei of a shot-gun on each sido of the stage, tho passengors all vacated tho stage. There were in nil thirteen passengers. Among them Hrigadier General Charles Cadwalador, and, it is said, Senator A. A. Sargent. The passengors were directed to sit down on the ground, and were arranged in a row about thirty feet from the stage. Tho only weapon in the stago was a Der- jngor pistol in the pocket of General Cad waladur. The oflicer was too good a sol dier to give battle under the circumstances, and did not expose his artillery to tho enemy. " One of the robbers then took a position in front of tho lino with his gun leveled, from which ho could command one or all of the passengors, as necessity might re quire. IIo informed them that if they remained quiet they would not be molest ed and their property would not be dis turbed, but that it would be dangerous for any one to make any demonstration of ie instance. " The horses were unhitched from the stage and taken a short distance from the spot, while ono man guarded the passen gcrs another held the horses, and the re maining two directed their attention to tho treasure in tho stago. It is-generally uu derstood that of late years substantial iiou chests are constructed under the hind seats of all stages which are used to carry Wells, Fargo & Company's express matter. This fact the robbers of course knew, and they came fully prepared for the emergency having with tuoui a supply of both blast ing and giant powder. They used both, and put in a blast which shivered the chest to pieces, knocking tho lid through tho top of tho stago aud shattering the stage in other respects so as to almost destroy the body. It is reported that tho passen gers, sitting on the ground in such closo proximity to the stago, did not enjoy the fireworks very much, but none of them were Injured by tho blast. The robbers new found it easy to Bocure all the treas ure in the box. Having removed it to a convenient distance they hitched up the horses and loaded up the passengers and told the driver to drive on. The stage moved forward and tho highwaymen re mained where they were until space and darkness hid them from view. "The robbers secured $8,000 in coin con signed to the banking-house of T. Findley & Co. and several other sums consigned to other parties in Grass Valley and Nevada. It is conceded by all that these additional sums amounted to $1,000, and some re ports plaoe them as high as $4,000. Tho total amount carried off was not less than $8,000, and not more than $11,000. The robbers were not only masked, but they bad their feet nvu fled with socks so as to prevent the officers from tracking them, and esiiecial'ly from identifying them by the footprints of their boots. Notwith- standing this precaution ttie Sheriff and officers had traced the robbers some dis tance in the direction of Ophir Ilill. They found on the trail one mask, several car tridges of giaut powder, a flask of blasting powder and several percussion caps, all of which had evidently been thrown away." lUtlreud Accident, Chicago, August . On tho Chicago. Burlington and Quincy railroad, . near Napierville, yostorday, the locomotive of a passenger train ran lata the rear end of a stock train, smashing the calaboose into fragments and instantly killing Arthur ISriggs, conductor, aud a drover whose name could not be learned, and seriously injured J. C. Wagner, cattle dealer, of Af ton, Iowa. A brakenian and several dro ver were in the calaboose, but escaped with slight injuries. No one on the pas senger train was injured. The accident ap pears to have been caused by the neglect of the passenger conductor to notify his en gineer that the freight train wa ahead, and a curve hid the latter train from the sight of the engineer until two late to pre vent the collision.
