Cowa usually become addicted to kicking when heifers, from being milked by abusive milkers. I have never seen an old oow be oome a kicker unless abused. Instead of cows being averse to being milked when giving a large quantity, I have never found, it the reverse. When pasturage is good, and cows come home at night with udders distended with milk, our " down East" cows seem grateful to have it removed. Milking a heifer for the first time requires patience, for they will almost invariably kick. In such a case put a broad strap around her body, just front of the udder and buckle it up moderately tight, and so soon as she gets quiet for she may dance around a little at first, take your pail, sit down and go to milking, for she is as help less as a kitten. Do not attempt to use a rope instead of a strap, tor it will not an swer. This is a much better method.'than tying the logs, as it does not hurt the ani mal in the least. A few applications of the strap, with plenty of pationce and kindness, will cure the most obstinate caso. How to tiro w Lima Beans. A correspondent of the Country Gentle man says : For the past ten years we have raised them in great abundance in fact, have cooked none other for dry. The first year or so we found difficulty in ripening the beans, as we picked for the tuble as fast as they were ready. There are only two points, if observed, to insure success. Tho first is to pinch off the top of each vine when they have reached the top of the stake say six feet aud the second is care fully to Save tho earliest pods for seed. Many writers say that they must be plant ed eye down, &o. We never practice it. We put the ground in nice order, when it is warm enough, and plant as any other beans, four to a hill, and they generally all oomo. By saving the earliest for seod we have them nice for tho table three weeks earlier than at first. How to Water Horses. One writer says, never water immediate ly after feeding. I say that if a horse is thirsty always give him drink, and he will thank you (or it. I have often seen horses put in a stable at noon for an hour or two, and not eat a pound of hay or grain but looking wistfully for water, and then their careful owner, who would not let thorn have water when warm, will come and give them enough to kill, and ride or ririva flia remainder of the day on two buckets of water ananoroed. Ten chances to one his horse gives out with hira or gets sick before night. Now, I say. civethahnr. water if he is ever so warm : give him a swallow, rinse out his mouth and nostrils ; give him a bit of hay ; in a short time a nine more water, but nottoo much. If he is watered several times a little at a time until he is satisfied, he will not drink more than half what he would if you let him gulp it down all at once. Stone Coal and Roses. A writer iu tho Revue Jfortieole states that he purchased a very fine rosebush, full of buds, and, after awaiting their maturity, was greatly disappointed, when this took place, to find the flowers small, insignifi cant in appearance, and of a dull, faded color. Incited by the suggestion of a friend, be then tried the experiment of fill ing in the ton of the Dot around Ui himh to the depth of half an inch with finely pulverized stone coal. In the oourse of a few days be was astonished at seeing the roses assume a beautiful red hue, as bril liant and lively as he could desire. A Valuable Cow. Eli Dunlap, farming the property of Ellis P. Wilkinson, Londongrove, owns a cow which for its milk is quite a valuable ani mal. Cream from the milk of this cow was placed in a pan and churned in three minutes with a ladle when there was loft a pint of butter milk. The cream resem bles fresh butter from the churn. From one day's milking a pound and three quar ters of butter is obtained, from feeding on hay. Two quarts of cornmeal are also fed twice a day. This cow is a small and ugly animal very deceptive in appearance, It was raised on the farm of It M. Harvey, West Marlborough, Chester county. tTbe Rural KtrJ;Jorker aaye that when a horse does n;;c shed his coat at the right time in the Spring, his digestive or gans are out of order, and he is hidebound, and says : " change his diet, keep warm : Powdered sassafras, bark, powdered sul phur and powdered "salt of each, three ounces J powdered blood root and powder ed balmony--of each, two ounces ; oat meal, one pound j mix, and divide Into 13 equal parts, giving one part in his food night and morning. 1ST A single wheat field on a 'California farm contain 88,900 acre.
