A gentleman of a waggish ' disposition was In search of a boarding-house, and finally came across one that, judging from its outward appearance, he thought might suit. He presented himself, inquired for the landlady, and In a few moments the buxom dame made her appearance. After a short conversation, he concluded he would engage, and ask to be shown to his room, as It was getting late and he was weary, and desired to retire to bed. Ilis request was complied with, and the land lady left him. Next morning, on his oom ing to breakfast, the following dialogue ensued : Landlady Well, Mr. Jones, how did you sleep last night t Mr. J. Bleep ! Why, I didn't sleep a minute all night, and nobody else could if they were fixed In the same manner I was. Landlady Why, Mr. Jones, what was " the matter?" Mr. J. Matter? Why, them confounded bedbugs up in that bed like to eat me up 1 Landlady (indignantly) Sir, do you know what you are talking about? Bed bugs, Indeed 1 I will have you to under stand, sir, that there is not one single bed bug in this entire house, sir. Mr. J. (interrupting) I am perfectly aware of that fact, Madam, but allow me to inform you that they are all married and have got infernal large families I Landlady You can leave my house, sir t You shall not talk in that way, sir. You are nothing but a growler any way. This morning when I gave you a towel to wipe your face and hands after washing, you had the impudence to toll me it wasn't clean, and, to my knowledge, every board er in the house wiped on it, and you were the very first one to complain. Gone Back on the Document. A short time since a colored man entered the ofBce of the Clerk of the county Court, in Virginia, and advancing to a table where the Deputy Clerk was busily engaged, he produced a marriage license for which he had paid the legal fee a few days before. " Boss," said he, poking the license un der the nose of the absorbed Deputy. "What's it?" was the impatient re sponse. "Boss," continued the darkey, "De lady declines dis document, and I otch it in to git my money back." It was a little consoling to the darkey to be told some men went farther and fared worse, but when assured his money could not be returned, he turned indignantly on his doublesoled pump and muttered as he made his exit, " Ebery-body's gone back on the document. Patriotic Bunkum. An old soldier writes : "The day before we left Camp Vredonburg, near Freehold, New Jersey, for " the front, " we who hold commissions had a little glorification in the woods near by where we made speeches full of wounds, drank toasts full of scars, and sang songs full of flags. We called on a young lawyer, an invited guest, to make a speech, which he did. He urged the young men evorywhore to enlist for the defence of their country. Some one, whose cups of wine exceeded his discretion, asked the orator : '.' Why do you not go your solf ?" The, young lawyer threw out his right band in spread-eagle fashion and said : " I love my country 1 I love her peaceful hills and dales ! In short, I love my country as well as anybody, and I am going to stay at home and enjoy it." The other day at dinner I Bat in . front of a stout old gentleman and his young wifo. I notice he always drinks Burgundy, which, being too strong for her, of course throws her off on to Croton water. Looking up sweetly, into his Burgundy eyes, I beard tho innocent young wife mur mur : . " Dear Hubble pet, can't you give me twenty dollars to buy a lovely duck of an Astrahan mull", which I saw in a Broadway window?" " Yes, sweetness by-and-by." " Yes, you say buy and buy, but, darling, where are the f 20 to buy with ?" , t2T A Bridget applied to the family of a citizen up town yesterday, with her clothes dripping like a water-spout. On being in terrogated as to her condition, she said she understood the lady of the house wanted a wet nurse, and she had come ready for servioe. t3T I say, old boy," cried Paul Pry to an excavator, whom he espied at the bot tom of a yawning gulf, "what are you digging there ?" A big hole," the old boy replied. Paul was not to be put off in this fashion. " What are you going to dp with the hole ?" he asked. " Going to out It up into small boles," rejoined "the old boy, "and retail thein to farmers for post holes." lyTho pioneer who was shot by an Indian through the crown of his hat had an arrow escape. KiP A country newspaper speakine of a blind fiddler, says : "Although he can't see be can saw." fW A physician advised Siduey Smith to take a walk on an emntv stomaoh. " Whose stomach ?" he asked.
