It Is well known to all dairy-women of experience that butter, to bo sweet, re quires the cleanest and most dolicato band ling and care. A farmer's wife says: " Of all tlio products of the farm, butter is the most liable to be tainted by noxious odors floating in the atmosphere. Our people laid some veal in the cellar from which a little blood flowing out was neglected until it had commenced to smell. The teault was that the jar of butter which I was then packing smelled and tasted like spoiled beef. Another lady reader observed that there was a pond of filthy, stagnant water a few hundred feet from their house, from which au offensive effluvium would be borne on the breeze directly to the milk-room, when the wind was in certain direction, the result of which was, that cheese and but ter would taste like the disagreeable odor coming from that pond. As soon as the pond was drained we had no more damaged butter." Cider. A correspondent of the Now York Tribune says : " I will give two plans one of which will preserve the cider sweet or in the state owing to the condition it is in at the time the treatment is applied, the other is ap plicable only after the cidor has fermented. According to plan No. 1, one-fourth of an ounce per gallon of sulphate of lime should be added soon after the cider runs from the press. This can best be done by adding tho sulphate of lime to a gallon or so of ci der in a scparato vessel, and after stirring well pour into the barrel. Ten ouncos of this lime will be the proper quantity for an ordinary ban-el. Tho cider will keep in the condition it was at the time when the lime was added. This plan will - work equally well if the cider bo partially fermented when the lime is put in. It -docs not appoar to be absolutely neccessary to rack oil the cidor unless it is to be trans ported; in that case it should be racked in about ten days after application of the -remedy." Healthful Effects of Tomatoes. The tomato is one of the roost health ful as well as the most universally liked of all the vegetables. Its healthy qualitios do not depend on tho mode of preparation to the table ; it may be eaten three times a day, cold or hot, cooked or raw, alone, or with salt, pepper, vinegar, or altogether to a like advantage, and In tho utmost quan tity that can be taken with au appetite. Its healthful quality arises from its slight acidity ; in this respect as valuable, perhaps as berries, currants, and similar fruits. The tomato season ends with the frost ; if hung up in a well-ventilated cellar, with the tomatoes hanging to the vines, the "love-applo" will continue to ripen until Christmas. The cellar should not bo too dry, nor too warm. The knowledge of this may be improved to great advantage for the benefit of invalids, and of all who are fond of the tomato. How to Clean a Clock. When the clock stops, do not take it to the' repair shop till you have tried as fol low: Take off the pointers and the face ; take off the pendulum and its wire. Re move the rachet from the . " tick" wheel and the dock will ' run down, with ( great velocity. Let it go, the increased speed wears away the gum and dust from the pinions the clock cleans itself. If you have any sperm oil, put the least bit on the axles. Fut tho machlnory togethor and nine times in ton it will run just as well as if it had been taken to the shop. In fact this is the way that most shopmen Clean clocks. If instead of a pendulum the clock has a watch escapement, this latter can be taken out In au instant, without taking . the works apart, and the result is the same. It takes about twenty minutes to so clean a brass clock, and saves a dol lax. How to Brighten Straw Matting nud OH uotn. ' If you wish straw matting to keep bright you must wash it twice during the summer with salt and wator, say about a pint of salt, dissolved in a pailful of wain), soft water, drying the matting quickly with a soft cloth. The salt will provent it from turning yellow. ' . After oil cloths are scrub bed and dried, they sho uld be rubbed all over with a cloth dipped in milk. Those who .have not tried this plan have no idea how brightly the oolois will come out. To Make a Balky Horse More. A Texan once told us that he know of no siniplor and surer way to move a balky horse, than to place the hand over the nose of the animal and shut off his wind until he wants to go, then let him go. , , ti!"
