Joseph Herald gives the result of the applicatisn of hot wator and nshos to peach trees, to eradicate the yellovet: " The yellows, which have been such a bane to peach orchards, promises so to continue no longer. Simultaneously from the East, South and West, comes word that the tree revives, puts forth new foliage, and ripens its fruit under the influence of hot water and ashes. John Whittlesey, Esq., was the first in this vicinity to announce the discovery of fuugoidal disease lit the root of the tree. Mr. Thomas Median, of the Gardner'! Monthly, shoitly after announced his investigation in the same direction. The investigation of Prof. Kediz, of Lan sing State Agricultural College, on the yel low, lod him to the same conclusion. Wo are safe in saying that tho right direction has at last been reached in the investigation of this disease and its remedy. As yet tho subject has not been exhausted, nor has certainty been reached in the eradication or euro of tho evil. This, however, is cer tain that the application of hot water and ashes has saved many trees. Query Is this due to the action of heat alone ; and if so would not a peck of uuslacked lime about tho collar of tho tree, well covered up by slacking, produce heat enough to ac complish the sanio result ? Every tree in every orchard ought to have a pail of hot water poured around the collar of the tree every Spring. This would accomplish two rosults, namely: It would kill tho jeach borer or grub, and arrest the yellow in its incipient stages. Either one of theso re sults would amply compensate the labor iuvolved." Swindling the Farmers. . Every spring brings forth a host of adver tisements to catch the eye of the farmer. They are very skilfully worded and sot forth enormous profits. Such an advertisement or circular I received the other day from some Western man (name forgotten), who claimed to have a very proliilo field-corn, three stalks would average eleven sound ears. An acre would yield two hundred and fifty bushels of good corn, but ho does not say two hundred and fifty bushels of shelled com. Sand ford advertised his little dusky white corn in the same way. A number of farmers in this neighborhood purchased it, and it proved to bo a misera ble failure ; yet Sandford found purchasers at seven dollars per bushel. Tho Norway oats was another swindlo, for which far mers paid extravagant price. It was noth ing more than the black Poland or Feather oats. And now we are to have a Late Hoso potato, for which we are asked to pay a large price, and it may prove to be nothing more than the Oarnett Chili, which is very similar to the Early Rose in shape and col or. Farmers should bo careful to purchaBO only from honest seedsmen, and give swin dlers and speculators a wide berth. How to Build Brick Chimney Tops. All the brickwork above the superstruc ture should be made with cement mortar, which will absorb much loss water than mor tar made of caustic lime aud sand. The bricks for a chimney top should be soaked in water for a fow minutos, so that they will not extract tho water from the lime. In order to have mortar become very hard, it must dry slowly. By laying up wot bricks, the mortar will set slowly, dry slowly, and eventually beoome almost as hard as tho bricks. Every brick chimney should be covered at the top with a copestono, with au archod top, or with bricks placed over the flues, like the rafters of a building, for the purpose of turning off the water, which would go down the inside, bo absorbed by the bricks, and iu some instances, soak through and wet the paper or kalsomluing on the inside. A chimney top laid up with good cement mortar, and covered with a copestono or chimney arch, will stand the iuiluences of tho weather for more than a hundred years without any repairs. In- dm trial Monthly. How to Select Flour. 1. Look at its color; if it is white, with a slightly yellowish or straw-colored tint, it is a good sign, 'if it is very whito, with a bluish cast, or with black spooks in It, tho flour is not good. 3. Examine its adhe siveness, wot and knoad a littlo of it be tween the Angel's ; if it works dry and elas tic it is good ; if it works soft aud sticky it is poor. Flour mado from spring wheat is likely to be sticky. 8. Throw a little lump or dry Hour against a dry, smooth, perpen dicular surface; if it adheres in a lump, tho flour has life in it; if it falls like powdor, it is bad. 4. Squeeze some of the flour in your band ; if it retains the shape given by tho pressure, that, too, is a good sign. Flour that will stand all Uieae tests it is . safo to buy. , These modus are given by ' old flour dealers. . ; tstew:.
